Nick, you are 100% right, experience is golden.  I meant free, as far as, no green out of Nates pocket.  But, a intern is a great idea.

Yeah Nate, finish it off already  :p  Continue the blasphemy of machines building machines LOL.

OH I totally know what you meant.... I was just giving him ideas on ways to approach it and the way a intern should approach it. ;)

I want to see him get someone in there to give him a hand ASAP so I can get my hands on one of these blocks

I have been brainstorming for over a year on improvements and I have come up with some solid designs.  I can't wait to implement them.

You've gotta get someone to build a design for this and sell is on the market.

I've been thinking of using a TEC cooler to chill water after the rad into the waterblock. The inlet would be wrapped to avoid condensation.

Tons of ideas and You've got the tools to do it. Im jealous :P

If you are getting your water temps so low that condensation is forming then you would have to insulate every part of your water loop to prevent condensation. The temp difference from the water leaving the last heated component (CPU or GPU) and leaving the last cooling component will at MOST be 2C.

Pretty much what I was trying to say was the temp difference between the hottest part of your water loop and the coldest part of your water loop will only be at most 2C.

Wouldn't condensation happen even if the temperate is 1 degree less than the ambient air?

I can't recall where I heard that "If it's lower than the ambient, it'll create condensation".

If the humidity is at 100% in your room then yes, condensation starts forming at 0.5C lower than ambient.

I will try and find a good humidity/condensation chart for you.

Still have to finish the machine to build that.  The tolerances I want on this block only my new machine will likely do it.  Not that my current one wont, but I need an excuse to finish it.

no such thing as an old thread.  I am actually pretty close to finishing the new CNC build that was designed to build this block.  I have been building that CNC for over 2 years now, and i am at the point where it is actually moving.

Still even a year later from me finding this thread I still can't wait to see you get this done and see how it performs.

I noticed from the first page where you did the comparison between the two blocks that the vreg temps on your block are significantly lower than the vregs with the supreme hf.  Does your block cover those?  or was it simply because the system had time to cool down?

Nice.

We want pics of the new CNC, righht guys?

And Nate, any clue on our price yet or a high baller guess?

Sorry Nate, I cant help myself;

"Dose it come with Black Chrome,( aka "silver" ) option?" Unless the fin spacing is too close?

But, rereading your thread Nate, what about the cpu socket area on the RIVE x79? Of couse going water on the mosfet/sb as well:

My block had a fan blowing, vs traditional water blocks do not.

Once my machine is done, I can devote some time to re-designing the block.  There is a huge difference between the machine I currently use, vs this new one I designed.  The block also will get a complete re-design, but still keep in the same internal design.

Very interested in seeing this done, I would love to see if compared to my HD or some of the other current top contenders.  Say you are 1-5c warmer, that's still fine as the fan will offer protection if you have a failure, and you can't beat that.

Re:Finally! Air Cooled CPU Waterblock! 2013/05/20 10:38:21 (permalink)
Thats the intent ;)

To give you an idea of the accuracy of the new machine, I can zero out my machine, and put in a dial indicator, and give the command to move 0.0005" in any direction, and it will do that.  Then I can give the command to go back to zero... and it goes right back to zero.  that is zero backlash (backlash is the slop in a screw - like a benchtop vise - where when you change directions from loose to tight and vise versa)  Also without even tramming the machine, it is naturally 0.005 off of tram from front to rear (Y).

Re:Finally! Air Cooled CPU Waterblock! 2013/05/22 20:33:32 (permalink)
You inspired me to think of and come up with a similar design, although I dont know how plausible and practical it would be.

You know how air cooled CPU coolers have copper heat tubes that come from the copper block that sits on top of the CPU and takes them up to aluminum or copper fins? Like this one here: http://www.newegg.ca/Prod...x?Item=N82E16835233081

What if you were to take those same heat pipes and put them into the waterblock so the heat pipes are in the direct path of the water and have them come up through the top of the water block. You would braze/solder them on the roof of the block so they wouldnt impede water flow at all and the heat pipes can then come straight through the top to the cooling fins. Then you could add a 80mm, or 90m or 120mm fan on one side, or both sides to increase head dissipation. Sure the block would be big, slightly bigger than your average air cooled CPU cooler, but the amount of heat dissipation via air and water will truly be unmatched.

Thats just something that I was thinking about since last year when I first read this thread.
