Re: 2020 Time Zone Challenge 2020/12/08 18:50:39 (permalink)
I signed up today but didn't put much thought into my PPD and this is my first time so all new to me.  Is there a way to modify since I read above that teams will be made on my estimate?  I only put 1M and I think I will be getting 3M/day if all goes well.  Also if I get back a machine tomorrow I loaned to a friend then I will be able to put my 1080 Ti to use as well and get another 1M/day.  I just got a 2080 and so not exactly sure how stable or much it will do but according the estimates I should get the 3M/day.

I also will find something to donate, either Amazon gift card(s) or something else. Since this is all new to me I don't know how many gifts are given or how they are distributed so is it better to give, say $25 gift card or 5 x $5 gift cards?

Probably a single $25 gift card would be better unless you do $5 from Peet's or Starbucks. In the past the contestants determine what prizes they like on the list, for example 1)gtx 1050  2) $25 Amazon GC   3) $20 Newegg GC, Then when the drawing happens, if your name comes up first you get the 1050 and the next winner gets his highest rated prize that is still available. Hope this helps. Thanks for signing up.

Where/how do I update my PPD?  I didn't think I was going to get my second rig up and running because the part said "estimated delivery was dec 20th."  But it came in today, and it's up and running make my PPD jump from 650k to 1.7 - 1.95 million roughly.

Yeah, I guess that's pretty much my issue as well. My 2060s fans are constantly going nuts when folding, unpredictably, and I can't really use the overclocking tools to adjust them either. I just can't do it to everyone over the holidays, gathering for meals, etc to have that going on all the time.

I could fold with just my old 970 / 3570k and 950 / 3570k and Ryzen 3700 (can't fold on 960 because Linux FAH makes the machine unusable when the GPU is folding). I'd hate to let people down though due to extenuating circumstances..

Plus, even when I did have all my rigs going, my best was ~75M/month (around 2.x PPD) and there are guys here with rigs doing easily 5x that.

I've been the recipient of numerous prizes over the years when I wasn't in a great place financially. Thanks again to all the prize donors of the past, present, and future. Things are much better for me now and I'm super happy to contribute a prize. I'm planning on giving a $50 gift card to Amazon. I'd love to open it up to Worldwide but don't know how tricky it might be to make that happen (without paying CC fees for foreign currency, etc). If anybody (kckinwa?) has any tips or hints, let me know.

If it's an E-card, I think you could just give the recipient the code. .....I think, and yes it hurts at times.

If you can join us, we would gladly enjoy your efforts. All folding adds up together. Hey, I want to fold like the top dogs also, but my wallet won't let me. There is no shame in lower folding numbers, it's about completing the WU's. There is no pressure to join as well, just a fun contest so Central the best Team can win.

I Sent the manager an e-mail. Last I got was they wanted to RMA my PSU... every time I try to update, nothing!

I also got a 2060 Super, and a screw was missing and wedged in the backplate.. trying to get that resolved to but I fold with 2 1080 TI's.

Its been fine, past few days.. but it popped and than rebooted telling me to check PCI-E Cables. They were all secured.

Awesome! Was a little sad last year when we didn't have it.

Just built a new rig, except the GPU is not brand new. I didn't have it in the 2018 TZC, and I don't really fold except for the TZC, so it should be a nice improvement over my old card.

I estimated 2 million / day in sign up; we'll see how it pans out. May fire up my GTX 680 just for the heck of it.

And all those 3000 GPUs too... I know a great many people haven't been able to get one, but there's a lot of them in the wild now too. I hope Folding@home has enough work units for us

Once upon a time in a TZC not so long ago we pooled our resources to give away 5 or so brand new 1000 GPUs to our folders and EVGA was nice enough to set a few aside for us at a time when supply was similarly very limited.

Re: 2020 Time Zone Challenge 2020/12/10 10:52:33 (permalink)
That was indeed a great one!

As the Stat's Wrangler, I want to remind everyone that if you have signed up but have NOT folded yet so your name shows up on the Stanford folding lists, you need to please do so ASAP.  Also, PLEASE verify that the name you use for folding shows up EXACTLY as you use it for folding.  (PM troy8d if you need to have your entry adjusted)  I will start compiling the list of contestants and verifying the entries soon-ish and it just makes life MUCH easier if I don't have to manually hunt for variations/spend time trying to add a name that's not coming in through the stats.

PLEASE pay attention to the rules for cut-off on signups! Do NOT assume that I will be able to add a huge pile of late entries and just put off signing up until then.  Things have changed a lot since previous contests and while I DO work from home, that actually means I don't have the same amount of 'free' time to devote to the manual adjustments needed to add people into the system after the fact.

If you are reaching out to other folders and recruiting for the contest, please use this last week and PUSH!  I want to see numbers!!I no longer know what the theoretical limits on my stats system are anymore and really want to push up against that wall!  If I'm forced to re-design the system mid contest because too many people signed up? That's IDEAL!! I LOVE when you all break my toys on me!  *laughs*

A special thanks to notfordman for reaching out to me to send a 1tb drive to replace the failing boot drive on the stats box! It should be arriving later today, if it's not already in our package box, and I will be cloning the drive over this evening.  This will allow me to keep the stats rolling with no/minimal downtime, and let me fold on that box, too, hopefully boosting my numbers back up to 7-8 million ppd for the contest . . . And my quest to overtake troy8d on the team charts. ;-)

I think that's all this 'cranky ol' pimp' has for the moment.
