Prob 4.5ghz+ and custom water cooling. The OC socket basically lets the mobo regulate the voltage more IIRC to get a more stable overclock. There's much less vdroop etc.

I'm on custom water @ 4.5Ghz no problems with great temps.  Not sure why you would need all that when these sockets are already capable unless EVGA doesn't supply all the X99 MBs the same socket which I believe they do.

I read somewhere that Skylake Extreme will maybe work on board with OC Socket.
I mean if Skylake E work with them than he will work with all 2011-3 boards... But I doubt in that.
Intel will want more money and who know how much will cost processors...
I saw one Broadwell model with 4 cores cost over 600$ for laptops.

Because of that I insist to buy everything for X99.
Skylake can't be over 10% stronger... Skylake mainstream is even less than Haswell.
And if Intel decide to go only with 40 lanes, only CPU and good motherboard will cost 1100$.
Now some X99 combination is possible to find for 650-660$ whole platform, memory, Micro 2, and i7-5820K.

I'm starting to believe that Intel CPU's just need more PCIe lanes. Time to make the jump to 48 or 56 lanes. :)

How much fan headers are PWM-capable?

Ok, for my review of the board I picked up a cheap oscilloscope to test the fan headers and I can now confirm that all 5 fan headers on the X99 Micro2 are PWM capable. The CPU2_FAN header is independently controllable from CPU_FAN as well.

My build is up and running. Easy-peasy. My only problem posting was noobishness with these here new-fangled memory slots; who knew that these would actually self-lock just by pressing straight down on the stick? (Answer: anyone who read the manual properly before installing.)

Setting up the SM951 for booting was cake, btw. CAKE. Work in progress pic attached.

DEAR EVGA: Even though I'm not concerned in the least about internal chassis appearance items, your X99 Micro 2 I/O cover IS handsome and I did install it. However, it DOES contact with the video PCB, and while I appreciate the protective (and presumably insulative?) film you applied to the end of it, I'm not keeping decorative items that interfere with functional components. Clearances in MATX are tough enough as it is. I will regrettable be binning this otherwise sectsy piece of kit. Alas.

I found this out the hard way as well. I prefer to keep a backplate on my top card and this protective cover would prevent the GPU from fitting altogether. I prefer the backplate over the cover in this case.

I've considered cutting off the bottom part but ultimately decided against it. Otherwise I can't complain about this board!

Motherboard could look nice and without shield over back ports.
Important is look of PCB, colors, layout, quality of parts, etc...

**** only one PWM header? This can't be true. Please.

EVGA Details page state "Fan Headers – 5 (2 PWM, 3 DC)" So that would be 2 PWM header and not 1.

More SATA ports too.

More SATA ports, great! Does that mean we can use SATA EXPRESS? Nope... :'(
**EDIT: Reason behind the lack of of SATA Express is to provide more complete RAID options across all ports. Mostly for the small form factors.

Audio upgrade is a nice touch over the old Realtek chipset.
Other component upgrades are nice too!

Supports up to 64GB of DDR4 with OC support up to 3Ghz! What about 128GB (4x 32 GB)?

What about 8-pin EPS power connectors and 6-pin PCIe power input? Is this something to consider in the future?

I tested with an oscilloscope and all 5 headers on the X99 Micro2 are PWM capable. The Micro1 had some errors in the manual about the fan headers so that's why I wasn't confident on the Micro2 at first.

Hey guys, does anyone know the fan/voltage/SuperIO controller on the Micro2? I'm on the fence between going microATX or keeping my ATX X99 build, and the deciding factor right now is if it's compatible with Speedfan or not.

It should be something like Nuvoton NCT6791D or ITE IT8783F or something similar.

Thanks!

Nice pictures, yes I notice immediately that board is very high quality but EVGA always make such boards.
They have some specific seal as no one else.

Re: EVGA X99 Micro2! 2015/08/22 22:50:40 (permalink)
Hi I've just purchased this board with a 5820K processor.
I'm having enormous difficulty in getting my fans to work with PWM settings, the system seems to be running them at full speed no matter what SMART settings I use in the BIOS.
I have 5 Corsair PWM fans connected using a PWM spiltter to the CPU2_FAN header.
This is set to SMART, FAN control by CPU Temperature. CPU temp reports as 44c.
The CPU1_FAN header does not have any connections, but I also set this to SMART and lowered speeds to 20% across the temp range.
Seems the fans are all spinning at max (1366prm for these fan models).
Machine is far too noisy, can anyone assist in getting my set up done correctly for these?
Many thanks.

