I have 1 of my dual e5-2670 16 cores doing 4 tasks with 4 cores each: I found the 4 tasks are running closer to each other time wise.
Sixteen tasks running had a good difference in % done in the same run time. Not sure why, L3 cache on the CPU maybe.
I read with these tasks, you want one thread per 10mb of cache, my e5-2670 have 20mb, so 2 tasks should be better than the 4 I am at now
When they are done I am going to try 2 tasks with 8 cores each.
My hex core sandy and Ivybridge will try 1 task with 6 cores.
Wish I knew of this multitasking a while ago, caught me by surprise.

Don't forget This project has a 35% long job credit bonus and a 10% conjecture credit bonus.

yodap
Anyone notice Scott Brown joined a team.
Olddanit and planetclown are on the board as of this post.

I though Brown was in at Team? His Team!
WOW! my first task will not be done for another 6 days.
yodap is on the page as well now

Well the RYZEN 7 1800X is not well liked on PrimeGrid (Completed, marked as invalid)

Scott Brown left his old team last challenge of last year. He went to A.T.P.
Scot said that his old team was kind of dead on his old Duke team, and liked the guys at A.T.P. so he joined them. Pretty much how I read what he said.
That is a lot of crunching CPU power on that team now. More than we are able to produce I believe
We will see how well they do come the next GPU challenge.
I don't think it matters, if I remember we only beat A.T.P. in GPU challenges and only once or twice.
It makes no difference to me, I will still do the PG challenges and try to keep 5th place ours!!

My e5-1650-i73939k and my Ivvybridge are doing well with multithread 6 cores 1 task They have 12mb L3 cache
So are the dual e5-2670 doing 2 tasks 8 cores per task. They have 20mb L3 cache,

EDIT:
Here is the thread with the multithread announcement and some testing.

Yes I am, it makes a big difference. You can add the app_config file even if you have already started sungle thread tasks.
Just read the files, best way is to exit BOINC and end all tasks and restart BOINC, then I had 2 tasks running, not 16
And the others that were started were waiting to run with 8 cores so no time was really lost.
It starts with 8 threads right where it left off running with one.

Here is my app_config for my dual 8 core e5-2570
I use the number 8 so I run 2 tasks with 8 cores to use all 16 cores.

Just change all the the number 8s to how many cores you want to use per task

My hexcore 3930K I use the number 6

if you have a quad core use the number 4 to run 1 task with 4 cores.

<app_config>
   <app>
      <name>llrPSP</name>
      <fraction_done_exact/>
    </app>
   <app_version>
       <app_name>llrPSP</app_name>
       <cmdline>-t 8</cmdline>
       <avg_ncpus>8</avg_ncpus>

Re: Mathematics Awareness Month Challenge April 7th 12:00:00 UTC until April 22nd 12:00:00 2017/04/09 16:23:55 (permalink)
You want to try to keep it at or under 1 task per 10mb of L3 cache
So my 20mb cache e5-2670 can do 2 tasks and keep the task in L3 and not have to access off die memory. That would be 4 tasks 4 cores or 2 with 8 cores.
My 3930K have 12mb of L3 so it is best to do 1 task with 6 cores.
I guess what I understand this is for the large LLR like PSP and SOB not

With the app_config files I posted you can change the name of the task to the name of whatever it is you're tuning
Here is the list of PG tasks

llrTPS (SGS)
llrWOO
llrCUL
llrCUL
llrPSP
pps_sr2sieve
llrPPS
ap26
llrSOB
trp_sr2sieve
llrTRP
genefer (GFN 21)
genefer_wr (GFN 22)
llrPPSE
llrSR5
llrESP
llrMEGA (PPS-MEGA)
genefer15
genefer16
genefer17low
genefer17mega
genefer18
genefer19
genefer20
gcw_sieve
llrGCW (GCW-LLR, not yet running)

So with HT off I have 26 Cores to setup, I now have 25 in progress ATM with 6 Days to 8 Days left
Would the below work and would run 3 Tasks at once?

