Yes, it was just yesterday I pulled my 580 SLI's out of my system (for good) and installed first of my GTX 680's for testing in prep for my SLI card coming in on tuesday *they were also running 320.18 since its release.

Since I have a triple boot system, I re-installed 320.18 on all of them (including Win8) and now have over 12hrs testing completed (including 5hrs in BF3)
Zero issues have been seen and I am not concerned at all about the current reports enough to consider removing it.

Pull up this page then scroll down to comments.  A LOT of hate of people claiming that these drivers "killed their card".

I wonder if these guys installed their drivers using "express" OR ran the new software experience program.  I'm going to load them up here in another hour or so.  I don't expect problems.

Even with the Nvidia GeForce Experience, as long you do the clean install check box and close any background programs it should be fine anyways.

Read the comments..... it certainly appears to be novice users

Perhaps I should post up -again- how to avoid all this

I just wonder what "killed my card" actually means...black screen...driver failures?  Just a ton of hyperbole without any specifics.  Yup, sounds like novice users to me and they are MAD!

Re:WARNING: 320.18 Drivers are Killing GPU's 2013/06/09 23:37:52 (permalink)
For BF3 users who have installed the GeForce Experience -and/or- who have installed Nvidia drivers while Precision and/or RTSS was NOT TURNED OFF
*AND----> are having problems or texture issues

The recovery is posted below

Download 320.49 WHQL (not the BETA version)
get a copy of it pasted onto your desktop (to avoid known Admin and AV issues)

Now go to START/CONTROL PANEL/Programs and Features
Find the entry for Nvidia GeForce Experience and UNINSTALL it
REBOOT (do NOT skip this reboot)

Now open Precision, then open settings and UNCHECK "Start with Windows"
Now CLOSE it using the "X" in the top right hand corner.
Again, go to START/CONTROL PANEL/Programs and Features
Look for the Riva Tuner entry and UNINSTALL it
Again REBOOT (do NOT skip this reboot)

After rebooting, go to START/CONTROL PANEL/Programs and Features
Find the EVGA Precision entry and UNINSTALL it
*during the uninstall a box will pop up asking to "save profiles/data if updating or uninstalling.."
YOU MUST ANSWER -NO- TO THIS QUESTION (this info must NOT be saved or corruption will be passed on)
after the uninstall is complete, REBOOT (do NOT skip this reboot)

NOTE: if you did NOT -EVER- use the Geforce Experience for BF3, you DO NOT have to do the below with the config file(skip this step as its NOT needed)
Now, go to your "My Documents" folder
Look for the yellow Battlefield 3 folder and open it
Open the yellow folder marked "Settings" and open it
right click and DELETE the config file shown below in the screenshot)

NOW, close all open programs and your browser
Then: Launch the Nvidia 320.49 WHQL installer
Choose CUSTOM MODE
Uncheck -all- component entries EXCEPT for the Graphics driver (greyed out) and PHYSX
*do NOT install Nvidia update or the GeForce Experience components
-->make SURE you also put a check mark in the box that says "Perform a clean install"
Hit NEXT and install your driver
After the install is complete REBOOT the computer once (do NOT skip this reboot)

You may now reinstall Precision 4.2.0 (latest version only) *I suggest unchecking the RTSS addon
after it is installed, REBOOT once (do not skip this reboot)

Now launch BF3 and it will REBUILD the config file
*you will need to RESET your BF3 ingame settings..
--->as the rebuilt config file will default to AUTO Detect and a Preset will be active.
Set it back to CUSTOM and put in your preferred ingame settings
AFTER you make the changes, SAVE THEM and then QUIT the game completely, so the settings changes take effect properly (textures and shaders) AND that the settings changes SYNC correctly with ORIGIN.

NOW TEST

Re:WARNING: 320.18 Drivers are Killing GPU's 2013/06/09 23:51:55 (permalink)
It should be noted, that if you didnt install the GFE or Nvidia update and/or forgot to SHUT DOWN Precision and the RTSS when installing a Nvidia driverset....

You wouldnt be having issues and have to do all the above

I always just uninstall Precision, reboot and then Custom mode install with Graphics driver, PhysX and Clean install ONLY
I always reboot after any driver install

Then I check for a newer version of Precision, and put back in whatever is the latest
*I never install the RTSS for normal use

Done in this manner..... you do not GIVE yourself problems

Re:WARNING: 320.18 Drivers are Killing GPU's 2013/06/10 00:01:06 (permalink)
Hey guys just got my 770 SC ACX a few days ago.  Installed on a totally fresh system.  I was wondering if the older driver known to be working fine with BF3 version 314.22 work on the new 770 cards?  Would I need to uninstall precision x prior to rolling back?
Also what is the best way to roll back to a prior driver on Nvidia?
Thanks.  I saw what maniac posted but I always install GPU monitoring software after the driver is installed and system rebooted.  I did however uninstall and reinstall a newer version of PHYSX with precision running.  Is this ok to do?  Precision is only set to its defaults.  So it isn't using the Riva Tuner App and not set to start with windows(MSI AB never used to work this way for me anyway so I opted to leave it uncheck).

I haven't had the time to install BF3 yet but with my connection it would take all night.  Just want to know what driver to be on before I bother.

Thanks Guys,
CG Spender

P.S. No overclock past the stock sc currently.

