Heya

K I think its time for me to do it. I'm sick and tired of that little piece of %£"%"£ being the loudest fan in my case out of all 15 fans I got there. Is there any replacement fan I could use ? Or does any1 make water block for it?

I remember reading on this forum that some1 was making blocks for it...

Thanks, bye.

    nateman_doo makes them. Here's his thread http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=943648
I personally own a set of them for my SR-2, and let me say they are awesome. His attention to detail is awesome and his product is extremely nice. Just PM him and he'll get back to you.

Wicked thanks ! So i guess the only way to get quiet out of this is to go water then right?

Are there any 3-5 bay (dvd one) water pumps and so on that I could install inside my xigmatec elysium? I never used water... I'd like to make it as compact as possible...

    Thanks, bye.

Will water be even good option for me since I run 24/7 at 100% cpu ? Its workstation/render farm...

You can control that fan from bios, have you tried raising the values, say the c state where it kicks the fan up?

No, I hear that this fan should go as fast as It can when I oc my xeons from 2.4 ghz to 3.8... Or my chipset will burn...

    Which  jfan controlls it ?

    Thanks, bye.

    Hi!
I had a BigWater back in the day... they work, but for very small loops, once I added a GPU block the flow sucked...

Anyway, what I'd recommend if you want the pump to sit in a bay, is to get a 655 pump and one of those reservoirs that supports 1-2 pumps directly connected into it, they take up two bays I think. Check on Koolance.com, there are other brands but I'm not sure if EK has one too :)

    Heya

Wow I dont even know what I'm looking at there =D

In any case I will only use it to cool down the Chipset. Nothing more.

Is water relialable to run 24/7 ?

You can build a loop with or without a reservoir, when it's reservoir-less you need a T line to pour water into the system. In the case of the reservoir, you open it, pour water in there and cap it once the system is "full". Usually reservoirs are put apart from the pump, connected by tubing, but someone thought it'd save space if the pump connected directly to the reservoir. So instead of buying a pump and a "body" for it (which are prettier and allow you to use G1/4 fittings), you use a reservoir with the body for the pump directly built in.

Following that trend, I think there are even some radiators now with pumps in them haha :).

Yeah you can run it 24/7 but always do a leak test with the system off, for 24h is a good suggestion. You'll need a little maintenance though, like changing the water every 6 months or so, also using antimicrobial in drops or with a silver coil/plug.

BTW the PMP-450 is the same as the MCP-655 pump, I think PMP-400 is MCP-355 :)

I run my rig 24/7 except when I'm away for longer than 2 days or rebooting. A Pump is no different than a fan is terms if it stopped working.
So if you want silence, pick up a set of blocks from Nate, get a Pump/Reservoir, and a 240mm Radiator designed for silent operation and you should be good.
Leak testing is good, but honestly, 24 hours is way to long I think. I used to test for 6 hours, I don't even test anymore. I have built over half a dozen loops and have only had one leak. That was because I didn't get a fitting screwed in all the way and I missed it when I went over everything before powering it up. So as long as you are careful, you should have zero issues.

There are ways to watch the chipset temps. mine never got over 50c at 3.8, but my fan was I think at 80%, the default if that what it is.
The cooler the better, but I'm pretty sure its good to about 70c without any problems.
Personally I would just lower the fan speed to 70, 60, 50% and test at each to see how its does on temps at full load.
Doesn't cost anything to try and could get the sound level down to where you want it without extreme water or to high temps.
I'd shoot for a 60c temp on the chipset if I wanted a quiter system, so reduce fan to what ever can keep it in that range.

Whatever you decide, I am here to help.  There are other options.  Since I have all the CAD designs required to build an SR2 block, I could look into an air cooling option if you want.  Not sure if it will be any quieter, but why not be the first to try that option.

Check out my P67/Z68 block.  A few of those fans I used on that block could fit on my copper block outline.  More fans running at a slower speed might be quieter then the one fan on the stock heatsink.  Its up to you.  There is 1/2" thick in total that we can play around with.  a 1/8" thick copper plate with some fans/fins/holes will be better then the stock cooler.

I have decided to go with air cooling to avoid the high cost of the liquid cooling. Big heatsinks on CPU's can perform more than enough, another heatsink on VGA does the job. My CPU heatsink perform very well and do not cost more than a CPU water block. With liquid cooling, one still has to buy radiators, pumps, reservoir, tubes and other necessary parts.
The only problematic part with air cooling is the motherboard chipsets as mentioned here. There are four chipsets under that large yet flat heatsink. Thermalright has various chopsets cooler that are made off-centered. These tall heatsinks that are needed for efficient cooling may still interfere with the installed cards; in particular if installed on the two chips that are very close to the PCI-E slots.

    Heya

Right, thanks all for help ! I had some time to think about it and I think I would try air. I dont think that we need a lot of tweaking to get it done - but then I'm no1 to know for sure.

In any case I mock up quick concept in max. Have a look do u guys think that could work ? We would keep the old radiator design as it is in case of fan and so on (I should have cut out the heat pipes from fan area) so that we will have old fan, and old top sticker screw on top of it... The only addition is to add extra heat pipes for each chip like CPU works so that it will go out to a bigger radiator that will have 80/95mm fan thin/fat no idea cooling down the components... Then the old fan could work at 50% or so and the cooling would be shared between 2 fans...

Btw how can I check chipset temperatures?

    Thanks !

Who is going to make that chipset heatsink? I would have bought one if there was available though I don't see any use for the little fan to still running.

Sorry for the delay, I forgot to subscribe to the post.

My plan would be to keep it simple, and use the same template cutout that I already have for my waterblock.  Then, To use multiple fans like here in this thread:
    http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=887470

Not sure how many fans to use (could fit probably 4 easily), but this will still be superior to the factory heatsink.  The factory heatsink is not pure copper.  In fact I don't remember any part of it being copper, but its been a while since I touched the factory heatsink.

The only question, is to make a thin plate like the P67 block with slots around the chip, or to make the entire plate with lots of fins.  It is entirely up to you, but it still looks like a fun project.  The thin plate with the slots cutout (like P67 block) will be less expensive, but the thicker plate with more fins might perform better.  Hard to say at this point.

Any updates on this?  I will be doing a batch of SR2 blocks in the not to distant future, so my machine will be geared up to make them.  If you want to try something out, let me know since I am slowly ordering raw materials for them.

    Heya

I think it we would need to discuss it a bit more in private but sign me in for it - any idea on price +/-?

As long as it has good performance and I cant hear it I'm up for it :)

The performance will be much better then the stock heatsink, but I can't say how noisy it will be.  I was thinking to use multiple fans just for performance, but I guess you can make it as quiet as you want by removing fans.

There are many options since your the only owner of this block.  If on only have 1 video card that I can put a larger fan on it, but if you plan on occupying all the slots then small 40mm fans need to be used.
I can put the fins in a specific orientation if you want to place a 120mm fan on the side of your board to cool the block.  Also, there is watercooling too ;)

    Heya

I will use more than 1 GPU - im already using 2... So it has to work with multiple GPU...

I dont want to use waterblock...

At the end of the day do you think there is a good solution for air colling that I can use here or only big/noisy?

This block will do what you ask it to, just takes putting our heads together on how to arrange the fins, and fan(s)

I have my chipset fan making a lot of noise, and I learned it is a sign that it is worn out and it soon is going to fail.
I would like to know if there is a replacement unit available somewhere, even if it's not the original one but one that fits in.

    Dual xeon 5650
    48gb G-skill ripjaws 1600 cl9
    LianLi PC-P80 case
    GTX 780 6gb
    GTX 970
    Cooler Master Gold 1000w
