Maniac i would say, "You sir are a living LEGEND".......However now i've realised from reading this superlative guide that you are, "The Lordbringer of EEEEEKKkkkkk!!" And i have noob installed on my brand new handcrafted rig, a load of PPPFfffttttt-ware.

So i'm gonna finish work and try and rectify the matter post-haste, one point...... a lot of new Mobo's these days come with all sorts of shell programmes do all these need to be closed down first?? In msconfig there is a diagnostic boot option can this be used rather than having to manually close all sorts of apps, or is this a "safe" mode boot??

Thanks for your guide....You are "LEGEND" .....Now i'm going to right royally "Bumpunch" all NVIDIA staff.

Thanks!

Just follow the guide for uninstalling the driver properly, and then reinstall it correctly
I really cannot comment about about any third party MB software or using MSCONFIG, without your exact specs and config details.
If you are really interested in such things, I suggest that you make a personal post in the correct fourm section with all your information and what the end result your are looking for
*PM me the link and I'd be happy to look it over and comment

Rivatuner is a superset of EVGA Precision. The RT author wrote Precision for EVGA. It is a utility that is not required to be installed. If you don't like it uninstall it.

As for coming and claiming it's a virus do you always make unsubstantiated claims? I hope with the research that you have put into this that your friends rarely listen to you for "tech" advice.

Is PhysX showing in Programs and features?
As noted in my guide, sometimes a "over install is needed"... but this should not be attempted unless you are 100% certain you have followed the correct uninstall and install steps.
A over-install, is where you install the same driver (and components) "over" itself, without uninstalling before doing it.
What driver are you using now, and what driver did you have installed before you put the latest one in?
It really sounds as if "something" else might be going on...
I would go thru the guide again and make sure you didnt overlook or miss a step

As for temps, your XPS 730 case will never be able to run a 590 card with good temps due to its design and restricted airflow issues... Its just not made to handle a card type that does not exhuast and dumps so much heat into the case itself. You will have to add some stronger fans and maybe even do some hole cutting and mount a fan(s) in the side panel....

I have an extra option in the Control Panel. I tried to post an image but it didn't work for this specific Forum as it does for all others.
Here's what the extra option says:
"Multi-GPU rendering mode" then a list of options:
1.NVIDIA recommended
2.Single GPU
3.Force alternate frame rendering 1
4.Force alternate frame rendering 2
I suppose this is there because I've just bought and am installing, (possibly reinstalling after thinking about your post and re-reading it a few times), a new EVGA GTX590 Classified.
Should I just leave it as "NVIDIA recommended" or some other option?
This is a very relevant, important, and must read instruction set you've posted that should be read by any Nvidia owner, new or old.
Thank you.

Greetings "Maniacvvv", Great informative guide, however my Nvidia
Control Panel does not have the "Power Management Mode" as seen in
"Nvidia_rivatuner_Inspector_GTX_570_SC_1280mb.avi"
on youtube "tinyurl.com/648xjy9".

Also while you are there please have look at "NFS_HP2_GTX_570_SC_1280mb.avi"
the last 10 seconds is enlightening and "NFS_HP2_GTS_8800_640mb_G80.avi"
to understand my problem, it also happens in "CnC3 Tiberian wars and Kane's Wrath"
and "Flight Simulator X", Resolution: 1024x768 @ 100hz, 32bit color; Onscreen info:
Temperature, GPU load, Fan load, GPU Speed, Shader Speed, Fan speed (570 only)
Memory Speed, Memory load

Your issues are created by your config bro, your totally CPU bound.

