Ugh... I thought the hotfix did it for me but I got two tdr crash.  It's not as often as before but it's still around.

I am still testing the hotfix and have a few questions for you :)

In which browser? and if so, were you playing a video or just browsing? Was it a black screen for a few seconds and then successful recover or BSOD/sudden reboot?
Thanks!

Using Chrome browser with HW acceleration on.  Just watching a YouTube video.  It's not as bad like before where the screen freezes for 3 secs and black screen.  Now it's more like a quick black screen flash and recover but sometimes it crashes the YT video.

Same issue: 3080ftw3 ultra black screen from desktop or web browsing. Seems to be most common when watching youtube videos. Latest Nvidia Driver, latest EVGA vbios.

monitor1 is a LG GN950-B 4k120 on DisplayPort(DSC)
monitor2 is an old IPS 1080p/60
Both go black. EvenViewer shows the Driver nvlddmkm  stopped responding and then recovered.

Kinda frustrating that a $900 vid card and a $800 monitor and I can't go a single day without it blackscreening.

Thanks for the info. As for myself I didn't have any crashes so far with both the hotfix and the fresh 461.72 driver that came out today, but still I will wait and test some more until I can be certain it's fixed for good.

By the latest driver do you mean the hotfix 461.51 or the new 461.72 that came out today or do you actually mean 461.40? because the 461.40 was the worst driver regarding this issue for me.

Just started having (or at least noticing) this Black Screen driver freeze and reset this week.  Updated to 461.40 yesterday but am downloading 461.51 now.  Firefox ESR with hardware acceleration.  Just disabled HW acceleration and set tdrdelay to 10.  I'm on LTSC 1809 looks like I got updates for removal of flash player and update .NET framework on 2/21/21, just detected and ran a cumulative update preview.  Installing 461.51 now.

I was using the hotfix when I made the post. I updated to .72 yesterday evening. I try to wait a few days before updating just in case massive issues are found. I was using Firefox latest release all settings default. Issues were most common when playing a video on Social Media, Youtube, etc. I'll update if .72 reduces the issue.
The black screens result in three event viewer Errors:
1) nvlddmkm, \device\video3, Graphics Exception: Class 0xe00d Subchannel 0x0 Mismatch
2) nvlddmkm, \device\video3, Graphics Exception: ESR 0x4041b0=0xe00d
3) nvlddmkm, \device\video3, Graphics Exception: ESR 0x404000=0x80000002
Then a Event Warning: "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

Here is NVIDIA response to this issue right now:

Delete the CEF cache folder under the location
Please press windows key and R. this will open the run window
Copy and paste the below:
%LocalAppData%\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA GeForce Experience
DELETE : only CEF cache folder

And then press windows key + R
Type appwiz.cpl
uninstall Geforce experience only
And then reinstall the geforce experience:

I request you to place the card in debug mode and check if this works.

, which will downclock any factory overclocked graphics card to Nvidia reference clock speeds
After that, uninstall the MSi after burner Or any Clocking/ tweaking softwares from the system and check if this works

I had to re-download it from their website. Either way this fix doesn't work.

Have been fine for the last few days on 461.51, have had Firefox hardware accel on.  Tdrdelay 10 seems to cause a Windows softlock, need to log out to clear it.

How hard was it to get the RMA because of this issue? I'm probably going to end up RMAing mine soon. I was hoping it would be an issue with the drivers :-/

Nvidia confirmed that the Driver 461.72 did resolve this issue. I updated to this driver and it actually made the problem worse for me.
After some troubleshooting it turns out that the Version 1802 BIOS for ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E Gaming update combined with Driver 461.72 did fix the problem (knock on wood).

I've since changed my power performance mode to 'Normal' and have been stress testing by running tons of stream/video windows in chrome and have had no issues.

Re: RTX 3080/3090 Black screen possible solution 2021/03/14 17:06:01 (permalink)
I am honestly shocked this hasn't been fixed yet.

OK I got the black screen and random "non-sudden" reboots with a 3090 and the latest drivers multiple times in the last two weeks while watching movies in MPC HC, VLC, Youtube, or anything browser related involving hardware acceleration (both Chrome and Firefox) but it's mostly while watching videos. The random reboots happen like 1 minute after the crash and they are technically silent BSOD (0x0133 watchdog violation) to write the memory dump. Sometimes the crashes are just black screens for a few seconds and then come back with a paused, distorted video (like most are experiencing in this topic). I had a TUF 3090 a few months ago and used to have the exact same issues with it so it can't be my current Strix 3090.

And I will say this again, I never had any issue with any heavy gaming in all these months.

