I had this happen to me for the first time on the air cooled 3090 ftw3 ultra.  I was watching a youtube video.

Hi all,

I've just updated the firmware via the precision x1 tool and watched some YT videos without any issues. Nvidia settings are stock.
May there is a fix for all?

cheers

You guys mean, leaving hw acceleration on in the browser, and the energy option simply on normal? And this way, you dont have anymore black screen in the browser?

Just a question, since new 460 drivers doesnt seem to fix it either.

Can anyone else in addition confirm, that removing the driver with ddu in safe mode, disabling internet, so that windows cant update to some **** drivers, then clean installing the new driver SOLVES the issue, WITHOUT the need for prefer max performance setting in the driver, AND also enabled Hardware Acceleration in the browser? So no more black screens after days?

I am just seeking for confirmation, because i never had to do any of the above things in the last years, simple driver updates via GFE always worked... so i very much doubt, that the issue is really lieing there, but i keep seeing similar posts...

from what i've been testing, using DDU and the latest nvidia drivers both stable and the hotfix version this issue is still persisting. chrome and firefox both are crashing with the connection to the GPU lost. hardware acceleration is disabled in chrome.

In my case, disabling hardware acceleration fixed the issue of black screens during Youtube video playback.

Anyone who still gets black screen, can you test following: If it goes black, go into your displays menu, and disable or enable gsync/vrr.
For me, this gives back display signal immediately.

Main issue, is back when Windows Updated, it brought about the black screen crash. You can fix it by Alt-Tab or Ctrl+Alt+Del.

This is a Windows related issue, and NOT 100% nVidia Driver related. I am sure they both coincide but this is mainly an Windows update issue. Been dealing with this sense 20H2 released.

That could be true, but as soon as i throw back my 1070 or gt710 in the machine, these problems go away. Only the 3080 has black screen problems in idle. So it may be triggered by something else, but the problem is surely with the 30xx series and/or its drivers.

Turning Hardware Acceleration off in the browser and leaving the power setting on “Normal” seems to be working for me now. I did provide my specifics to NVIDIA using their driver feedback tool. Good luck!

I came across this thread as i just encounetred the same issue. Only have my EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING card a little over a week.
Was watching Youtube Vidoes via Firefox - the screen looked to stop responding but mouse still moving. Then the mouse stalls - then both screens go black for a few seconds and then come back to life.

On Driver 460.89.
Using EVGA Precision X1 v1.1.4 (Latest)
Firmware 2.01.15
Bios Version - 94.02.26.80.70
I have Enabled "Debug Mode" and changed the Power Management Mode to "Prefer Maximum Performance" to see if this helps.
Just to point out that I never had this issue with my EVGA 2070 Super which has just been replaced with this 3080 - rest of the system is the same.

Same here, just got a 3090 FTW3 Ultra a couple of weeks ago and started having this same problem a few days ago. Black screen for a few seconds with no signal message and then it comes back. Setting the power option to prefer maximum performance seems to have fixed the issue on idle, however I just had a black screen while playing from which I could not recover. I could still talk to my friends over discord and heard the windows sound you get when you disconnect hardware although on restart there was no log of any driver issue/error. When this first started happening I swapped the older 2080 it's supposed to replace and had no issues at all. My local vendor is reluctant to refund it and mentioned replacing it, however reading from this posts I suspect it wouldn't make a difference.

Was playing Cyberpunk today with my 3080 xc3 ultra and started experiencing intermittent black screen that would last for about half a second. After exiting Cyberpunk it still persists randomly on desktop with my browser open.

Not sure if this is a help to ya, but i updated Steam on my rig yesterday and after that when i tried to initiate any game in it, it would get to the player character pick screen/start, id pick and then it would reboot my whole rig. I rolled it back and its fine now so if your on Steam and updated it could be some or all of the problem. The rig im on is in my signature for the most part.

Guys, read the op. You are mixing up problems here. The black screen is just a result of something else, and the OP didnt open this for cyberprank2077 issues.