First off, completly REMOVE the 8800 GTS 640mb from the system (you do NOT have the CPU horsepower to run it along side a 570)

After removing the 8800, follow my Nvidia driver guide for uninstalling and installing, and put in Nvidia driver 285.38

Next up you need to to give more workload to your videocard
You have a  2,048-by-1,536 pixel monitor, by running it at 1024x756 your really making the CPU work harder and the videocard less (plus it looks terrible)
You need to set the screen in the Nvidia control panel to at least 1600x1200 or even 2048x1536
This will provide instantly better quality and improved performance

You will find that making the changes listed above will provide you a much better experience

I used to run a NF4 motherboard with a dual core AMD, back in the day

Greetings "Maniacvvv" if you had looked more closely at my signature "1572-ER or".

At least with that sli-type heatsink the north-bridge chipset temperature now averages 45ºC (113ºF)
in total silence, rather than a whiny 6000rpm fan on a 1cm (0.3937 inch) high heatsink idling at 75ºC (167ºF).

I will try the drivers, the larger screen sizes in 3D only and i wont be following your guide to the letter as won't
be installing Win7.

Re:Ultimate Nvidia Driver Guide for Uninstalling and Installing driversets 2011/10/19 05:43:22 (permalink)
I don't want to sound disrespectful to the hard work you put into it, but...

Imagine if a computer noob googled "how to install videocard drivers" and found their way here.

They would be confronted with a 30 page long document with 100's of steps and technical information.  Then, they would run away scared and go pay Best Buy to install it for them.

Installing drivers is a basic level task, right along with installing programs.  If we want more people to get into computers, we really need to simplify things, not overly complicate them.

I really think the first section of the guide needs to be a "here's how you can install/uninstall drivers in 99.5% of situations":
      1. Download latest drivers
      2. Run program
      3. If installing over old drivers, click "clean installation" to be safe
      4. Select component you want to install (most will just need the drivers -- the rest are optional.  PhysX is nice to have)
      5. Done.

I've been installing drivers like that for at least 10 years, even before the clean installation was built in to the program.  I'd always just install them over top of the old ones.  Never had a single problem or performance decrease in benchmarks.

The second part of the guide should be, "here's what to do if something rarely goes wrong".

You make some vaild points bro...

But the truth is 98% of novice users, buy a new videocard, rip open the package, put it in their computer and use the drivers they previously had installed or the ones on the driver disk. Then most end up going to Nvidia for a different driver and the use the recommended "Express Install"

Its only after they have problems or issues that they start looking for posts....
*and they would be lucky and their install would be flawless if they found this guide beforehand.

Even "experienced" users make mistakes....
You listed the following:
  1. Download latest drivers
     2. Run program
     3. If installing over old drivers, click "clean installation" to be safe
     4. Select component you want to install (most will just need the drivers -- the rest are optional.  PhysX is nice to have)
     5. Done.

Of course if you read the release notes at the start of my Guide, you can no longer do Step 3

Nvidia recommends that you uninstall your Graphics driver and Nvidia components in Programs and Features
-BEFORE- installing a newer (or older) driver set.
*Nvidia states that "installing over older drivers" is NOT recommended (even using the Clean Install option)and should not be done.

This is because Nvidia is using a "new" installer package (non-Microsoft) on some newer driversets.
This "new" installer does NOT have the permissions and fuctions the older Microsoft one did, and behaves very differently than the one Nvidia used for 10 years....
Also many of the "newer" driver versions have features or components that are different, or install/behave in a seperate manner than the previous version that proceeded it...
And because Nvidia has been changing some CORE driver components, by adding or expanding features....

As noted in my Guide, gone are the old ways of working with Nvidia driversets.

My guide was designed to go over as many of the the facts and issues as possible, that were known at the time it was written...
In order to help users (both novice and experienced) learn about the new Nvidia driversets...

And its not easy or quick... if you want to know all the facts.

Many users have terrible issues and problems with their Nvidia drivers...
This Guide is intented to help those users FIND and FIX those issues releated to Uninstalling and Installing Nvidia Driversets.

