Has anyone here RMA'd because of this and got a replacement that works? Never crashes during gameplay and only with web browsers open.

I would love to know the answer to this question. I bought a 3080 ftw3 ultra a month ago and have been dealing with this for the entire time.  "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." I am considering RMA now since i'm out of the return window from where I purchased the card, but don't want to bother if an RMA hasn't resolved the issue for anyone.... It does not happen in games but while watching videos in web browsers, and i do this a lot. I've tried all the fixes I could find including disabling hardware acceleration, prefer maximum performance, deleting shader cache, different drivers, etc.. NOTHING WORKS. I even tried undervolting the card reducing its performance. This computer was built one year ago and was completely stable until I added this card. There are multiple threads in the nvidia forums and here dating back to November with no official response or acknowledgement of the problem from EVGA OR NVIDIA. I find this to be disgusting.

If anyone has had a successful RMA that fixed "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." while just streaming video please speak up.

Thank you.

I haven't followed everyone's troubleshooting steps, but I assume you booted into safe mode, used DDU to uninstall the drivers, rebooted into windows, and reinstalled the drivers using the perform a clean install option with the nvidia driver installer?

Yes. I have done this twice now, while trying different versions of drivers. It has not helped. Boot to safe mode, ran DDU, restarted windows, installed nvidia driver and chose clean install during the setup.

If EVGA/NVIDIA would acknowledge the issue I would at least know if I should wait for a driver update or RMA the card. Very frustrated by how much time i've already spent on this issue.

Try an older driver. The driver crash in web browsers is an issue with newer drivers. Atleast, it’s happened to me on my 2070s anytime I’ve felt the need to update to the latest “greatest” nvidia drivers.

I thought I fixed the desktop freeze after disabling hardware acceleration in both edge and steam. However had another one yesterday when using gog galaxy client while browsing the forums. From what I read, that too uses chromium but I can't find a way to disable hardware acceleration for that client.

Black screens are not happening as much but I think it's the TV buggy software. Screen went black when league of legends went to the loading screen. Alt tag to desktop and back fixed it. Seems the TV drops signal because it's constantly re-initializing VRR when going to and from desktop and applications.

Weird bug for sure.

I got the same black screen crash twice today while watching a twitch stream. I had no problems before today. Event logs says Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

As said before. You all have to report it to nvidia. Open tickets, and also use their driver issue reporting form. After each driver new, if the issue persists.
We have to push them, otherwise who knows how long it takes them to fix.

So I got 4th RTX 30x0 card - now it's EVGA RTX 3060 Ti FTW3 Ultra. And it's 4th card with this issue. On December 16th I sent crashlogs and GPU-Z log to nvidia email and Manuel from nvidia thanked me and said they have hard time to get this type of info from affected users. Till now no fix in drivers.

I have registered one thread on this forum, one guy said it helped him to switch his PSU from multi-rail to single-rail. I have multi-rail PSU (Be Quiet 850W, not switchable to single-rail) so I'm a bit worried if it's a power supply.

BTW this last card is bombastic - good cooling, not noisy, very good boost up to 2050 MHz. I think I will keep it.

Did anyone try with XOC BIOS flashed?

EVGA just replied to my ticket, that i should try "the new bios they attached", because they would increase stability (?). But it seems to be the same, as the XOC bios available here on the forums too.

I've similar issue but not the same.
Using 3080 FTW3 Ultra Gaming. I don't have any black screen error while gaming. But I'm having that error while 3D rendering. It's weird. Tried on different softwares, result is same. GPU fans hitting to 3000 RPM and screen black out. Even cleared cmos with a steel spoon first time in my life lol. Clearing cmos worked on "no output detected" motherboard error issue by the way.
Using stock settings with 2 Splitted + 1 Single PCI-E cables.
Also tried downclock core to 1450 mhz.
All solutions welcomed.

I'm not sure who its an Nvidia driver issue when other manufacturer's RTX 3090 cards don't have the issue in my system.  Only the EVGA cards did.  Even when I put the EVGA 500 watt XOC BIOS on my MSI RTX 3090 I don't have the issue I had with my EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra cards.

That didn't fix the issue for me.  I had the same issue with both the XOC BIOS and the factory BIOS.

If you open the windows event viewer, do you see any errors related to "nvlddmkm"?

I had some "black screen fan at 100" crashes with Division 2 and Cyberpunk, everytime it was a nvlddmkm crash related to the driver.

Reverted back to driver 457.51 and so far no more black screens.

I've been seeing the same driver crashes (nvlddmkm crash/recover) on my 3080 FTW3 Ultra, once or twice a day. It's while I'm using Remote Desktop (from my gaming PC to my work PC) rather than browsing, but I expect it's the same issue. Pretty annoying.

I'm on the latest Game Ready driver (461.09), latest Windows updates, latest GPU BIOS. I had an undervolt on the card (which was totally stable in games) which I've now reverted to the stock settings. We'll see if that has any effect, though I recall I'd tried that previously with no luck.

6700k @ 4.5 Ghz
EVGA Supernova G2 750w (GPU powered by 3 separate rails/PCIe power cables)

Edit: And, just had it happen again. So seems to rule out my undervolt as a culprit.

My EVGA 3090 died after 2 days of use. It actually gave up the ghost whilst playing a YouTube video.

