I always change these settings in Global when I install drivers

Ambient Occlusion to Quality
Single Display Performance Mode
Prefer Maximum Performance
Texture Filtering to High Quality
Triple Buffer On
Vertical Sync On

everything else at default, Not had a problem at all with these on any driver.

The only time I use the program settings tab is when a game doesn't have a  MSAA or AF ingame option so I force it.

You force Vsync and Trip Buff 24/7? Do you have aero disabled or something or do you just prefer them to be both on in any game?  I mention aero because it solves tearing in some cases without the need for vsync.

Is the AO quality only apply to Nvidia driver based AO or does it affect in game AO?
Also forgot about texture quality to high so thanks for that.  Very few games need that down and I can do that with the profiles.

its not a good idea to globally force ambient occlusion on at all.  it can cause issues in some games. it best to use the in game option if available and if not then try on a  game by game basis. not that you would even be able to tell that its on other that performance tanking in some games. triple buffering from the control panel has no impact on DX games. and its silly to force vsync on globally.  and I will never understand why some people force prefer maximum performance on either.  all that does is force the card to needlessly run at full clocks when there is no need for it to.

Ambient Occlusion to Quality  Not supported in many games
Texture Filtering to High Quality  Not supported in any game, and disables some driver performance optimizations in many games

Triple Buffer On  not supported in many games
Vertical Sync On  using this "classic" Vsync setting will result in fps dropping to 30 whenever your framerate drops to 59fps or below. For users who need this setting due to poor monitor response, Nvidia's new "adaptive Vsync" setting is highly preferred as the half refresh rate step down is eliminated.

as for the AO that depends on the game, some games have in game based AO settings, where as others games don't so the driver adds it

Also maniac you are wrong, I never had fps drops to 30 automaticly when dropping to 59 or lower

It doesn't harm the cards lifespan though from what I understand.  Temps are the same either way. In regards to the High Performance mode.   I also set it for when I OC the card a bit....right now you are probably right that it is pointless.  If I am wrong and it does lead to the card potentially dying sooner please correct me.

No disrespect bro, but the NVCP Vsync setting works in a certain way and has done so for a very long time.
While this -can- be effected by other settings (particularly when also enabled with in-game Vsync settings) and frame buffer size, its behaviors are -extremely- well known and documented.

Your are completely incorrect
Here is one of the best descriptions http://www.tweakguides.com/Graphics_9.html

Quote
"There is however a more fundamental problem with enabling VSync, and that is it can significantly reduce your overall framerate, often dropping your FPS to exactly 50% of the refresh rate. This is a difficult concept to explain, but it just has to do with timing. When VSync is enabled, your graphics card becomes a slave to your monitor. If at any time your FPS falls just below your refresh rate, each frame starts taking your graphics card longer to draw than the time it takes for your monitor to refresh itself. So every 2nd refresh, your graphics card just misses completing a new whole frame in time. This means that both its primary and secondary frame buffers are filled, it has nowhere to put any new information, so it has to sit idle and wait for the next refresh to come around before it can unload its recently completed frame, and start work on a new one in the newly cleared secondary buffer. This results in exactly half the framerate of the refresh rate whenever your FPS falls below the refresh rate."

Its has been this way for a very very long time
Telling me I am wrong, does not make you right... it just means what your running and your hardware config does not fall into the buffer/timing issue.

Thanks Maniac
@Nite Aero glass is known to solve screen tearing issues in games and video where even both driver based and game based v sync still produce it when enabled.  It is a way better method than forcing v sync through the driver.  Fixes issues in WoW, Netflix etc.
I have yet to experiment with adaptive v sync yet.  It does from my research seem to work well with the Batman game.

That's sick, and I'm sorry to hear that Maniac. I hope the police are onto it - death threats are bad enough to adults, but to children! Wow. That could be jail time depending where you are. At the very least the perp needs psychological help.

Hello, I can report that these drivers have worked perfectly for me and I have been stress testing to ensure stability. I've crashed only due to excessive overclock. I performed extensive install operations correctly for new drivers, and only have installed GPU Drivers and PHYSX Drivers, performing a clean install with precision and RTSS shut down(uninstalled actually) beforehand. This is my normal driver upgrade procedure.

