the watercooling in those TT cases is absolute crap.. but i will leave the comments at that because this obviously isnt the right place for that debate.

when are we gonna get to see some performance numbers?  I want to see some wprime and vantage crushing scores

W555 is the codename, not the actual product name.

Winner of naming contest will be announced when board is ready to be released.

I've got a few cases "candidates":

Old series cases
PC-V2010A/B
Technical data:
http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=208&cl_index=1&sc_index=38&ss_index=95&g=spec
Image:
http://lian-li.com/v2/tw/product/upload/image/V2010/note02s1.jpg

New series cases:
PC-P80
Technical data:
http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=131&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=61&g=spec
Image:
http://lian-li.com/v2/tw/product/upload/image/PC-P80/specification002.jpg

PC-A77
Technical data:
http://www.lian-li.com.tw/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=212&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=61&g=spec
Image:
http://lian-li.com/v2/tw/product/upload/image/A77/a77-vga.jpg

P80 - enogh space for all PCI-Ex slots
PC-A77 - not enough space for all PCI-Ex slots...but physically mthbrd should fit if we mount PSU on top...but even then not all PCI-Ex slots will be available.

I would Get a Mountian Mods case, they are built very well and give you all the options you need without running out of space.
(Note: all MM cases that support the X58 4 way SLI Classified will support this new board)

as another not to zach's post, its gotta be the extended versions of the cases as well, the regular 18" deep ones will not fit it, not without loosing all drive bays or spaces for fan/rads on the front.  Wish i had got the extended version now.

Not only a second PSU, a second circuit! And that's no joke!

I already have a dedicated 120v 20amp circuit for my computer being run into the room so I should be all set

All true, except... they are working on a new mobo tray to fit this. The 4-way tray is tall enough, but not wide enough.

Motherboard will ship with typical 1366 Xeon socket back-plates but normal X58 socket back-plates will be bundled in package

Wait, the "normal" LGA1366 socket doesn't have any backplates - it uses the push-pin method, AFAIK, isn't that correct? In any case, does this actually mean that the Xeon backplates can be removed in the W555? This would really, really mean that we could use any aftermarket heatsink: these usually come with custom backplates.

One year ago, I built a heavy-duty scientific workstation using 24GB of unbuffered, non-ECC memory with two W5580 Xeons (link!) and I am thinking about using the EVGA W555 for the "spiritual successor" of this system, which will be purchased in the next few months or so. In the previous build, I had trouble with the heatsink because the voltage regulator circuitry populated the CPU area like hell, but I guess the digital PWM has a much "lower profile" than the usual multiphasic voltage regulators as in the motherboard I used before... I'm thinking this won't be much of a problem with the W555.

I love the way these workstation motherboards are shaping up, and I will make sure to follow up on the W555 once it's released.

They do use backplates:

The server backplates are different so that you wouldn't be able to install EDIT some 3rd part coolers for example. See this picture, you can see the mounting coming through the hole in the motherboard for you to screw a heatsink down into:

It comes with both so you can choose what type of heatsink you want.

Re:Upcoming EVGA W555 FAQ 2010/03/03 03:58:21 (permalink)

Oh, OK, that's the backplate you meant! Sorry, I was only thinking about the CPU-cooler backplates. You're right, of course.
The server backplates are different so that you wouldn't be able to install a True 120 for example. See this picture, you can see the mounting coming through the hole in the motherboard for you to screw a heatsink down into:

Actually, sorry for the nagging, but just to get the record straight, the True 120 fits just fine (I mentioned it in my post and I even have pictures of that setup in the link I posted, and a quick look around the net shows I'm not the only one (and definitely not the first) who used a TRUE with the Xeon backplate. The mounting you mentioned where there's screw holes "to screw a heatsink down into", they're M3 screw holes, same as used by the TRUE. The Xeon backplate precisely matches the TRUE backplate!

Even though the incompatibility example wasn't accurate, your point is of course valid. Most coolers will NOT work with the Xeon 1366 backplate. See, for example, the Thermalright Venomous X mounting kit, which according to reviews is a great one BTW: it's evidently not compatible. So, bottom line:
It comes with both so you can choose what type of heatsink you want.

...and that is absolutely great!!

Wow, some crazy numbers on the power draw.

As far as cases go, I say a custom tech station is the best bet.  If I could ever afford one that is what I would do, anyway.

That's awesome how low the power draw is, I thought it would be a lot higher. Awesome job shamino & EVGA. Alright here is my stupid question for today, Do you think there will be a problem running a Gulftown "ES" & a 980 "Retail". Thank you for any info.

Is there any #s out for a simple Dual E5520 setup as far as OC's have been achieved? I will have this board, I just need to look at short term 'bang for buck'. Economy and all...
