arcteris hey guys. i was interested in getting the evga supernova ga 850w directly from evga. I had spoken to customer service and they said they were aware of the issues it had in the past and that that batch of psu's had issue but they have since then fixed them. Should i still go for this? or go for something else. ive only ever used evga psu's and never had problems with them but I also dont have a super huge budget anymore (since i finally got a 3080 xc3 ultra). i have a ryzen 7 3700x if that helps.
Why risk it?

I would rock 1000W minimum to be safe.

i guess im dumb. but sounds like solid answer. ill search for something else. codyf112 I would rock 1000W minimum to be safe.

That's way above what you need even for a 3090, even accounting "safety", plus the price jump from 850w to 1000w is considerable. 850w is enough for everything, even paired with a greedy PSU.

mohammad0618 Corsair 850x gold Power supply is really good, comes with a 10 year warranty.
I just ordered one in anticipation for the 3080ti. I'm on a fairly minimal system so hoping that works.

This is a follow up to the post I made a couple of months ago about a Seasonic Focus+ 850W shutting my pc down due to high transient on a EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3. Seasonic sent me over a Seasonic Focus PX850 and the problem is completely solved, so if anyone is wondering about getting or not the model, maybe its a good idea since it gives enough power for a ryzen 9 5900x oc and the gpu oc too.

In both my systems I am using 1200 watt Phantek revolt-x PSUs.. fully modular. They are based on Seasonic and have had very positive reviews, They also can be purchased for between $249 and $279. - Low cost - No reports of blowing up systems - Can even run two separate MBs if your using a low end GPU in both I run it as one system and I am using a EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra GPU in my primary rig. Some people laughed at me on here a while back for running this PSU because it was not a "cool" brand. I dunno... a lot of "cool" brand models are frying GPUs I think... also I saved over 200 bucks going with this brand. Its also Plat certified.

Will a Corsair RM750X be sufficient for the 3080ti? With no overclocking? Context: Ryzen 7 5800X, Asus B550M TUF motherboard, two RAM sticks at 3600hz, three SSDs (two SATA, one NVMe), two HDDs, only regular mouse and keyboard plus bluetooth dongle.

just want to drop some info- I have a EVGA G3 850 with a 3090 FTW 3090 ULTRA and a AMD 6800. I have a watt meter plugged in to watch usage and it pull 700 watts under full load. that's 100% usage on CPU (9700k 5.1 all core) and both GPU's. after boot up and idle its around 100-150. I have a 3070ti coming for my son's minecraft rig if anyone is interested in its full power draw.

Just got my 3080ti FTW last week, and mine is running perfect with a EVGA SuperNova 850w PSU (using 3 separate PCI power connectors) The only major complaint I now have with my GPU is for the first time ever, I now know what “CPU Bottleneck” means, LOL!! I can still play all my games maxed out, buttery smooth at 3880X1440, but all cores/threads pretty much stay near 100% in games now. Never seen my Core i7 4790k hit 68c water cooled before now. Starting to save for a new Core i9 10850k, 10 Core CPU, Motherboard and DDR4. I always buy EVGA motherboards, but it looks like EVGA is getting away from them as they only have 1 motherboard on their site, and at $400, it’s not cheap.

I helped my bro in law upgrade his rig to a 3070 from a 580. he has the same CPU and he was immediately sad because he came to the same conclusion. those CPU's were great for much longer than we expected

Yea, I thought with 4 cores, and 8 threads total, plus overclocked, I would be good, but nope, LOL! Hell, I watched a youtube video this weekend showing a current gen Core i3 whip the hell out of my old, tired Core i7 4790k!! I was shocked to say the least, but like you said..Those CPU's were great for many years! I can still game on it fine, but I now know there is soooo much more my 3080ti can give if I upgrade my CPU/Mobo

I just wanted to share my experience with a Seasonic TX-850 and RTX 3090 FE with random reboots. First: Undervolting seems to solve the Problem.
Got the PSU on September 2020 and the RTX 3090 on November 2020. I played a lot. Much VR (Alyx, The Walking Dead), played Days Gone in 4K, RDR2 in 4K, Metro Exodus and Cold War in UWQHD. Everything was fine. Never got a single problem.
Then I thought, it's time for Cyberpunk.
Played about 12 hours and then it happened....reboot. I thought, ok maybe sometimes such things can happen. Played another 10 hours...reboot....and again reboot.
I noticed that reboots always occurred when making a savegame or if the game creates autosaves. Also, I noticed that the Game always stutters while saving. Checked afterburners hardware monitor and saw massive voltage spikes (over 1V) always when entering the menu or creating a savegame.
So I decided to give undervolting a try. Heard good things about it. And now...it works.
The results are very interesting.
At the moment I just use the fixed voltage method with 1890 Mhz and 0.850V. The power draw has reduced about 30W. I even got 200 points more in Port Royal Benchmark. For about 12hours now, Cyberpunk runs without a single reboot.
There are no voltage spikes over 1V and only sometimes the power limit is reached. Before, the card constantly hit the power limit. I'm still testing, but for now it looks pretty good. If anything changes, I will report back.

What's are some relatively cheap PSU that can handle a 3080 FTW3's power spikes? Ideally < $100.

The new EVGA generation of G6 series is great, Using with a Kingpin 3090 at just 1000k, and I would imagine the P6 and P+ are just as good and better than anything I have ever used. Only PSU I will get in the future

The answer to your question is probably none. Are you seriously going to spend almost a $1,000. on a GPU and then jeopardize it and your system with a dirt cheap PSU? At the very least, check EVGA B-stock for a decent 750-850W PSU as they do show up there sometimes. Personally, I'd go with a 850W to give yourself some headroom.

Fair enough. What would you say are some safe series? As I understand it the issue isn't with the wattage, but the series.

As far as recommendations, the best guidance I can give you is to go through this thread and look at what people are using, not thinking about, and their comments. Look for a common denominator. My personal standard is that I do not skimp on PSUs ever, they are too important. Currently, I have a EVGA T2 1000W in my system and a T2 850W in my wife's build.

Thanks for the info! I have no plans for overclocking, and I'm planning either a 5600 or 10400F for CPU, so I'm thinking I won't need that much wattage.

At the very least, check EVGA B-stock for a decent 750-850W PSU as they do show up there sometimes. Personally, I'd go with a 850W to give yourself some headroom.
Fair enough. What would you say are some safe series? As I understand it the issue isn't with the wattage, but the series.
Superflower Leadex platform (SF brand, EVGA G2, G3, P2, T2), anything Corsair RM850X or better, Seasonic Prime Ultra. The RM850x is $140 on Amazon. The SF Leadex III Gold 850w goes on sale on Newegg for $120. The EVGA 850w G3 is on sale at Newegg for $125.

HenryZhu123 Thanks for the info! I have no plans for overclocking, and I'm planning either a 5600 or 10400F for CPU, so I'm thinking I won't need that much wattage.
If you go Intel, try to get something with an IGPU. 11600K is a good bet, even if you don't overclock it. Make sure you get some fast ram, at least 3600CL16, even if it's cheap stuff.

-p4r4- I just wanted to share my experience with a Seasonic TX-850 and RTX 3090 FE with random reboots.
Had the same problem with my 850watt gold it would spike and shut my system down as well running a evga 3090 ftw3 ultra.now i have a 1200watt platnium 850watts is not enough ..imo
