Hi,

I just experienced that issue as well. Screen went black and PC restarted after a short time. It was shorty after starting Windows 10, opening a Zoom Call and Microsoft Edge. No overclocking, but using MSI Afterburner custom fan curve. No crashes in games yet. Rolled back the latest driver to 457.51 now.
Using a single 240 HZ Gsync screen.

Can this damage the video card somehow? Just got the 'nvlddmkm stopped responding' issue for the 3rd time in the past few days. All I was doing was scrolling through the Steam store page. I'm using driver 456.71. Is there a better one I should use?

Probably not, I wouldn't worry about damaging the card.

The issue was very frequent (once a day). I haven't seen this issue for 2 days, after I ran the window update for 20H2. Driver version: 460.97.

I will continue to report.

So in my situation I am using the stock settings, drivers and windows up2date and I only disabled the hardware acceleration (in firefox so far) to avoid the problem.
Surprisingly I also had the issue with steam when I watched a game trailer in the application.. ^^

Yes. Try 456.98 hotfix and report your results.

I was gonna ask if I can RMA because of these black screens and I got my answer thanks, if these problems isn't fixed with the next driver update then I'm gonna try to RMA the card.

A week has passed since I set the energy preference to maximum performance on the 3090 ftw3. No more black screens, spent the last few days gaming heavily for more than 5 hours with no problems...until 2 days ago temps started to climb above the usual numbers, going as high as 78C. No settings have been changed for this entire week to justify the temp increase. And then today while on idle I got some grey checkerboard pixeling for a few second, screen flickered and they were gone, immediately after that got a bsod with a "video scheduler error" note. Whatever it is the issue with the card it seems to be killing it off slowly, I'll be RMA'ing it this week for sure.

Hello All,

Ever since I installed my RTX3090 XC3 Ultra, I have been experiencing random black screen crashes whenever I am watching videos, doing web browsing or being idle at desktop. According to event viewer, these happened because the display driver stopped responding and successfully recovered. These crashes never occurred when I had games running. I have seen some users reporting these crashes here and at the Nvidia site. I came across with a fellow with the same problem and helped me work around it. I have not experienced any black screen crashes since. He recommended to do the following.

-Open Nvidia Control Panel and enable Debug mode under the Help tab.
-Open Nvidia Control Panel, go to Manage 3D settings, under Global Settings enable "Prefer maximum performance" in Power management mode.

It may not work for everyone but I think it is worth a try.
Below are some additional settings and info you may want to know.

-No GPU overclock (with the above settings on, GPU &  Memory clock are at 1695MHz and 9751MHz respectively at all times)
-No CPU overclock
-Nvidia Driver Version: 456.71
-Evga 750 supernova G3
-G-sync enabled monitor

I hope this helps.

With all respect it should be set to prefer maximum performance anyway.
The only time I would not use that setting is perhaps for a laptop to save battery power.

nvlddmkm crashes are what is called a Timeout Detection and Recovery error, or TDR for short. There's a few things that can cause TDRs to happen, mostly related to Windows issues that a reinstall won't necessarily fix. Usually increasing the Timeout delay in the Windows Registry fixes the problem. Microsoft has a document here that explains the Registry settings - https://docs.microsoft.co...play/tdr-registry-keys . The second one, TdrDelay, is what you want to adjust. Increasing it from 2 seconds to 10 seconds usually does the trick. If you continue to get crashes after this, then it is likely a faulty card. Some of you experiencing this should try that and report back if it fixes it or not.

Also since I am also experiencing this (and currently RMAing), do you all have Ryzen CPUs that are experiencing this? This seems to suggest it's a longstanding Ryzen + NVIDIA incompatibility wherein they both blame one another for being at fault.

I've always had my card set for "prefer maximum performance".  Knock on wood, I haven't had the black screen flashes.  I'm still on the "punk" driver (.79).  Tried the 461.09, and didn't like, so I rolled back.