@EVGA_JacobF:

Hi Jacob. I've had delivery of my EVGA X99 Micro2. As I am still waiting on some watercooling fittings to turn up I have not had much opportunity to test the motherboard and form extensive opinions. But my hopes are positive / high and I am looking forward to seeing what it can do.

However, I already have one area of constructive criticism that I think others have been frustrated by too. The motherboard package includes a really neat looking I/O case-side metal fitting that you screw down onto two of the motherboard standoffs. The problem is that with this installed the side of the metal I/O surround intersects with where my GPU backplate needs to go with the GPU pushed into the first PCIe x16 slot. It is a tiny detail, but really annoying. I am not going without the GPU backplate so currently the metal I/O surround is sitting unused. (There is no way to fettle it to fit. I have tried). Basically the metal I/O surround needs a redesign.

Can your engineers do anything to improve this part so that it fits with GPU backplates given the space constraints with the I/O ports? Are your product managers able or willing to modify new production to include a version 2 of the I/O surround? Or is it too late from a manufacturing / SKU point of view. Are you able to create a version 2 I/O surround and either send it out to registered owners or sell it to them from your website as an update / spare part?

It is annoying me as one of the reasons for choosing this board was the clean look and that is partially impacted by this part incompatibility.

Thanks, Simon.

On my ASUS board fan control work perfectly, you only need to choose type of fan and everything is easy.
But controlling fan with motherboard BIOS and software is nothing compared with one normal fan controller for 4-6 fans with RPM reading. That's best option, much better than in BIOS or software. If I cross on EKWB Predator I will control fans with normal controller. It's much easier and faster.

With EVGA X99 Micro 2 they made mistake in design...On my board is very close to graphic card with backplate but fit completely normal. Only I don't have screw on that place. Shield is from very thick and strong aluminum connected with VRM heatsink and if you want to install water block for VRM you stay without shield for I/O ports, that's one part.

Sure, that is what I have done Vlada: just gone without the shield for the I/O ports. It is just that I was expecting to have a very clean stealth look, and it has not worked out that way. It is not a deal breaker, but it is a disappointment.

On EVGA X99 Classified people could keep shield if they replace VRM heatsink with water block.
Important is nice cables management etc, clean look, etc... shield or not shield for me is less important.

Ok. Well I am using EK's Titan X waterblock and backplate. I imagine people using the EVGA Hydro waterblock and backplate will be facing the same component clash as me.

Totally agree with you that cable management, pipe routing and all else is going to be more important. But when you are 95% towards what you are trying to achieve, it is always nice to close the gap to 100% as much as you can.

Are they Corsair SP120's? They are known to have issues when 5 or more are run off the same fan header.

Do they work correctly with only 3 or 4 hooked up to the splitter?

I'm having enormous difficulty in getting my fans to work with PWM settings, the system seems to be running them at full speed no matter what SMART settings I use in the BIOS.
I have 5 Corsair PWM fans connected using a PWM spiltter to the CPU2_FAN header.
This is set to SMART, FAN control by CPU Temperature. CPU temp reports as 44c.
The CPU1_FAN header does not have any connections, but I also set this to SMART and lowered speeds to 20% across the temp range.
Seems the fans are all spinning at max (1366prm for these fan models).

Are they Corsair SP120's? They are known to have issues when 5 or more are run off the same fan header.

Do they work correctly with only 3 or 4 hooked up to the splitter?

Hi - yes they are "Corsair SP120 PWM Low Noise High Pressure Fan 4 pin". They worked absolutely fine on my old ASUS P67 Board on PWM, same 5 fan splitter configuration.
Is this a problem specific to EVGA fan headers?

Careful when plugging in that many fans on one fan header.  In most CPU fan headers (including X99), the standard is only 1 AMPs.  Going over will only insure catastrophic failure.

Is the chipset and Vregs the same as the original Micro?

The problem is with the fans, not the board. The SP120s have poor PWM implementation and are known to have issues when used with a PWM splitter off a motherboard header. 5-6 SP120s is on the edge and some boards may handle that just fine while others don't.

I tried some different 3 way PWM splitters, 3 fans on 1st connected to CPU1, 2 fans on the 2nd connected to CPU2 header, both set to SMART and CPU2 set to CPU Temp.
Still all fans running at max speed.
Getting a little annoyed at this. 1 fan connected to CPU1 worked fine on PWM settings.
Next step is to try 2x 2 way splitters on these headers.....

My guess is its a BIOS issue as you guys will have to wait for an update to address this issue since the board is new.