Never EVER go backwards with Nvdia driversets, without Uninstalling Precision and the RTSS -and- answering NO when asked to save data and profiles.
Reboot once after doing so

Then download whatever driver you want that is supported, and launch it in CUSTOM Mode
Uncheck everything but Graphics driver and PhysX
*make sure to put a check in "perform a clean install"
Reboot once when the driver install is complete

Ok thanks I think I did everything fine but just going to follow the steps you put up there in case the PhysX software that I had to install to stop Dishonored from doing its first time start up bug messed something up.  Is the PhysX software that comes with a game different that the stuff that comes with the driver?

The PhysX version in 320.18 and 314.22 are the same
At the end of the driver install, it will note that and leave it intact

I cannot comment on Dishonored as I dont have the title and have no experience with it.

Thanks a bunch man. :D
Steam version of Dishonored tries to install an old version of PhysX until you uninstall any Physx software from the computer and strangely reinstall it.  Terrible game for PC don't recommend it.

lol, was reading the comments on the OP link. Yeah... I'm not convinced it's killing GPU's. It would need to play with voltages to do that.

Maniac one last question(sorry to mildly derail):  I assume the Riva Tuner App works the same as the MSI AB one in the regard that if it works independently to provide an OSD overlay.  I don't see it in my tray icons with everything set to default in precision so I assume it is not even running just installed and would run if I were to change something in Precision to prompt it to start(also like Afterburner).  Would I be correct in my assumption?

I opted to install it for occasional use but it is normally of in games.  Stayed away from Nvidia Experience as I don't need a program to optimize a games settings for me and if I were to use one I think I would go with Nvidia Inspector since it can be totally disabled(not sure about experience) and is more of a manual type thing.

Riva Tuner (RTSS) works fine
The problems happen when it becomes corrupted
*this most often occurs when uninstalling or installing drivers -while- the program is active

*Do NOT assume that its OFF.
Should RTSS become corrupted, the primary failure is that it cannot be shutdown and "auto" starts!!
-->You -MUST- open TaskManager and review the list for "RTSS.exe"
If its NOT showing, your OK
*If it -is- showing (and Precision is shutdown) the it has been CORRUPTED and is auto starting. You will need to completely uninstall it and MUST answer -NO- when asked to save anything... reboot once after uninstalling.

After the reboot CHECK in the TaskManager AGAIN! I have seen users with RTSS auto-starts who have uninstalled Precision.
If it is STILL there, then a reboot into SafeMode is needed and DELETE the Riva Tuner folder

So it appears the Nvidia Geforce Experience software is what is killing the GPUs?  Just avoid it at all costs and install driver as normal?

Precision and AfterBurner are both made by the same person, Alex 'Unwinder' Nicolaychuk. Yes, you would be correct in your assumption.

So it appears the Nvidia Geforce Experience software is what is killing the GPUs?  Just avoid it at all costs and install driver as normal?

I see no evidence -any- GPU's are being killed by anything.....

There "may" be an issue with the GeForce Experience writing incorrect data into config files...
I dont really see how that could KILL anything except for trashing a given game, running a benchmark would confirm this.

Most likely what is being reported is -simple user errors- and the normal failure rates for retail cards.

Awesome great clarifications.  The riva tuner app did the same with MSI AB on my AMD card so seems to be the same thing.  So when changing an nVIDIA driver version the best bet to not screw anything up is to?:
-Download driver and leave installer copy on desktop
-Close EVGA Precision
-Uninstall RTSS (completely by deleting settings) > Reboot
-Uninstall Precision (completely by deleting settings) > Reboot
-Run Driver Installer Custom just the Driver and the Physx(already do....came from AMD so this stuff is easy mode....too much bloatware and I don't use HDMI sound) and set to Do a clean install > Reboot
-Reapply any Global Settings changes(since the clean reinstall seems to wipe them) and Program Settings in 3D options
-Install Precision and RTSS and don't run it when the installer closes. > Reboot
-Enable Precision
-Profit

I assume the clean install is only needed when rolling back or fixing a dirty install of the same current driver and can be left out if you are updating to a newer release.

thats what I'm guessing yes, cause geforce experience started on these drivers, has to be a conflict somewhere thier

I did a custom install (like everyone should) to disable that, but still wasn't gonna chance continuing to use them, I feel better on 314.22

nvidia NEEDS to come out with new drivers fast though, cause the GTX770/780 is only supported on these without a INF edit, its a good thing the 4GB 770 cards aren't out yet, I would have been in the same situation

Thats about right...
I would NOT use settings changes in the Global Tab of the NVCP
*most recent games use custom versions of AA and AO. Global tab changes can sometimes -cause- issues with these.

If you feel the need to experiment with NVCP changes for a given game -only- do so in the "Programs Settings" Tab of the NVCP for that games .exe

Ya the only things I changed for Global was enable Single Monitor mode(default was multi even though I have one display) and set the power management to High Performance which pegs the Core and Mem 24/7.  I am not a big fan of injecting anything via the driver unless it is necessary or known to be stable and better than the in game.  Most of all that stuff can be done in the profiles part of the 3d settings.  I really like the way this GUI works in contrast to Catalyst.  More user friendly as I consider my knowledge level to be moderate.  This is my first built rig so I have plenty of learning still.

Excellent...I'm just going to omit the geforce experience and install 320.18 with confidence :)

I always change these settings in Global when I install drivers

Ambient Occlusion to Quality
Single Display Performance Mode
Prefer Maximum Performance
Texture Filtering to High Quality
Triple Buffer On
Vertical Sync On

everything else at default, Not had a problem at all with these on any driver.

The only time I use the program settings tab is when a game doesn't have a  MSAA or AF ingame option so I force it.

Dont forget to uncheck the Nvidia Update as well.....
As it will "prompt" you to update your driver (and you might forget you have Precision or the RTSS running) and it perform a default express install if you let it.
