Im using the P55 SLI board. Is the OC'ing process essentially the same? For some reason, I am unable to make any changes to the CPU frequency and Multiplier settings. Is there something I need to do to fix this problem? Im new to overclocking, so any help on overclocking with my P55 SLI board would be much appreciated!

To change the multiplier, use "-" and "+" buttons on your keyboard. To change the frequency, simply type the desired number.

First of all - hello everyone! Just days ago I became a proud owner of a P55 Classified 200. Before I had a Gigabyte P55A-UD3R and started to OC on that board and I'm still a noob at this, so I came here to ask for help. On the Gigabyte I reached about 3,7 GHz stable on my i7 860 with max temp. of 80C(176F) but with room temp. of about 30C(86F) ! Now on the EVGA I'm on 3,487GHz reaching the same temperatures with 23C(73,4F) ambient, so a significant decrease of room temp than before!!! When I try increasing the BLCK to reach 3,8GHz I can't even boot into W7. My cooler is the Zalman CNPS10X Quiet, running at max RPMS' with it's adapter which is about 1300/1400RPM. RAM : 4GB G.Skill F3-16000CL9-2GBRH 2000MHz My case is a Coolermaster 690 II Advanced with a 140mm front intake fan, a 120mm on the back and another 140mm on top, both of them pushing air outside the case, I also think I did a pretty good cabling job so air circulation should be adequate. I thought that I could hit 4GHz on air since I moved to a monster mobo like this and with the ambient temps going down significantly, but it's like even worse than before. Any help? Here are some screenies

You must be doing something wrong i think, myself i come from a Gigabyte P55A-UD3 aswell to the p55 FTW and i got a much more stable overclock here with this mobo. at the gigabyte i had coil whine once i hitted 3.7ghz and above it was unstable as hell.

@xanubis yeah that's what I keep telling myself, I mean it's obvious that I'm doing something wrong but dunno what... When I raise the blck by a little to get around 3,7/3,8GHz (also I lower the frequency divider to 2:10 from 2:12 because I would go way over my 2000MHz then) I get this BSOD on W7 boot anyone knows what it is related to?

Jacob Can you please explain your steps here with more detail. See my questions below. 3. Next we will go under "Memory Configure" and adjust my memory to it's specifications. In my case, I am running 1600MHz memory so I will make the following adjustments: * Memory Frequency to 1067MHz (AKA 2:8). * Memory timings adjusted properly per memory specifications. * This will give me 1600MHz memory. (200x8) First, since you said you have DDR3 1600 memory, I assume you you're saying the effective memory clock is 1600MHz? Therefore, given the memory multiplier for DDR3 memory: 8, the real memory clock setting is limited to run reliably at 200MHz, right? What does the Memory DRAM Frequency in the BIOS app represent: real, effective or something in between as far as memory clock rate? In your example, is Front-side Bus, FSB, Basic Clock, BCLK, and Bus Speed considered to be one and the same in concept? If not, please explain. The ratio you sited above, 2:8, is it the DRAM:FSB ratio (commonly called the Memory Divider Ratio, the inverse of the usually displayed FSB:DRAM ratio), the FSB:DRAM ratio or something else? Where did you get it? And how did you use it to get to 1067MHz? Is 1067MHz a real, effective or somewhere in between memory clock rate? When you say, "This will give me 1600MHz memory. (200X8)," where did you get 200 and 8? I assumed they were, respectively, your new Bus Speed and DDR3 memory multiplier to yield an effective memory clock of 1600MHz. Please, no replies from those who do not absolutely understand this stuff. It's confusing enough without the guess work. Many thanks in advance BoiseBaked

@ MP_no_7 I thing your VTT is to high... Poor CPU... The other thing is that you shouldn't have so many settings on "auto" thats kind of a no-no for OC....

1.3 VTT is ok - no problem.. maybe 1.25V also works - Intel allows it to 1.4V. But.. PWM VTT must be higher for oc. Also PWM PCI.. MCH Strap MUST be setted to the RAM value QPI .. try the lowest MHz. "Auto" is never good for oc.

