Considering a bot to combat scalpers for a 3080 Ti. Just like the quote goes "If you can't beat them join them" But if I do consider a bot ill just snag one and only one.

I don't think it's changing any time soon, simply avoid buying from scalpers if your current gpu is still going strong, that's what many ppl do, refuse to buy cards 2x or 3x over msrp.

Still struggling with my old 970 :D

It's really hard. This is an Economics 101 problem. We have scalping because demand is much higher than supply and "official" suppliers can't increase the price. Therefore, we have scalpers. The real problem is that scalpers could be "hoarding" supply and creating "artificial" shortages. They could be acting as a descentralized-monopoly in distribution of sorts. A way to help is to ensure that no actor can "hoard" product. Many ways to try this and we're seeing some already (one video card per household for example).

The best way to combat scalpers is for sure not to buy from them. I know that its hard and tempting but it's literally the only thing we as consumers can do imho.

Exactly what I came to say. If no one bought from scalpers, they wouldn't have more money to keep scalping. We can blame scalpers all we want, but no one seems to be mad at the people who pay 2-3x MSRP.

As a consumer, yes, that's the only real way to combat the scalpers: DON'T BUY FROM THEM. That sustains their whole scummy business model.

The real fight against scalpers needs to be fought at the corporate/business level, as novablinkicelance mentioned. There needs to be strict enforcement of bot purchases, bulk purchases to resellers/limits for card sales to 1 per customer... however most companies don't seem to care about your average consumer having card availability as long as they're selling their stock and making money. At least EVGA seems to be doing a little bit more than the rest.

Best way to combat scalping is not buying products at scalping prices.

yeah, I agree, besides the "one video card per household" I think its better for Nvidia to let all GPU manufacturers send an email to customers to choose what brand GPU, and series they want. For example, I want an EVGA 3080 Ti, so before it launches globally which will land in the hands of scalpers they can simply send me an email to purchase one allowing me to choose and buy and after purchasing it. I'm locked out of purchasing any other GPU card. They can do this via an API that lets all retailers know that my home address and debit card are locked out of purchasing a video card anywhere.

So you won't have a GPU up to a year after release, are you okay with that? Look at the PS5 situation.

Well it's hardly been a year for PS5's, but I get your point.

I mean if you can stomach the prices scalpers are asking, go for it.  I know it doesn't do anything to dissuade them, but if you need, or want a GPU that badly than I'm happy for you to get one whichever way you do.  I would think that a large majority of people aren't willing to hand over more than twice the amount of money though, even if it means no GPU.

Unpopular opinion: Join them. Most likely a real gamer isn't going to buy your 3080, a miner is. So get a card, scalp it so the miner pays way more, and then take your $1000 profit and use it to build an even better PC in 6 months if/when this all calms down.

    Yup.  You'll live.
Everyone needs to just quit being obsessed with something that they don't need.  Video cards are being manufactured at a greater rate than ever before, but they are still virtually non-existent.  Everyone just needs to cool their jets and reevaluate what matters.

Re: Best way to combat scalping? 2021/05/27 21:31:03 (permalink)
I feel like there are at least two perspectives that need to be considered while analyzing this question.
What can retailers do to ensure their products are reaching legitimate end user customers?
-This question is hard both from a logistic and ethical standpoint. Since retailer’s primary purpose is to sell as many products regardless of the end user, the only business incentive to limit scalpers access is brand loyalty. Companies that place a high value on brand loyalty will naturally take steps to limit access, while companies that prioritize immediate profits will take not such actions.  There are complex theories as to which methods are most effective… but that should probably be a different thread.
What can consumers do to limit the effect of scalpers in a supply constrained market?
-Scalpers ability to dominate the market is based purely on what desperate people are willing to pay. Extreme margins exacerbate the issue, especially when the sale one item at 3x price enables the exponential growth in available cash flow. Collective refusal to purchase goods at high margins is unfortunately the only natural means of decreasing this cycle.

Money wins out over all. Either get lucky or wait it out.  I wouldn't use a bot cause you're just opening yourself up to malwares and spyware.  You'll end up losing more over all if you get hacked.
