ok so i did just that and i used prime95 to test and i let it go for 1 hour 20 min and there were no errors and will stress test it tonite untill tomorrow to see if it holds up which it should. i set the cpu frequency to 180 and used all of the same steps as the guide and my temp at idel is 31c

Hello.
I have little problems to OC my i7 860 on p55ftw.
First I think it will be impossible to reach 4Ghz.

And I have something strange: when I try to OC above 150Mhz  in bios I cannont boot, I have E8 error, so I boot with 150Mhz and I OC with Eleet on windows. When I find something stable I try it in the bios...and then error E8, and I have to CCMOS.
Someone has already seen that?

edit: I think I found something interesting.
I kept a stable setup recorded in a profile in the bios. It is my base when I have to CCMOS.
MCH strap was in automatic mode. When I fix it to 1867, 1600 or 1333 Mhz, I  can't boot I have the E8 error.
i tried to put it in "DRAM ratio" and it seems to work.
I forgot to say that I set my ram frequency very low, to be sure that will not interfere with the CPU oc (and high latencies too)

Re:EVGA P55 Overclocking Guide 2011/03/22 11:15:40 (permalink)
I have done the suggested overclock. Running Prime95 now, so far so good. Except i think i have a bad chip. Bad as in I have 1.317v and i only get 4Ghz instead of 4.2. I myself only wanted 4Ghz regardless, but if i were to overclock to get myself the 4.2, base speeds would be a bit more than suggested.

Multiplier is at 20x as well instead of the 21x. After bumping all the specs, the bios adjusts automatically. So i could see how much the increase/decrease would give me before i S/E.

At 21x, my clock would be at 4.4Ghz. Even though the mobo could support it cause watercooled, I myself dont feel comfortable running that fast at the same clocks as suggested on OP.

Computer Specs:

P55 FTW mobo
i7 860
4GB Corsair Dominator Ram 1600MHz
480 ftw gpu
1000W corsair psu

Any insight would be appreciated. Will post results after im done testing ^_^

Maybe someone can help me figure out why my WEI is so low where memory is concerned. I have adjusted my settings based on this guide. In looking for a safe air-cooled overclock, here are my settings.

bclock at 160.10 x 24.0
cpu is i5 650 @ 3.2 running at 3842.43
cpu voltage at 1.3
vtt voltage at 1.4
PCIE freq at 104
QPI freq at 4.270
mem freq at 1067 (2:8)
temps hover in the low 40's idle and upper 60's at peak load
intelburntest runs successful for five cycles under max load

All appears to be stable at this point, OEM air cooled. My WEI score doesn't appear to be right though.
Processor 7.2
Memory 5.9
Graphics 7.6 EVGA 560TI
Hard Disk 5.9

The disk I understand, SSD is on the way. The memory seems low to me. I'm running 4GB 2x2GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 2000 CL9

Are my settings wrong on the memory?

Wow, I made the cpu changes and achieved 4.2ghz easily. However, I am not sure what to do with memory. The example includes 1600MHz.

My ram specs are;
800 MHz (2.8) @ 11 11 11 29
4GB with 2 sticks

Can someone give me some advice on setting up the memory?

Thanks,

Brad

Manually enter whatever your memory timings are and your voltge.Example my corsair specs are 9-9-9-24 timings at 1.65 volts. So on the memory page change from auto and manually enter your timings specified for your ram.Change the dimm voltage from auto to whatever your specs are, probably 1.65v but don't go over 1.65 volts on your board. To figure out your ram speed it will be your bclk x what your memory ratio is.Example bclk=200 and ratio is set to 2:8 so 200 x 8 = 1600 mhz. 2:10 ratio would be 2000 mhz. My memory is only rated at 1600 mhz so i would not be able to use the 2:10 ratio at a 200 bclk.

if you could post your bios settings would be helpful to others,To achieve my oc i followed miahallens 3 step guide and it worked great, just gotta be patient and follow the steps. That way it isolates whatever the problem is and you can figure it out from there instead of hit and miss messing around with voltages.I also found that when testing my new overclocks that i turn off aero theme and swith to basic, turn off any screensavers and change power scheme so display and pc never go to sleep mode.Ive had times when aero has changed the desktop was just enough to make my prime crash.

I plan on overclocking my system soon but I'm very paranoid, I don't want to run into BIOS and set various voltages and settings without really understanding the basics behind it all.

I was wondering if anyone could give me a quick run down on things, or maybe link me to a post that can help me out.

Not sure if this will help out but my specs are as follows;

Case: HAF X
Motherboard: EVGA P55 FTW
CPU: Intel i7 860
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper N520
GPU: EVGA GTX 260
RAM: 4GB x 2 Corsair XMS3 - 1600MHz
2GB x 1 Crucial (not sure about the speed, sorry).
Powersupply: Corsair 750W

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Re:EVGA P55 Overclocking Guide 2011/08/11 03:05:23 (permalink)
Recently I put all my HW in a new case.

I followed this guide to OC a little - the max I am interested is ca 3.6GHz for my i5 750 + p55 SLI and I have a weird issue...
All the setting are fine, but from my previous attempt, the bus speed is stuck at 143Mhz, I can change every single other setting in BIOS, but this one is stuck, the +/- keys don't work, I can not press enter.

Honestly, I am hoping that I don't have reset the BIOS and set everything again, but I guess I might have to?

IF I reset the setting, will I be able to load them from a saved profile?
Has EVGA released any BIOS updates, I never updated the BIOS since new...

Finally I am interested in keep all power savings features on and only a moderate overclock, would it make any significant difference performance wise to have say CPU at 19x 166 vs 20 x 157 - ie CPU has the same speed but everything else is either a bit faster or slower?

I am 100% stable with this overclock Except...
I just bought a USB 3.0 PCIe card and the card dose not work at this overclock.
I'm having to down-clock(still overclocked @ 3.5GHz.)

Any one know why im having to do this to make the USB 3.0 work?

I know I'm rather behind the times here, but anyone else find it ironic that an EVGA Product Manager has you disable features of the board that are supposed to make overclocking easier - things are used as marketing points for the boards?  Like VDroop control for example.

Your new to overclocking and you want to jump right up to 4GHz? My advice...take your time and learn what overclocking is all about. Not all chips overclock the same. Start with a modest overclock and see how that works. Test it...load it...what kind of temps are you getting...how stable is your computer? For me 3.8 was as high as I could go. I could run some benchmarks at 4.0, but my temps were just to high to be comfortable with. I really saw no benifit from running my i5 at 3.8 in the end, and found 3.2 to be the sweet spot for myself, as it allowed me to keep the i5's Turboboost enabled.

vDroop has nothing to do with making overclocking easier, its purpose is to control voltage spikes when loading or unloading the cpu. Below is an explaination I clipped from an Intel article explaing vDroop, and it seems that manufacturers and designers are given some latitude in dealing with how to implement vDroop.

hi  im use cool  water wc   p55 ftw

How are your "High" temps so low with that high of voltage?
What is the room air temperature?
Mine is overclocked to 4.2 @1.250 without VDrop and it gets to 70-80C.
Im using Koolance 370 block with 2 - 480 Rads.