Hi LocutusHUN, I know you from Nvidia forum

CPU: Intel Core i5-10500 (Comet Lake) + SPC Fera 3
MB: MSI MAG Z490 Tomahawk
RAM: G.SKILL 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL16 Aegis
GPU: EVGA RTX 3080 XC3 Ultra
SSD1: Transcend MTE220S 512GB NVMe
SSD2: Transcend MTE220S 1TB NVMe
PSU: Be quiet! Straight Power 11 850W
Case: Be quiet! Pure Base 500DX
Monitor: AOC 24G2U (IPS, 144Hz, FreeSync)

no extra programs running, only OneDrive and Windows Defender.

My observations so far: every time this issue occurs I can see huge spike in GPU frequency (above normal boost frequency). Only happens when refresh rate set to 120Hz and above (1080p monitor). At 60Hz, there are no spikes in frequency and thus no freezes/black screens. I suspect something between Windows (20H2) and Nvidia driver. In 3D (games, benchmarks) there are absolutely no problems.

Same issue still happening. I swear it has to do with Chrome / Hardware acceleration on browsers or something. I have iCUE as well. Testing it with it disabled.

Yeah, so it seems we dont have anything in common. Just like i did this comparsion with others too, the only common part is always the 30xx gpu, and the nvidia drivers. Not even the gpu brand seems to play a role. Have seen asus, msi too.

Recently on one of my friends ticket nvidia level2 support told, that they are aware of the problem, and the driver team is working on it. This came out weeks after emailing back and forth with standard troubleshooting tips, that never bought anything. I played trough the same thing with nvidia, but at the end they answered me, that i should try rma it with evga. Yeah, good luck for that. For evga it takes 10 days for every response, so while i had 10 answers from nvidia, i got 1 from evga, and they want to play trough the same troubleshooting nonsense again. So i just confronted them with each others opinion, and also the other statement from level2 too. Yet to see what they answer.

What i found in the latest drivers release notes however is, that they introduced a setting, wich lets you cap the background applications framerate. I wonder if this has to do with browser crashes? Maybe if we limit Chrome to 60 or 120? I dont know. Waiting on an answer for this too.

I have this issue as well and I'm using Asus Strix RTX3080.  Never had any issues on the RTX2080 so I'm assuming something is up with the ampere drivers.  I updated to the latest driver 461.09 and still have this issue.  I edit the TDR in the registry and it was fine for a few days after I updated to 461.09, I got 2 nvlddmkm crashes.

I had crashes before I installed iCue, so I don't think that could be the problem.  It seems to only crash on desktop when web browsing.  I'm testing to disable hardware acceleration to see if that makes any difference.

I never had icue installed and i get the blackscreen of death, even after 2 fresh window 10 installs my problem still exists. I also believe i shouldn't have to make registry edits and change 10 different settings to make the card not crash. I'm starting the RMA proccess next week.

I don't have iCue installed and still get the black screen. It happens randomly, exclusively when running programs with any sort of hardware acceleration, such as Chrome, Figma, or Discord. I'm positive it has to do with the hardware acceleration capabilities of these programs because it never happens when running an intensive game.

Looking forward to seeing the issue fixed.

I had the crashing problem with the black screens and fans spinning at 100% fan speed on a PC with a new install of Windows 10 Pro, all the latest drivers, and only a few games and benchmarks installed.  No iCue or anything else installed.

I replaced my EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 with a MSI 3090 card and the problem went away.  After flashing the 500W XOC EVGA BIOS or the 520 watt Kingpin BIOS to the MSI card I don't have the black screen and fans at 100% speed problem I had with the EVGA card.

I would love to know the answer to this question. I bought a 3080 ftw3 ultra a month ago and have been dealing with this for the entire time.  "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." I am considering RMA now since i'm out of the return window from where I purchased the card, but don't want to bother if an RMA hasn't resolved the issue for anyone.... It does not happen in games but while watching videos in web browsers, and i do this a lot. I've tried all the fixes I could find including disabling hardware acceleration, prefer maximum performance, deleting shader cache, different drivers, etc.. NOTHING WORKS. I even tried undervolting the card reducing its performance. This computer was built one year ago and was completely stable until I added this card. There are multiple threads in the nvidia forums and here dating back to November with no official response or acknowledgement of the problem from EVGA OR NVIDIA. I find this to be disgusting.

If anyone has had a successful RMA that fixed "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." while just streaming video please speak up.

Thank you.
