i usually skip the "README first" section and perform the installation after uninstalling the old drivers.

oh well, i better read that first before doing the actual thing.

thanks for the info.

Actually my guide is not outdated. When using device manager the nvidia uninstaller kicks in. Before reboot also uninstall physx, 3dvison, hd audio if you installed it. Then reboot into safe mode use driver sweeper reboot your gtg. If you follow my guide to a T your set

No disrespect bro, that was a great guide when it was written. But that was over a year ago with older driversets with no SP1.

Just because the Nvidia Uninstaller pops up, does NOT mean its working correctly, And thats why Nvidia has Mentioned this change in their Relese Notes. It does NOT properly work anymore, and they are blaming Microsoft.
* this issue is because Nvidia no longer uses a "device manager"compatible installer/uninstaller. Since your guide was released, Nvidia has now changed to a different installer/uninstaller and that "new" one DOES NOT work correctly when using Device Manager like the "old" one did when your guide was released.

As of the Release 260.xx Nvidia drivers, your guide is outdated due to changes in the behavior of Windows and the Nvidia driversets.

QUOTE from your Guide:
"Vista and Windows 7
1. Right click on Computer---->Properties
2. Click on Device Manager
3. Expand Dislpay Adapters
4. Right Mouse Button over the Video card Name
5. Select Uninstall, Click Delete the driver software for this Device
6. Do not reboot"
close Quote

As you can clearly see from the below Quote from the Nvidia Release Notes...

Uninstalling Drivers Using Device Manager is not Supported

Issue
On all supported versions of Microsoft Windows, uninstalling the NVIDIA driver using
the Windows Device Manager may not remove associated files or applications.
Explanation
Microsoft has confirmed that this behavior is by design. If you wish to uninstall the
NVIDIA driver, it is recommended that you do so using Add and Remove programs.

Well if you look at my post it was last edited on message edited by donta1979 on Sunday, May 29, 2011 12:01 PM.
Now lets talk about your it does not work anymore, it does actually, that is the whole point of driver sweeper, once you uninstal your drivers and reboot into safe mode driver sweeper will remove anything else left. Just an FYI still works perfectly fine nor is it out dated. Yes it could use a few fine tweaks since people do the roll back drivers or system restores that I have though the years in pms, emails, and on post have been fully against it... ask rjohnson have busted him a few times for it... But yeah once again its not outdated still works perfectly is not multiple post long. Less is more btw

Yes, the BFBC2 guide is for BFBC2

The settings in screenshot I posted in this thread is how I have been setting up my control panel for years (although I DO use x16AF forced), and was done to help novice users have a starting point for a new driver install. I have a very extensive software collection installed and do alot more than just play games, and I have found the settings I listed to be extremely stable and provide the best quality and performance.
Whats the point of having a brand new driver install if you leave the NVCP at defaults or go into the 3d settings panel and mess it up by using incorrect settings?

As suggested in my BFBC2 guide, the changes should be made in the "Global settings" panel.

hey maniac great guide. helped me fix all the issues with my 590. A quick question about max performance mode though. When I have it activated just browsing youtube will bump my temps up to 55c+. when gaming it stays in the 70-80c range. Is this normal?

This is normal after Nvidia changed the clock behavior, Nvidia is aware that people dont like it at all (including myself) and have announced they plan on putting it back that way it was, possibly in the next driver release... you can cetainly put it back to "Adaptive", but until the driver is patched its still going to spike all over.

And thanks

It will be up tonight...

Its not going to contain any magical fixes or suprises, just setting properly up for a Driversweep in safe mode or a OS reinstall (with some helpful details, on to avoid giving yourself the same problem all over again. Which I sadly see too much of).

I have been using this guide, but I am running into trouble with uninstalling the drivers:

I boot into Safe Mode, because for some reason Windows keeps automatically installing the drivers for my GTX 570. While I was about to run Driver Sweeper...it installed MORE Nvidia drivers. I now have Driver version 270.61. I know this is probably the reason for my computer problems (just bought the GTX 570, have a i5-750, and games like Borderlands and Bioshock 2 run badly).

Is there a way I can skip this step by setting me up as the Admin for Windows 7, or a way I can prevent Windows from automatically detecting my video card and then installing drivers for it?