Where it was going to take my e5-2670 5 or more days or more to do 16 tasks. (Some were way faster than others too.)
I now pump out 2 tasks every 7.2 hours
7.2 x 8 = 57.6 hours to do 16 tasks

Nexgen cowboy said with the same system,  "I removed my machines from this..    My task were 7-10 days...  "

Cowboy if you're reading this try it with the app_config file
If you need help with how to make the file and where it goes many here can help.

I am sorry guys, I dropped the ball on this. I did not see the launch of this multithread.
Been busy with the other challenges and home/family stuff.

1 processor or two? and how much L3 cache per processor?
If you have 26 cores and do 3 tasks with 8= 24 cores. The other 2 cores will download a task each. ( I Believe, not 100% sure.)
You would want to have 30mb total of L3 cache, or very fast system ram to make up for the task not staying in cach
Maybe do 2 tasks with 12 processors and set the BOINC to only use 99% of CPUs so a core or two will not run a single thread????
May have to do some testing Bill.

Now to see if it reduces the time to complete and not miss my deadlines.
I also a RNA task that going on 22 Days of run time, I do not want to drop or dump this guy.

I have one 16 core with HT on 32 theads doing 2 Tasks with 16 threads each
Will see how that works out!!

Maybe too many threads waiting for other threads to catch up to each other?? How well it scales.

Funny,
I have BOINC Set to 96% Giving me 26 of the 28 Cores and RNA running with no single Cores running PG.

PS This is on my T630 with 2 Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 2.4GHz,3 5M Cache,9.60GT/s QPI,Turbo,HT ,14C/28T CPUs

All threads are at 100% load. It is finishing up already started tasks, I can see it is going much faster.
I can not tell as of yet what it would of been from a fresh start.

I guess I can get a TPF of the started work and compare it to new running TPF

E5-2680v4 Level 3 cache size35 MB. That processor has 35mb of L3 cach, so you should be able to do 3 tasks per CPU. Nice!

Couple things I do want to mention.
When you look at your tasks and you're done, even if you min, the page, click projects or notices.
Do not leave it on tasks, it eats CPU time keeping all those numbers up to date.

Also turn off windows update in services and disable the service, at least until this is done.
Close all the stuff that starts with windows that you're not using.
These things use memory and CPU that make a difference on these large tasks.

Good luck, I am out of here for a while. Have fun.

I did have a scare when Suspended PrimeGrid in the BOINC Client to make the change the Client Software Died.
It was only the Client Software that went away and after I started it back up all was still running.

You can Bill, I do not think you have to though.

I should say this, I had the client read the app_config file and it went to the multitasking setting I set it for.
BUT when I looked at windows task mgr performance, only half the threads were loaded 100%
I fixed this by exiting BOINC and restarting BOINC, then every thread/core was at 100% load.
I have BOINC client set to end tasks when I exit BOINC

Just double check task mgr and make sure your cores are loaded they way they should be.

My 3930K at 4,2ghz memory at 2133 6 cores doing one task I am at 80% in 5 hours even.
MY i5-4570 3.2ghz is at 55% in 5hr36min 4threads one task. 10 hours a task or 40 to do 4.
I guess that is ok memory is 1600. CPU speed and memory speed play a big roll.

I am tempted to fire up my x5660 and an AMD server, but it is just too warm and I am trying to spread out my electric usage.
So many challenges going on.
I wonder how well they would do.
Maybe one cycle with 24 AMD cores doing one task or 2 with 12. mmmmm

One more thing! Sorry.
When you first set it up to use 6,8 or how ever many, it will down load a bunch of extra tasks that will just sit there.
You can go ahead and delete them, in BOINC it does not hurt to delete tasks, they get resent right away.
Just do not delete the ones you already started.

ATM I have a Lot Of Computer Power Going for the next few days due to a Cold spell.
But then we get to warm in the daytime so I have run at nighttime until I get my A/C Going for this year.
I think I am doing a little good over on formula-boinc this year for some of the Odd BOINC Projects I started this year.
Leiden Classical is what I will try and run more of after I get done testing out BOINC CPU Projects on my RYZEN 7 1800X CPU or New Horizons

We have another sprint in a few days.

I just found a few good deals on the forums for parts,  xfx/seasonic 1050G PSU, and 4 sticks of Corsair Vengeance ram, and ordered a refurb hydro series 115i AIO
Maybe I'll get another Asus x79Ws e5-1650 going this week