Hello, This is my first post on this forum. I have a dual channel set of Kingston HyperX 1333 4GB running on my EVGA P55 FTW mobo. When running with the A27 BIOS the XMP profile works fine. Machine boots up and the memory profile is automatically loaded by the memory. The memory performs at the higher setting. When running with the A59 or A70 BIOS. The machine will not boot. Has anyone had better results with XMP memory of the EVGA BIOS A70? Thanks. Ray

don't use XMP profiles... . they are useless.. set the timings / clock to the specs of your ram and everthing is fine

Wow overclocking the P55 FTW really is easy. Got my i5 760 to 4.2 GHz in a few minutes (took 2 to 3 tries). This was only for a Vantage run but it turned out to be stable too, passed 20 passes of IBT on maximum.

Thanks for the link dozer3000, I didn't know what it was either. I wouldn't bother adjusting it really. As for CPU multiplier, it's just the multiplier applied to the base clock. 20 is the max on your CPU.

Hmm. I attempted to run this exact setup on my p55 ftw with 875k but the temp goes over 94 withing 30 seconds with prime 95 and BSOD/ Reboots. At idle it is at 41 which seems fairly consistent with what other are experiencing. I have a corsair with h50 with OCZ free TIM.. Perhaps I should reseat the cooler? I have it set up an intake and running a cool master HAF 932 so cooling should nOT be an issue. on a side note.. the exact same setup in my ESXI whitebox, will hit 88c after 10 minutes running prime95

You shouldn't just go and use anyone's BIOS template especially if it's a different CPU. Voltage requirements vary per batch. You should use a starting point for voltages. 1.30 VCore and 1.30 VTT are great starting points. If those temperatures are in Celsius, then your cooler and thermal paste must be mounted horribly. Remove the cooler, remove all of the old thermal paste with high percentage alcohol or ArctiClean. Make the CPU and cooler look brand new. Then apply a size of TIM onto the center of the CPU the size of a rice grain, and then mount the cooler. Make sure the cooler is getting good contact with the CPU. The software you're using could have a messed up sensor as well. What are you using to monitor temperatures? I prefer RealTemp and the P55 FTW also has its own CPU temperature display which is good.

I used that starting point for voltages but they are too "hot" for this setup for some reason. Are they not the same chip except the 875k is unlocked? These Temperatures are in Celcius and i know they are extremely high. I will take another crack at thiis tonight but seeing as i put two thin lines of ocz freeze and checked the coverage before screwing it down i'm not sure how it could be that bad :) I tightend the screws slowly in an x pattern until they were snug at about the same time.. Perhaps in my excitement i went to quickly. The other setup i have is pushing 90C with the h70 with one cooling fan setup as intake but it does take alot longer to get to those temps.. I thought the h50/h70 were supposed to be exceptional for cooling compared to air cooling.

The H50 and H70 are only on par with air coolers. A typical 120mm water cooling radiator like the H50 is good for dissipating around 200W of heat, which is what most ~4 GHz i7 quad cores will be giving off depending on voltages. The H70 is a bit thicker and is a few degrees ahead of most air coolers, but not by much. For 4 GHz you'll definitely want more than just the standard, piece of crap fan included with the Corsair H50. Since it has a fin density of 20 FPI you'll want something with good pressure such as push/pull Scythe GentleTyphoon AP-15 if you don't want to go deaf. Intake or exhaust... it won't make much of a difference. A few degrees. Regarding thermal paste, I'm sure you know it's just used to fill the air gap between the CPU and heat sink since air can't transfer heat well. So you want the thermal paste to form a thin layer over the CPU. The best application method for flat surfaces is to apply a small drop of paste on the center of the CPU (about the size of the rice grain) and then mount the heat sink directly on top of that. Spreading it yourself is not recommended since you'll create air pockets which will kill heat transfer.

Thanks for the input.. I do know about putting too much paste on chip.. Seen too many newbs trying to resurect dead xbox 360s that i fixed up. I will wipe the paste clean and start over. I will also look into getting new fans as well.. From what i read prior to going with the h50 was that is dropped the core temp by 5 degree Celsius which to me is quite large..

I put a small dab in the middle and have dropped 13c running prime95. at 100% on stock bios settings.. :) at idle is about the same using core temp. but 13c less at 100% load. Guess i am the newb :)

So with my current build, is 3.2-3.6 with my air cooling within reason? And how do I actually go about doing it? Any help would be appreciated.
