Well, my z690 Apex board should be here on Tuesday. 12900k and ddr5 already sitting here in the office. I'd like to have a Dark board one day, but with today's supply vs demand, I got what I could out the gate. Has EVGA ever released a board alongside a new CPU launch?

Couldn't justify an Apex board, they're charging $AU1300 for that board in Australia ($AU1060 for the 12900K). The Hero is only $AU100 less but I got it bundled with a 12900K for $AU2049 (should get it tomorrow or the day after). I swear, the computer stores in Australia should ask "Would you like lube to help with your purchase?" because Aussies are getting royally shafted this round. The Hero, Apex & Formula boards are around 40% dearer than their Z590 predecessors.

Those are crazy high prices. I feel for you man. Apex here in US cost me $755 shipped, taxes included. Most I have ever spent for a motherboard.

I have my 12700K running at 5.2Ghz P core and 4.1Ghz E core so far and it does help a bit, but I'd have to concur with the video in that for the most part if you have an "AI" or "auto OC" feature on your board to just use that and then back off on the voltages a bit to reach an acceptable voltage or temp you're looking for and the performance will largely be the same if you're just doing regular stuff like gaming or any rendering work.

The thumbnail can be a bit misleading since I do think it's worth it to overclock 12gen Intel CPUs to at least get them running at a 5Ghz all P core and 4Ghz E core speed as you can see measurable differences in most workloads at those speeds up from stock.

However perhaps the most interesting thing is playing around with the gear ratios and memory. Either I got a really strong memory controller in my 12700K or they have made a substantial improvement to the IMC over 11th gen. With my previous 11700K I was only barely able to get the memory to run in Gear 1 with 4000Mhz memory (2000Mhz 1:1 ratio) and that was with quite a bit of added voltage to VCCIO2 and having to slacken the timings on the memory. With this 12700K I'm able to run 4400Mhz in Gear 1 (2200Mhz 1:1 ratio) and keep tighter timings of CL 16-19-19-42 with my memory. Though 4500 seems to be a hard wall in Gear 1 as no matter what I do it keeps failing to post unless it's allowed to default to Gear 2.

4400Mhz in Gear 1 @ C16 is friggin impressive!  edit: Wait, that's DDR5 though right, I had DDR4 settings running through my mind.

No, I'm on a DDR4 variant of Z690. This is with my Corsair Dominator Platinum kit that has Samsung B-die ICs though. I'm still tinkering a fiddling with settings to decide what I want my "daily driver" settings to be. I'm leaning on just backing down the P cores to 5Ghz and E cores to 4Ghz and just running the memory at 4000Mhz with 16-16-16-38 timings and dropping the DRAM voltage to 1.45v and calling it a day. We'll see though, I'm still getting my feet wet with 12th gen so we'll see.

It's not bad to be sure, though I haven't seen many other results with DDR4 since I think the majority of people went with DDR5 so it's a bit hard to judge where I'm at in regards to the mean average.

we have been working under the assumption that Gear 1 (DDR4) topped out at 3733 so this is a big shift to that.

Found a review using gear 1 at 4000Mhz with 12th gen here:

at around the 2 min mark he goes into what speeds he was using.

Purchased my 12900K and Apex Board today.

Here Canada the Apex is stating not available until 18th Dec .....

Prices too bad north of the Border,as in:
- 12900K $749 CDN
- Asus Z690 Apex $850 CDN

No DDR5 RAM available here yet, unfortunately, but likely wont get this build done until Jan anyhow, considering the pre-purchase availability date of Apex.

The Asus Z690 Maximus Extreme is cray priced.....my Maximus XI-Extreme I believe was around $800 CDN 3 yrs ago.....the Z690 Extreme is $1350 CDN !

I've always wanted to try out the Apex Board, so we will see!

That's nothing more than their "officially supported" list. As I said I was able to get to 4000Mhz in gear on a 11700K and a MSI Z590 board with just a little fiddling.

Well, my z690 Apex board should be here on Tuesday. 12900k and ddr5 already sitting here in the office. I'd like to have a Dark board one day, but with today's supply vs demand, I got what I could out the gate. Has EVGA ever released a board alongside a new CPU launch?

Wonder why here in Canada no Apex available until 18 Dec ??
See release date...although I went ahead with the pre purchase!!

https://www.newegg.ca/asus-rog-maximus-z690-apex/p/N82E16813119522

Unfortunately no DDR5 anywhere here!!

Yes, Evga released X58 vanilla Boards along with Intel I7 920 Bloomfield...Classified Boards appeared shortly after. Not sure about X79 as I had moved to Asus Motherboards by then ;)

Those prices are really crazy...
considering our dollars (I believe) are close to par, Im paying
$749 CDN for a 12900k and $850 CDN for the Asus Z690 Maximus Apex Board.

The Asus Maximus Z690 Extreme is "stupidly priced" at $1350 CDN, I'll take the Apex and save $500 ;) , probably better OC'ing results as well !

Damn... another issue (this is not the DX12 issue, this is a DRM issue - specifically Denuvo).

Damn... another issue (this is not the DX12 issue, this is a DRM issue - specifically Denuvo).

Most people are making a mountain out of a molehill to be frank. I like most of Jayz videos but really he's just fishing for clicks, it's really not that big a deal as the vast majority of those titles are fixed by using the OS that the 12th gen CPUs were designed for (Windows 11) and the others are older or are already fixed. Arguably the biggest title is Assassins Creed Valhalla or Jedi Fallen Order can be worked around by disabling the E cores if you just really have to play them right now. This isn't on the magnitude of something like Destiny 2 just flat out not working period with AMD's Ryzen 3000 series CPUs with no work around in the meantime. Yes both are less than ideal and unfortunately things like this will continue to happen with the draconian type DRMs developers like to punish their legitimate customers with but as I sad at least with this one there are measures you can take if you absolutely insist on playing these games right now.

I still have trouble coming to grips with the fact that we have to "win" the chance to give a company our money.  And typically buy some piece of crud we don't want to get it.

Right! What a crock. I have been mindlessly entering everyday, hoping for a one-off w/o said "crud". I was "awarded" the chance to buy a GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce RTX 3060 Ti however, it comes along with a B550 Aorus Master, which I don't want or need. Anyone want this combo?

If only there was enough DDR5 stock sent to Australia to cover the number of CPU's that were available!

best buy has 12900ks in stock again so seems like stock on those is pretty decent, can save some over other stores at least.

Re: Whos ordered there 12th gens? 2021/11/11 09:35:53 (permalink)
So, just reporting back here. I had an issue with my AORUS Elite board and had to return it so for the time being I'm on a slightly lower end Gigabyte Gaming X DDR4. This board is nowhere near as good at pushing memory speeds as the AORUS Elite was. Really not sure what's going on here but the IMC is on the CPU so I didn't think it would make this much of an impact but as it stands right now with this board on the F4 latest BIOS, I'm only able to get the memory in Gear 1 to 4000Mhz with CL 16-18-18-36 timings (2000Mhz 1:1 memory controller freq). It has to be the lower end VRM on this board not delivering as clean power to the CPU or memory would be my best guess.

Not surprising to be sure as with a lower end board you will get lower end features but thought I'd just put it out there. I'm probably going to end up getting an ASUS Z690 ROG Strix A board when they become more available as that seems to be the best DDR4 board available.