Is the clean installation option really gone?  I thought I just did it with the BF3 beta drivers.  Anyways, you have good points, but I still live by the motto of KISS -- keep it simple (stupid).  I'll keep installing my drivers overtop of themselves in a 2 minute process, just because my experience doing it that way has been positive.  When things go haywire I'll come crawling back here

I wish it was simple... would have saved a week of hard work.
No, the clean install is still there, but it doesnt work correctly with pre 260.xx driversets...

No crawling needed, whatever works is always best.
Thank you for your feedback

First off great thread, kudos. I'm going to keep the steps handy next time I do an install.

However I'm a bit concerned because since January I've been installing the updated drivers right on top of the older ones. Over writing them on top of each other. I guess I'm lucky but I've not encountered any issues thus far.

Does Nvidia explain this anywhere on thier site? I can't belive how long I've been doing it wrong and others who still are.
I've never checked off 'Windows start up' with Precision or MSI Afterburner if it was on at the time.

As a genuine Noobie I was grateful to find maniacvvv's post, but I'm afraid so far I still haven't been able to instal drivers for my new GTX550ti, even though I read every word and followed everything closely, including using DriverSweeper in Safe Mode (Windows 7 64 bit).  I still get "NVIDIA Installer failed".

I bought the new card to replace a Geforce 7300 because the new version of my video editing software (VegasPro 11) is able to use GPU accelerated rendering and video preview processing.

The supplied drivers (266.71) failed to instal so I found and downloaded 280.26 but same result.

I wrote to EVGA support and was told my registry was probably corrupt and in need of a clean, but they also said this might not work if the corruption is too much and I may have to reinstall Windows.

I have cleaned the Registry and even tried to reinstall W7, but was told there wasn't enough space on C Drive = it needs 11 Gb.    That's another issue I have to do something about - my main drive is 200Gb but only 39Gb were partitioned as C Drive, so it's always almost full.   I guess to repartition would mean installing everything from scratch, so I'm reluctant to do that unless it's the only option.

If, as I have twice, I replace my old 7300 graphics card, Windows finds it, instals drivers and it works perfectly, so my system can't be all that corrupt!
On the other hand when I install the GTX550, there is no Windows auto- detection of a new device, and for some reason only one of my two 24" monitors is detected, and that uses the default Windows VGA adaptor.
With the Geforce 7300 both Monitors are found and display even before the drivers are installed.

Anyway, it's very frustrating not being able to use the new card - I'm tempted to take it back and change for a different model, but if it's another NVIDIA device I fear that I'll get the same problem trying to instal drivers.

Any ideas?

Thanks
At the beginning of the thread there is a link to the Nvidia "Release Notes" explaining Uninstall and Install behavior and what is recommended...

It is installing "older" prior to the 260.xx family of drivers "over" the top of newer driversets that appears to cause the most problems... so if say you have 285.38 installed, you wouldnt want to install 240.xx
Luckly most users move forward with their drivers and rarely go back more that a few versions

If you Uninstall according to my guide with Precision or Afterburner set to "Start at Windows Boot", then upon rebooting after the uninstall into Windows without a driver will give an error.. Unckecking that setting will avoid it.

Thanks again

Welcome to the EVGA forums

Without more system config details its hard to know what to advise bro.... alot of things could be going on.

For sure, having your C drive partition full is a huge no-no
I really can suggest one "last ditch" effort, and if it fails.. then wipe the entire drive and start over. 30gigs may seem like enough (and it is for a fresh install) but updates and System Restore points will eat that up and overfill it... just what has happened to you.
Before a full reformat, I would suggest turning OFF System Restore. This will free up all the space taken up by Restore points.
It might work, it might not. But its worth trying before a reformat and OS reinstall.

There could be other factors going on besides your C drive issues.
You havent posted what CPU, Motherboard and Powersupply you are using. You could have a underpowered PSU or be needing a BIOS update on the motherboard....

Given all your issues, a full reformat is really what is needed if your C drive has run out of room and you have been messing with the registry....