The only way this can be fixed is if NVIDIA cared a bit more about their broken drivers and their compatibility with the 3000 series. I am giving up contacting them about this, I have been exchanging emails and chatting with them regarding this for months with all kinds of reports and memory dumps and it looks like they really can't fix this issue. Now I can't watch a single movie or browse for a few hours without the GPU driver crashing on me.

Back to my 1080 Ti which is working perfectly fine on everything even with the latest drivers.

My specs for reference:

9900K @ stock
Asus Maximus X Hero Z370
Kingston 32GB Predator 3000 CL15 XMP on
3090 Strix
43" LG 4k monitor and ASUS 1080p 144hz
Seasonic X-1250w XM2

Are you on the latest version of BIOS? ASUS improved stability on all of their motherboards around NOV-DEC 2020. These updates for sure resolved many issues for 30 series cards.

Sorry I wanted to mention this in the specs but forgot, ye I got the latest BIOS dated 3nov2020 with version 2503 for my motherboard.

Edit: @itst0m You could be right, I did a bit of research on ASUS bioses and the date they are released and for which mobos, looks like any ASUS bios dated late Nov/early Dec 2020 will have stability fixes, and that includes stability for the RTX 3000 series. Unfortunately it seems like my motherboard is out of support and no new bioses are being made for it.

What are your system specs? Do you also have an ASUS motherboard and if so did you try the latest BIOS update as suggested by itst0m?
I really want more confirmation that the latest ASUS bios updates indeed fixes this issue so I can upgrade my mobo as this issue is driving me nuts.

Nope. I’ve seen the issue on my old Gigabyte Z170 and my Current MSI Z490. I’m on the latest BIOS for my Z490. I contacted Nvidia and they suggested I tried debug mode, but to me that’s not a long term fix to the problem. MSI told me to reseat the card and if that didn’t work I could RMA it. The issue for me is quite intermittent and I haven’t been able to replicate the issue reliably. My system will run fine for days (by which I mean I am artificially looping YouTube for hours on end and also stress testing with 3D Mark) and then BAM black screen/BSOD (Only happened in a low load situation while browsing so far). I don’t think an RMA will fix the issue since so many other people are having it.

Thank you for the info. I trust itst0m but maybe the latest BIOS update for him changed some ram timings or some other values that fixed the issue for him somehow. Or maybe it's just a fluke and he thinks it's the BIOS update that fixed it for him. For example this guy here says a Windows update fixed the issue for him: https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/3198164
This thing is so random. It's all speculation at this point but that's what I think.

And yah, I remember people from other forums who did an RMA and still had the same issue with new card.

Yeah, I’m still getting this issue on my MSI 3080. Crashes only while browsing, haven’t ever seen it in games.

Yeah it’s random enough to the point where every thing I do appears to fix it. I haven’t thought of a way to reliably replicate it. RMAing the card seems pointless since if I can’t replicate the issue I don’t imagine the manufacturer will either. I had Edge automatically refreshing every 2 minutes last night and it was fine, so maybe I fixed it with yesterday’s driver? Impossible to say.

I wouldn't say I found a way but the fastest way I found to replicate it is to download any MKV 4K video from YouTube and play it with MPC HC and madVR renderer and keeping it on repeat until you crash, both MPC and madVR renderer comes by default with K-Lite Mega codec pack. Doing that you will most likely get a black screen, reboot and/or a BSOD within 30 mins - 1 hour, can take a few hours if you're so unlucky. :P

Here's a good video for testing on MPC HC: https://drive.google.com/...LyVFB6j50gazjCIdv/view

I looped that video with that player and renderer for 4 hours and didn’t have a dropout or crash. I even checked event viewer and saw nothing. I updated windows and installed the new driver last night so maybe that did something (though I doubt it). Do you have anything else running in the background that might effect the GPU load?

Also are there specific render settings your using for the video playback?

hmm interesting, hopefully the new driver and the new Win update did something but I would give it at least two weeks to make sure. :D
As for video playback, I don't change any settings, all madVR and MPC HC settings are on default for me, the only thing I change sometimes is the brightness in madVR but that shouldn't affect anything. Also make sure the video is playing in full screen mode and that you don't have VSync turned on in global Nvidia CP settings.

The other way I use to replicate the crash is exactly like you did/do, I put YouTube on a 4K playlist (Linus playlist since most of his vids are 4K) and leave it running over night. I then check Event Viewer and find like two or three "Nvidia stopped responding" crashes has occurred.

Nothing at all.

Out of curiosity what PSUs are people using? I’m on an EVGA G+ 750W.

I got a Seasonic 1250W XM2

Edit: Just got another "1 minute of complete system freeze" then my system rebooted, that was while I was playing a very light load game (was testing some WADS with GZDoom), this never happened while playing a heavy game like Doom Eternal or Cyberpunk 2077 etc..