I also just played an hour and change of BF3 everything maxed out and 4x MSAA , no motion blur. Not one issue at all.  Same here just the driver and physx and no issues. Way smoother than my last card as well.

Excellent advice in this thread...

I only change NVCP global settings to single monitor and prefer max performance as well.  Unfortunately I haven't been uninstalling Precision with driver updates, just disabling start with windows.  Will update my methodology according the method given by maniac.

Interesting reads and opinions... Personally... It took my setup four tries before I could get it to install. I had not ever installed the Nvidia experience option, always did the "Custom"... For some reason or another. The only way I could get this driver to install was to include the Nvidia experience...

I try to read other threads with warnings like this...

Wow, brother,
Didn't know peeps get that scarry on here. Sorry you went through that. hopefully the culprit was collected and dealt with.  I agree with the rest of the guys I omitted the "GeForce Experience" part of the software update, and have experienced no issues.  it could be the culprit.

Re:WARNING: 320.18 Drivers are Killing GPU's 2013/06/10 19:11:05 (permalink)
I'm not saying everything in the article is right, but when I installed the drivers I didn't use GF Experience, or have AB/Precision X installed. It may simply have been other software on my system giving me issues, but I saw artifacting(In BF3) and driver crashing on both my GTX 285 Classified and a GTX 480, both of which I know function perfectly. (Now running 314.22 with no issues.) I actually spent 2 hours on with EVGA tech support for the 480, and even they couldn't figure it out. I only solved the issue by wiping the 320.18 drivers and using 314.22.

I'm not saying the drivers are definitely the issue, but that was the issue for me. Also on OCN a lot of guys are having problems as well, but again I'm not saying it's all fact. I'm also not trying to win a peeing match here, so please don't take it that way. (Not to anyone in particular.)

These rumors always make my LOL, and i mean really loud ....

Both my rig are running 320 drivers ( a GTX780 and a GTX650ti ). ++ i ran a 670 at maxed clocks, benching 3dmark11, new 3dmark, heaven and valley last week on 320 too, nothing failed on me.

This is just normal random people having normal random issue with noraml random hardware and sometime normal user stupidity. ( sorry for those who are stupid ).

What happened to you?  Please explain and did you do the full driver install or custom?

Custom install, drivers and PhysX only, no 3D or Audio or Experience. Day 1 on the 480, was getting driver crashes and crashes from BF3 to desktop, and when it would run BF3 it was with artifacting. Day 2 when I powered up it would load the Win 7 logo at first, with the 4 orbs that form the windows flag, and then it would BSOD with code 0x000000050 "PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA". (System was at full stock, not OC and not a RAM issue, I tried 7 different sticks.) Day 3 I ran 314.22 on the 480, no issues.

Issues on the 285 Classified were the same, but I just went with 314.22 after artifacting and crashing, so I didn't get to the BSOD point yet on the 285. Now on 314.22 on the 285C and it is all fine in games, Vantage, etc.

Also when I installed drivers it was on a fresh Windows 7 Pro SP1 install on both cards. (I've reinstalled Windows a few times in the last week so that I could reorganize everything and get all of my games on and such.)

Guys, I am on a 570 and have no issues what so ever with 320.18 drivers.  I get my 780 tomorrow.  Will I have issues with 780 even if I have no issues with 570?

You have to modify the INF file of the 314.22 drivers to give support to the 780, look at this guide to find out how

I had no issues with 320 WHQL whatsoever, reverte back to 314 WHQL only after reading a few threads about potential hardware damage coming from 320 WHQL. yet I experienced zero trouble with 670 SLI when overclocked heavily (relatively speaking for my cards), gave me an awesome boost in 3dmark... then again I played only Civ5 in meantime, had no time for my latest favorite AvP 2010 ;) (yeah I'm a tad behind with most games haha!). I don't play BF3 or AC3 sadly so can't compare with you guys.

interestingly I had weird stability issues resulting with BSOD (most kinds, 050 among them) sometime ago which I narrowed down to some beta version of AIDA64 which got updated on its own (yes, I selected pulling beta releases in settings). no problem since I re-installed latest stable aida64, everything else same on either 314 WHQL or 320 WHQL.
