You can judge the size of the wu by the base credit. I’m seeing anywhere from 11k-ish to over 80k lately. Time per frame (tpf) will also vary with them but the constant is ppd, which should not vary a great deal. If it does then start looking at the rig.

Wow, CPU folding really isn't worth it unless you have a super-high core count CPU is it?  I'm running on 6 threads just to see how it does & it's saying only 89k PPD for it X_X Power to PPD wise that's a complete waste compared to a GPU that would pull the same wattage.  Big oof.  I'll let it finish this one then remove the slot again.

Yup I just removed my CPU slot - a lot of fan noise and a lot of resources used for very little return. GPU is far better.

DHL Came through with an early delivery as well.  I may actually make my PPD after all lol.

Waiting on a work unit to complete, and then I will be adding the last 3090 into the mix, and letting everything run.

I made another effort to PM those showing zero points. Told them they were LATE to the party.
I2528014 responded they were having OS issues, and is returning after repair. I did PM regardless of Team, so there is that. [even for eastern]

Nice setup!

How are those GPUs connected to the motherboard PCIe slots? Some sort of riser, I just can't see any or figure it out - do you have a link for whatever it is (not that I'm getting one, just curious).

Never mind, zoomed in, I can see it now, just really long riser cables. Nice!

Re: 2020 Time Zone Challenge 2020/12/20 13:23:29 (permalink)
so I totally wasn't expecting it but I picked up a couple of 2080 Ti's yesterday. Sadly I'm only keeping one, but for right now they are both mine and have thus been folding since I was able to set them up. I do have a question for anyone that folds on similar hardware though because they seem to be acting differently from my 1xxx series cards. In some work loads they seem to go full bore pulling ~250 watts and putting up ~3mil ppd each but others seem to only draw ~80 watts putting up only ~1mil ppd. Can anyone explain this to me?

**edit-  If anyone has the EVGA water block for the 2080 Ti XC ultra (11G-P4-2383-KR) and is willing to sell it I'd be very grateful.

Some projects/work units are coded to use CUDA and some aren't.

So does it just not make as big of a difference on my 1080 and 1070Ti then? Thanks for the help.

  • In Nvidia Control Panel, change the Power Management Mode to "Prefer maximum performance".
  • In Windows 10, turn on the feature for "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling". Right click on the desktop and choose Display Settings, on the left-hand options choose "Display", scroll down to Graphics settings and click it. On the new window, toggle the "Hardware=accelerated GPU scheduling" to On than restart the computer. Note: on my older CPU/Motherboard, this option does not exist even with Windows 10 installed.
(snip)
Holy crap that ended up embiggening my PPD. According to folding.lar.systems, I was always 14-20% behind other 2080Ti's, and I just figured I got a bum card in the silicon lottery. I did these couple of things (though I have my download set to 98% and I am using a python-based babysitter program to constantly refresh if there's no available WU's), and I am now between dead even with the expected PPD (~4.45M PPD) and a couple percent low.

Thanks!

You could always run them both.   I game and fold at the same time.  2080 Ti can handle it np.  My PPD does take a hit but by not a substantial amount.

Yep, 300mm riser cables. I do that because then I can lay the cards flat and blow are powerful fan over the face of the card to keep them as cold as possible. Also using the winter weather to our advantage. It’s 3c in the garage :-D

Glad it worked out for you. After Scott posted the thread about 6.5 mil/ppd on his 3080's, I was thinking how the heck is he getting that many points so did some digging.
