I tested each card individually and it appears that my 970's don't go above 3.5gb of Vram usage. Using EVGA's OC scanner tool. I first came across this article here It makes mention of some people who are affected. Both of mine appear to have the issue. Anyone else notice this?

I'm having the same issue on my single GTX 970 FTW card. I don't know if this is a driver issue or a hardware issue, but what I do know is that both NVIDIA or the various manufacturers of the cards need to speak up soon. If it is indeed a hardware issue, giving people the option to RMA before their warranty runs out on seem like the proper thing to do. I'm now very wary of my card and what I need to do, and on a $370 purchase, that's not a good place to be.

From searching around, I don't see any real evidence anywhere proving that a problem exists. If it really were a problem, you would see at least one of the many tech sites with an article written by a known and reputable author highlighting the problem using real measurable tests under controlled conditions. Instead, you only see the claims coming from unknown strangers and most of the evidence they provide is often easily proven wrong or easily later corrected user error.

The article is on DSO Gaming's website. I can't seem to link it on the forums.

Yes, I'm just imagining my card only using 3.5 gigabytes of vram after EXTENSIVE testing. Also, look a bit harder, more and more articles are popping up over the issue. Just because you may not have an issue doesn't mean many don't and I'm not sure why you are defending it regardless.

Until a reputable author is able to prove that there is an issue, I won't believe that there is an issue. Writing an article stating that some people seem to be having issues is not proof at all. Digging into the threads where people are claiming to have issues, there are quite a few blatantly misleading statements made, flawed testing methods using improper software, and people without the proper experience leading other people with improper experience off on a wild goose chase.

Again, great, you don't have an issue. Many people do, like myself. I know how to test my gpu, and I know it has an issue. The biggest problem I have in addressing it, however, is if its a hardware issue or a software issue. I honestly don't care what you believe or not, the fact of the matter is there is an issue, and until we hear official word from NVIDIA or the various third-parties on the cards, people have a very real right to be wary and concerned about an issue on a $370 dollar card.

Most OC scanner tools use up to 3gb of vram that I have read. What tool are you using to get to 3.5? Remember, OC scanner is synthetic. I am pretty sure 3096 is the high OC scanner setting for furry E, which is just below 3 GB and the most intensive test available through OC scanner.
What about with Firestrike Ultra? Most cards only use 3.2-3.4gb on FSU.
You could try the ultra texture pack for Shadows of Mordor, but I doubt it does much compared to the suggested amount of vram.

Actually, Shadow of Mordor is a great example. On a 980 GTX, the vram loads to 4gb before the loading is done. On my 970, it never goes above 3.6 or so usage. As a result, when using the ultra texture pack, it hitches like crazy. I've also tested many other games in real life environments, not just tools like OC scanner. I've not had a game use over 3.6 gigs normally, however, when it does, it immediately begins to hitch after the 3.6 threshold. I tested my old EVGA 670 4gb at those same places, and all the various games use the full 4gb of vram and doesn't hitch at all. There is an issue with the gtx 970, and I would have said its just a problem with my card if I hadn't seen tons and tons of other people say the same thing.

It is probably a driver issue or something. I highly doubt nvidia will say much unless they find a major issue they have to report. Many companies don't do releases when they find an issue like that. If it is driver, I bet it just miraculously becomes fixed in an update with a small blurb. If it is hardware, then maybe the daughter companies will release the fix and give an update.
Hopefully you get word either way. Have you made a post on NVIDIA forums to see if anyone addresses it?

I have, and the forum page is filling up fast with the same issue. That's what made me believe this isn't just an isolated case. The problem with this issue is that few games fill up the vram to such an extent, but with extensive testing, you notice its a big issue, and down the line, if this is a hardware issue, there is going to be a lot of upset people as vram requirements become more demanding. I hope its a driver issue, as you say, but its the not knowing that's frustrating. I'm tempting to RMA, but then I may just get the same card with the same issue. This is also why I posted here, to bring awareness to something that needs looking into.

I noticed this too. Any game I play the max amount of memory that gets used hovers around 3.5 and this is with the new SSC just released as well as my old SSC GTX 970.

The gtx 970's performance degrades significantly when more vram is used, whereas the gtx 980 remains consistent. Translate this to real world and you'll see major stuttering and low fps lag.