First on the list for getting setup for a Nvidia Driver uninstall/install, is getting Windows update properly configured.
For many users, Windows Update is one of the Major issues for causing driver problems. Many users leave Windows Update in its default install state. This can lead to Windows deciding to do a Nvidia driver install when a new version is WHQL, or trying to put in a Nvidia driver when the OS reboots without one during the uninstall process. Either of which can lead to all kinds of problems and issues, if you didnt catch (or notice) Windows when it performed such actions..
To setup Windows Update correctly, open the Control Panel and choose Windows Update.
On the left hand side, is a option to "change settings", and thats what we want to do (shown below)

Now, as shown in the screenshot below, pick the setting off the flyout for Update Settings, we want to choose...
-->"check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them"

Now, click the "OK" button on the bottom of the page to save the change. Your done!
*You have just told Windows Update that it can check for Updates online, but from now on you will get a balloon notice that when clicked will show you what updates are available. You will now have to give Windows permission to download and install any Updates, and you may pick and choose which ones to install.
**It is recommended that you NEVER allow Windows Update to download or install any Display driver Updates.
***Upon booting without a driver, Windows should -only- Detect and then install a "Standard VGA Adaptor" this is NOT a driver.

Next up, we need to make sure that you are logged in with the correct Admin privileges.
This did not appear to be a major issue in the past, but I have recently noticed users on "secondary" accounts or those users who installed Windows without using a "password" on thier Admin user account, reporting driver uninstall and install issues.
*It is VERY Important that the user account you are using when working with Nvidia Driversets...
--> is the PRIMARY user account with FULL ADMIN Privileges.
**(If you do NOT login to Windows using a password on the primary account, please check the last section of this Guide)

Great guide maniac! Learned a lot from it. One suggestion, how about a "mini-guide" at the bottom that just gives you the steps without all the explanation. Sort of a checklist so to speak. Just a thought. Keep up the good work!

Re:Nvidia Drivers: a Users Guide for 200, 400 and 500 series cards 2011/08/20 19:16:19 (permalink)
I have to say the guide makes some good points, but it is bloated and poorly organized! If someone wants your life story they will ask for it

The following is not directed toward the guide, but toward what some people recommended!

Driver Sweeper is not needed! It is never needed.

1. Make sure no programs are running...
2. Un-install any current NVIDIA or ATI drivers (Restart after each un-install, do not un-install more than 1 driver/program without restarting (Better safe than sorry)).
3. Double check windows device manage to make sure no NVIDIA or ATI drivers are install (You want to see the generic windows driver)
4. Option! Delete the NVIDIA / ATI driver folder (Depending on the driver version you may lose some settings and have to reconfigure some setting for programs that you manually setted (most people do not have to worry about this)
5. Install new drivers (Do not install Audio or 3D drivers unless you are intending to use them (Those drivers can always be install when needed (Ready to use)).
6, Restart the PC and check Windows Device Manager to validate that the proper driver is installed (also, check NVIDIA control panel).

I perform the above (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) and have never had a problem with installing or re-installing or updating a driver. Also, never needed a program like Driver Sweeper, never!

I didnt write this guide for people who are not having problems or issues with their Nvidia Driver installs....
Many users are inexperienced and even some expert users are not aware of some of these changes

Going into detail, helps people who want to learn and makes the guide a good reference.

Great guide, buddy. Don't listen to the people who say it's too long, bloated, or otherwise. For new forum members that come here with problems, this guide will be just what they are looking for. It will also make troubleshooting easier on the veteran members that are always helping the newbies. They will be able to link them to this guide first, and may be able to rule out some issues with one single link.

Anyway, I, personally, have always used the Driver Sweeper method, and never ran into issues. I've also always installed HD Audio thinking it was something I needed, and never had a problem with that either. That being said, new software/drivers require new uninstall/install methods so I'm very thankful for your guide. it's actually much easier than what I was doing before, so if I can prevent any possible issues by using the newer method I'm all for it.

On a side note, your guide instructs to remove each Nvidia program from the Programs and Features list (HD Audio, Nvidia Update, PhysX, etc.). You also say to remove each one, disregarding any restart prompt, and leave the driver until last. Well, I started with HD Audio, it was removed fine. Next I went to Nvidia Update, and that removed fine, but I had to cancel the restart prompt. Next I went to PhysX, which is where I hit a brick wall. It told me that I could not remove PhysX until I restarted my machine.

What I ended up doing was restarting the system, then went back into the Programs and Features and finished uninstalling PhysX and then finally the driver, and restarting again.

Thank you for the feedback, I havent run into that issue before...
This is probably because I only install the Graphics driver and PhysX...
I will have to do some full installs and test. Depending on the results I may have to edit the guide alittle bit.

Again, thanks for the nice comments and thank you for your feedback

Nice catch bro

Thanks user jdookie for pointing this issue out

-->I have edited my guide on post #3 to reflect this<--

EDIT*Important note: If while uninstalling Nvidia display components, the system asks for a RESTART after uninstalling any component (except the Graphics Display) and it wont let you proceed when choosing "restart later", then its OK go ahead and restart and pick up in the Control Panel/Programs and Features where you left off. (thanks to user jdookie for pointing this issue out)
