I would focus less on the placement number (as untold tens or hundreds are not even in the self-reported spreadsheet) and would focus on what was the last time somebody in that particular queue received a "invite to buy" email. The placement number will ebb and flow, but the progression in the date and time of registration will continue apace.

Yeah, it can feel a bit discouraging to seem like you are going “backwards”. I started at position 45 and dropped to 72, but on the flip side I’ve gone from 45 others in front of me to just 3! There may be way more than that in front of me, but from a relative standpoint I’m way closer to getting a notification than I was when I was in position 45. Who knows, maybe a number of those that received emails today will pass on the 3090 and those will become available tomorrow. It’s not like they are super affordable compared to the 3080’s! In my opinion, 20GB is super unnecessary at the moment and won't have any significant impact on performance. I would definitely be upgrading again to a future generation long before it would ever matter.
Not to mention it is almost certainly going to be TI pricing.

Agreed. On balance, I think we gamers wants speed (frames) and will pay a reasonable premium for them (jumping up to the 3090 prices for ~15% isn't "reasonable" in my book). I think the threat from AMD's GPUs is overstated.
