I am upgrading from 4 gb(2x2gb) to 6 gb (3x 2gb) on my 790i Ultra. Im wondering what is the best way to layout the sticks in the motherboard. I currently have the 2 sticks in the 2nd and forth slots (from the left) Any special way to put in 3 sticks? I know this motheboard worked better for me in the 2nd and 4th slots with 2 sticks. Old sticks are ocz reaper 1333 and ive now got Patriot Viper II Sector 7 ddr 1600 3gb

You cannot successfully run those 3 triple-channel RAM modules on the 790i Ultra MoBo. The 790i is a dual-channel board. Those modules are designed for the i7 MoBo's.

Even if you were to install 3 sticks of the proper RAM, it would only run in single-channel mode. You will not be able to even run 2 of them because they are low-voltage (1.65v) modules...1.8v-2.0v modules are required.

You should either obtain another identical matching pair of what you already have (OCZ's) but, if you are looking for a complete RAM upgrade, I will recommend the modules that I am running. They work very well and are at a reasonable price.

The board supports 8GB RAM max. If you buy 2 sets like I am running you will be good.

The RAM that you linked is not going to work either. READ the spex...it is also low-voltage (1.65v) and is for the P55 MoBo's.

Ok jeffrey, so i got my new ram and im running it currently unlinked because i do not overclock my processor. Is there something i need to do to sync it at 3ghz processor and 1600 mhz ram? Or do i have to do unlinked for that to work?

Re:Upgrading ram 2010/09/11 00:18:34 (permalink)
Just to be clear, did you get 4GB's or 8GB's? Please update your sig. with this info so, everyone will know exactly what you are running.

You do not want to run your CPU at stock 1333MHz and your RAM at 1600MHz as this will cause errors due to CPU bottleneck. You can underclock your RAM to run at 1333MHz to match the CPU by linking and syncing.

However; to REALLY make your CPU and RAM "SHINE" and put a huge smile on your face...you should seriously consider letting "us" OC your system to 4.05GHz at 1800MHz. You will not harm your CPU doing this if, that is why you said that you do not OC.

We could at least try a milder OC of your CPU to 3.6GHz @ 1600MHz...that way your RAM can at least run at it's rated spex. This will be extremely easy to do if you only install 4GB's of the new Vipers I suggested.

I cannot run at 1600MHz with my 8GB's...I do not know why but, my system just absolutely refuses to do so. I have no problem running at 1600MHz with just 4GB's installed though.

Think things over and let me know what you want to do.

Re:Upgrading ram 2010/09/11 07:49:56 (permalink)
Jeffrey, i got 8 gigs but cannot get it to post with link and sync at 3.6 or 4.05ghz. Keep getting c1 on the bios LED chip. Right now im running 4 gbs at 3.6ghz @ 1600mhz ram. Running fine so far. Havent done a test with the game that crashes yet. Any ideas on how to get 8GB to post and run correctly?

edit: Just tried the game, worked fine for a long time then a hardlock, what should my other timings on the memory be beside the 7-7-7-20? I have it at 2t and all the others at auto, but i assume there still needs to be more tweaking with the other timings?

I will be very happy to provide you a copy of my my BIOS settings for running 4GB's at 1600MHz or all 8GB's at 1800MHz or both, if you wish. If you are just gonna run 2 sticks at either speed, install them in the black slots.

Your system may or may not run with the same exact settings as mine but, it will be a good starting point for you to try. Either way, it should be fairly easy to fine-tune them to what your system will like.

Just let me know where you would like to start and I'll work with you until we get it straight.

OK but, you really should be running MemTest first, after making changes to the RAM settings and then IBT Stress Test in Windows after your memory passes. Once your changes pass both tests then, try your game out.

Run it for 20 passes at Standard Level. If that passes then, run again at Max Level. Be sure to keep a close eye on your temps.

It is possible that your game crashes could be attributed to your GFX card. We need to get your system stable with the OC before worrying about that.

to be honest, i didnt even look at temps, i live in the mountains, always a cool ambient temp here. Should i use everest to watch temps? And when you say "ibt at max" did you mean just the standard test i did of 20?
