nomoss Interesting article on the GPU shortage: https://www.pcworld.com/article/3612693/a-perfect-storm-why-graphics-cards-cost-so-much-now.html
The key takeaway for me was the idea of using a cloud gaming service in place of a GPU while waiting for your queue notify. Testing it on my work computer (just Intel graphics) and it's not too bad. Definitely need to test it some more today instead of doing actual work.
Well, the key take away for me was the 50,000 GPUs YTD (when article was written) sold on the bay and stock-x (whatever that is). An average “profit” of (very modest) $300 per card equates to $15,000,000 US.
Now, I can’t fault people to try to make a quick buck, but let’s make no mistake, if folks are buying those up, which they clearly are, they’re the enablers in this equation.
How this all relates to the queue is simple. The queue gives you a choice of two things; do you want to join the enablers and pay a premium to get your card now, or do you have the luxury and patience to wait however many months to get a card at MSRP?
This enabler talk is bull we need to stop shaming the consumer. Scalping is a by product of a failure on the supplier not the consumer. Stopping scalping should not be put on the shoulders of people trying to buy cards it is entirely the fault of the supplier. If cards were available there would be no scalping. We are way past the point of trying to stop scalping. Get your cards any way you can you are not enabling scalping it is going to exist with or without you.

..... spoken like a true .... ummm, scalper? Lol. I'm not seriously accusing you of that, but I'm sure that's what scalpers want us to think. I fear miners wanting to mine are just looking at ROI, and the thought of playing games in the future on a card they were able to pay for with mining is very tantalizing. Also, a lot of what triggers/addicts gamers is tweaking settings, overclocking, temps, benchmarks, etc. Mining nicely ticks all those addictive boxes with its own metrics: hashrates, efficiency figures, VRAM temps, undervolting, rejected shares, daily and monthly profitability, etc. They are hooked, and are willing to pay much higher than normal, and it's easy to understand why. Overwhelming temptation. And for the miners that also buy and sell, it ties into the whole gambling motive a little too. We don't really have any clue what the crypto market is going to do in the future. Could be great. Could be a disaster. The whole thing is an incredibly appealing "game" for some.

DrLuigiPhdHow does the step up process work? Get put into another queue and wait forever? Does it just take MSRP difference? https://www.evga.com/support/stepup/Yes, there is a separate queue. You have to pay difference between MSRPs + sales tax for full amount + shipping. And you have ship your current card back at your expenses.

MSRP difference + shipping. Step up queue is lower in priority than the notify queue from what I can gather.

You are assuming that the supplier has the ability to produce a greater supply of what people are scalping. The fact that a venue owner only has so many front row seats at a concert isn't a "failure" on their part. The failure is the system that enables scalping, and yes, that includes the consumer. It also includes the scalper, middlemen like Stubhub, and DC politicians who sure do like getting those court side seats for the NCAA playoffs. Look, if people were not paying scalpers, they would not exist. I don't agree with your last sentence. You are putting the cart before the horse. The consumers are holding the money. They have the power, not scalpers.

As I said before blame the supply not the demand. It really doesn't matter what the motive is for people buying cards. It's like cable tv back in the day. It became too expensive so piracy became huge then Netflix came out and made things affordable and easy for consumers so piracy went down . Now there are too many streaming services all starting to charge too much so piracy is on the rise again . Piracy and scalping is a symptom of the supplier not being able to meet the demands of the consumer.