I just came accross this video, not entirely the same issue we are experiencing here buut it seems like this guy might be on to something with the voltage fluctuating so much and what he does to lock it. From my end, setting the power to prefer maximum performance seems to have stopped the loss of signal while on idle for the last couple of days, seeing that this setting forces a constant voltage/clock speed it kind of makes sense that it stops whatever these fluctuations are doing. Since I can't copy links here just search on youtube for "rtx 3080 problems fixed, no crashes step by step guide", by frame chasers, again it is not the same issue that he addresses but the reasoning seems very similar to the issues we are having

I have been searching for this issue and it seems that it has also affected 1000 series and 2000 series in the past. The prevailing solution for many was repasting the GPU. I consider this procedure difficult if not impossible for the average user and it may also void warranty?

Still, there seems to be an issue with the sensors making system believe that the GPU is about to burn and thus shuts down everything and fans rev high.

In my case ctrl alt del etc did NOT work either when display went off I just had to hard reboot nothing else would work.

Currently expecting my RMA card to see if things improve. Even when I wasn't getting black screens my fans were going up and down ignoring all fan curves and hysteresis.

Is anyone having the 3-4 second black screen with a windows event log stating the drivers stopped responding that *is not* using multiple monitors at > 60hz?

My partner and I are doing some testing, I had the issues in my PC with a 3090, but upon upgrading to a kingpin no problems. Her new rig (which got the 3090 I was having issues with as the RMA wasn't approved at the time) is not having the issues and she's using 2x 1080 60hz monitors.

So I'm suspecting that (because the KP works fine in mine) there's a flaw in some of the cards that only manifests on multi-monitor setups with higher hz (separate from the known driver issue, as that one has the card going full throttle at idle, which I didn't experience).

I keep saying this but I keep getting ignored by MOST People for some reason.

PLEASE try drivers (yes I know it's older) 456.98 Hotfix and see if you still get the random black screens!

Report your results.
When this driver was out, there were NO complaints about random black screens that I can remember.  Just people whining about Warzone crashing and LG C9 Gsync flicker stuff.
(this clearly won't work if you have a 3070 or 3060).

I still see this issue; black screen and restart on low GPU usage, but not for gaming session. driver version: 460.97. The GPU is 3080 strix, connected to a LG CX (gsync enabled) and another 4k monitor(no gsync). I haven't tested it on the EVGA 3080 yet.

I did not have this problem using EVGA 2070s.

I experienced a few times after physically turning off / on TV or monitor.

Mine died after 4days I believe as a result of PX1, it worked great day one then PX1 tells me it wants to do a firmware update I’m like yeah EVGA must have put special sauce in it well turns out looks like they did after a day of heavy gaming the card died.
I got it to display again after having it disconnected for an hour. But it never ever worked the same with random crashes, I RMA’d it that same day, the shop that I bought it from bench tested it and came to the conclusion that the GPU crashes during workloads and takes time to load. Not sure what they mean by time to load. But the new one is on route and I’m just changing the led colour and then deleting that software wish there was just an LED version of PX1

Re: RTX 3080/3090 Black screen possible solution 2020/12/28 20:53:47 (permalink)
Got a EVGA GeForce RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA, same issue here.

Interesting as ~457.30 (or .51) caused different issues than what I have currently. At the time using CamLink to have my camera show up in Teams/Zoom was a guaranteed crash, or often things like playing video in the browser or resizing a browser window would cause one. In these cases I could see the driver crashes in event viewer.

Now I'm on the latest 460.97: all the camera/browser issues seem to be gone, BUT instead I'm getting occasional crashes when I launch games - same all 3 monitors blank out and come back a few seconds later - games clearly crash when this happens. Somehow these crashes don't show up in the event log anymore though.

Did the firmware update with precision, I'll report back on that. If that doesn't help I'll try the power management mode thing after.

EDIT: If anyone from Nvidia/EVGA wants debugging data / log files I'm more than happy to provide them, or do testing.
