Hi Shamino, thanks SO MUCH for the fast reply! Response times like this make it a no-brainer to buy EVGA. A few more questions.. 1) Is memory treated as one big pool that both CPU's share, or can you set it up so each CPU has its own memory? If it's a shared pool: 2) Does that make the memory speed more critical? (since requests from each chip must be "interleaved") If each gets its own pool: 3) Could you mix different speed memories? (e.g. buy one CPU for now and put in 1600MHz, and a year later add a second, faster CPU with faster 2000MHz+ memory). Does each CPU get its own clock multiplier? 4) Let's say each CPU has 12GB memory. If you run a single-threaded program that requires more than 12GB memory (humour me) will it be able to "borrow" memory from the other CPU's pool? Or would it get an "Out of memory" error and need to start paging to disk? Thanks for your patience; I apologize if these are n00b questions.

I'm sure this is a standard NUMA (non uniform memory access) SMP system that presents a single address space for the entire system. Usually such systems can either be set to "node interleaved" on or off. Off is usually better for operating systems that can take advantage of the system memory map to bind cpus and memory for one particular socket. I don't know if this board would support different speed memory for the different sockets. 4. As in 1, the OS will handle allocation across nodes if the local memory is used up.

From that screenshot it appears to me that you can control the QPI link frequency in the BIOS, right? (Otherwise it would be running somewhere around 4.4GHz at that bclk) Someone in another forum is claiming that QPI multipliers are locked on Nehalems, even though I have read the multiplier values in my CPU's PCI config space and they allow a good range. Can you confirm that the W555 allows you to change the QPI multiplier for Nehalems and Westmeres?

Out of curiosity, why is the Gulftown 980X not going to work? I've been reading that it'll have dual QPI links. Link: Edited out Is that misinformation and/or I'm reading it wrong, or is there some other reason?

Once again, before you are ask if i7 920/980x will work on this board. The Answer : is NO and Shamino have repeat this multiple time. You need 2XQPI . look at the chart above for the upcoming march 16 launch newer Quad and Hex Cores 56XX Xeon. WB

Shamino, can you explain what memory speeds were supported for the maximum config e.g. full (12) ranks DDR3 unbuffered or full DDR3 Reg ECC? I ask this because many server boards go down to 1066/800 DDR3 if full packed with tons of RAM. I thank you in advance for upcoming answer!

Regarding the power draws in the original post, were those measured with turbo enabled or disabled? In my non-OC'd Nehalem board I see a huge power jump with turbo enabled but a much smaller performance increase. Just wondering if you compared turbo on/off since turbo seems to be very power-inefficient.

turbo is just manipulation of cpu multiplier, it is of no consequence here with a fixed cpu speed/vcore