PC restarted and fans never kicked in, i woke up to find my pc had restarted and was stuck at a black screen. When i tried to reboot the card was no longer recognised by my pc, Asus crosshair VIII +5950X 32gb RAM luckily I had not sold my Titan V. I reinstalled that card and the oc came back to life. All error codes gone.

I'm going to try the card one more time and then I'm getting ready to rma my card back to SCAN.UK.

3days for an £1800 GPU to go bad is unacceptable. These cards are not ready for market.

I'm going to make a quick YouTube video to document this hellish experience seen as we cant rely on any of the current youtubers for anything close to reality.

Your telling me that not one 3090 has had these issues. Why has it took for me to read nuanced threads to find out these problems existed after watching virtually every review!!!!!

I had the same random black screens with my FTW3 3070. My buddy has the same thing happening with his FTW3 3090. This is bonkers..........EVGA **** is going on. Sold the 3070 and picked up a 6800XT a week ago. No more black screens. First time I have had an AMD card since the Radeon 6850 11 years ago. So much for paying extra for a G-Sync monitor :(

Thats because the reviewers did it with older drivers. This points also in the direction, that between september and november at some point something went wrong with the drivers. Not that they were perfect at review time, see Jayz2cents videos, but after that they changed something, that led to such black screening issues. Some say, that drivers before 457 did not do this (but probably have other problems)

Mine just black screens and turns back on and I don't really see an error or anything. Thx.

I also have the same problem with Strix 3090 OC, black screen for few seconds while watching streams and the event viewer says that the display driver stopped responding and recovered.
I even had the same issue watching a video locally with MPC HC, the difference is that my PC restarted suddenly after 30 seconds after it happened.

Will be testing the new hotfix released few hours ago:

Please try it guys and see how it goes.

Maybe nvidia doesn't want to admit the issue
I am trying it because I also have the issue with Valhalla randomly crashing and in the bug fixes notes they fixed these crashes. I just want to have some hope.

The issue happens every few days for me so hard to say if it's fixed but meanwhile I am also testing with every PCIe setting in my BIOS set to PCIe Gen 3 (or Gen 4 if you have new AMD mobo) instead of auto as suggested here:
https: //www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/j3mzf9/after_upgrade_to_rtx_3080_watching_youtube_in/

Few guys here say it fixed the browser crashing for them. Probably worth a try.

Edit: Nothing worked, I am still getting black screens with everything I tried. The only thing I didn't try is setting my card power management on Nvidia CP to max performance but even if this fixed my issue I won't do it. My card is constant 100w+ and idle temps are high with it with no fan stop.

Now I'm getting this issue watching movies with MPC as well. Windows notifies me "application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" with the same "nvlddmkm stopped responding" in the event manager.  I'm really hoping it's just a driver issue cause I don't want to RMA my card.

Now I'm getting this issue watching movies with MPC as well. Windows notifies me "application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" with the same "nvlddmkm stopped responding" in the event manager.

Interesting to see that you have same issue as me with MPC.

I'm really hoping it's just a driver issue cause I don't want to RMA my card

I am pretty sure it's the drivers, I had the MPC issue with a previous TUF 3090 as well, It's possible but really unlikely that your GPU and two others I tried have the same problem.

I keep saying this but I keep getting ignored by MOST People for some reason.

PLEASE try drivers (yes I know it's older) 456.98 Hotfix and see if you still get the random black screens!

Report your results.
When this driver was out, there were NO complaints about random black screens that I can remember.  Just people whining about Warzone crashing and LG C9 Gsync flicker stuff.
(this clearly won't work if you have a 3070 or 3060).

Tried today and left PC running on a YouTube playlist, came after few hours and found that in Event Viewer I had the same nvlddmkm crash.

Do you have two monitors connected at the same time (even if one of them is inactive)? I am starting to suspect this issue has to do with multi monitor setups, at least and especially the MPC issue.

A certain video in MPC was giving me TDRs every ~5 mins so it was easy to reproduce the problem, now after I disconnected my 2nd monitor it has been going fine since almost an hour.

I actually have 3 monitors, one is a Gsync monitor.  I had a RTX 2080 Strix previously and didn't have any issues with TDR and when I sold my 2080 and swapped in a EVGA 750Ti, didn't have any issues with TDR.  Honestly, I think a 3 monitor setup was a bit buggy with nvidia drivers as I didn't have issues when I had two monitor setup.  There are times when all the monitors wouldn't go to sleep and one still stays on with the backlight (screen black) but that's a separate problem.  I'm really hoping it's a driver issues as a few people reporting the same problem.

@mugendc4
Thanks for the info.
I can confirm the MPC issue is fixed for me after disconnecting my second monitor, I will see if it fixes the YouTube/browser black screen crashes for me but that will take some time as it's not as frequent as the MPC crashes so it's hard to judge this early.

Anyway you can temporarily try on one monitor for troubleshooting and to rule the problem out, the MPC crashes should be frequent and easy to troubleshoot.
Try on this video with MPC which was crashing every few mins before I disconnected the 2nd monitor: (I can't link here so please remove the space after the https)

I also never had this issue with 1080 Ti and I had this same setup for 3 years, it only started with the 3090 and new drivers (drivers 456.xx and later). I opened a live chat ticket with Nvidia and gave them all this info and memory dumps, they said they will be researching the problem.
