ooh, never thought about leaving HT on...in the habit of having it off for LLR.  I'll have to play around and see...or just wait for you to give your report as you have more cpu's to play with than I do =P.

Well Maybe I read it wrong but with Multi-Thread I do not see why not, it is only a test.
The Time did drop from 19 hours to go to 12 hours to go.

I did not do this on my T630 Server it has HT Off.

I started one of my hex with 6 cores 1 thread.Tomorrow I'll turn HT on and do 12 cores to 1 thread.
It may do better, it may do worse.

3930k 6-core task took 6.7 hrs.
Trying 8-core next.

Running 2 tasks, 8-core on E5-2670, estimated 10hrs in BOINC.

Cores or Thread?
Is HT Off or On?
3930k 6-? task took 6.7 hrs. Might want to stay at 6 on this CPU
Trying 8-Threads I am seeing problems

Threads, sorry.

3930k @ 4.4GHz.  I limited boinc to 50% with HT on and ran 6 threads.
Dual E5-2670 system with 2 x 8 thread tasks running along with POGS (HT also on) and folding on GPU (left 2 threads free for GPU).

I am going to change i7-3970X down to only 6 Threads once this current task has completed.
I has crashed 3 times now, my last bump of the vCore was to 1.390 @4300 and do not want to go any higher on the vCore.
Good thing is it starts back up, and my Folding Tasks are now done so only a hour or so left.

Yeah, me too.  I just checked on it and BOINC still said 6 threads but CPU utilization was all over...didn't look right.
Put BOINC back to 50%, 6 threads and it is running 6 threads at 100% and the others are idle.

On the E5-2670s: one task shows about 10 hrs but when I started a second task, the time started going up.
Probably stick with 1 x 8 thread task since I am running other stuff along side.

just noticed this event last night, i now have my i7-960 (7 days per task:p) and 6800k working away:) the 6800k was running >80C degrees with HT on and overclocked, but back down to mid 50's at stock.  is there a benefit to turning HT off other than temperature?

PrimeGrid LLR tasks are recommended to run with HT off for best performance.  (or you can set BOINC to 50% CPU usage for similar results)
I'm sure others will have a more in-depth explanation to offer.

The other part is monitoring for temp and any errors due to overclocking (stability is very important with PG) but I see you already are on top of that.

That may change with multithread that some of us are testing out.
So far running well on some of my rigs.
I think running a Single Task with HT on based on the number of Cores you have, at least that is what I am seeing.

^^+1^^
I re-read bill1024 post #38 and reset my machines as follows, 2500k, 4 core no ht available running single 4 core wu. 2600k, 4 core 8 thread running 1 6 core wu. And another 2600k running 2x 4 core wu's. Task manager on the 3 rigs looks as it should, temps are high 40 to low 50's on air in the folding/crunching cave. Boinc still predicts long times but I can see them going down quicker. Need to finish some for comparison. I am going to switch to 8 core wu's on the 1st 2600k when I can. Obviously I had to enable ht on the 2 2600k's and there is no downside that I can see yet. (They may error but I doubt it.) I feel I'm back helping the team now compared to running 1 or 2, 35 hour wu's per rig.

Thanks bill

meh, I added the app_config.xml file to my C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.primegrid.com folder, copied the short script for 6 threads, shut down BOINC (even restarted), but it's still running 6 separate tasks...
am I missing something?

Did you Read the Config in the Client Tool before you exit the BOINC Client Tool?
Options - Read Config Files
Do this AFTER you add the File and before you exit the BOINC Client Tool.

If so, yeah, I tried that, but didn't seem to do anything. Thx tho, let me try again.

Exit the Client and then restart your PC
Or wait a minute or two after you EXIT, the X in the upper Right Corner is not the same as EXIT.

:) Yip, File > Exit BOINC is being used. Restarted. My event log says:cc_config.xl not found - using defaults.
Doesn't seem to be picking up the app_config.xml

gahhh... still no love from BOINC. Still running 6 tasks, and nothing in event log to suggest it's picking it up.

<edit> Problem solved, when I created it in Notepad, I saved it as Text Document, not All Files. apparently i didn't fail at copy and pasting, but saving... Heh, a solid waste of an hour:) Thanks for helping me troubleshoot bcavnaugh
Happily that went a lot smoother with VI in linux.

We are slowly reeling in Poland, hope we can overtake them for the 5th place spot.

It was warm today, tomorrow will be the same, then cooler temps will be rolling in.
I had to run the A/C a little bit, sitting watching TV and sweat dripping down my face is a no no.
Cool enough out now to close the computer room door and a box fan in the window.
