Chaps,

I'm afraid the only solution is a complete Windows reinstall.

Since I have done that today, it's run perfectly with no black screens or resets.

The 460 driver were installed afterwards.

After updating yesterday (clean install via DDU w/networking disabled) I black screened just like before. I played CP2077 for two hours with no problems in game. Was watching YT as I ate and black screened within minutes. This is after - new PSU, SSD, multiple OS installs, new DP cables, removing GSYNC monitor/TV from the setup, etc. lol. I set the power back to max performance and no black screens all day today. I seriously hate having to do that. The card sits pulling +/- 100w for no reason at all other than to not crash. I hope they fix it soon.

I've went back to shutting my PC down when not in use

Thanks, that just means for me, that i dont have to do all this, because those basic troubleshooting steps dont help.
Its probably caused by something else, so that some people have it, some not.
I suspect it somehow also depends on what the real idle clock and voltage is, wich may differ from user to user, depending on screens, resoultion, refresh rate, gsync etc. Maybe even on temperature.
Maybe some users idle clock and voltage is higher by default, because of some setting or background program, and this is why they dont get this error. Or they did something with OC, or undervolt, or i dont know.
Or they use prefer max performance setting anyways, and therefore didnt meet this problem yet.

Just tossing my hat in the ring - having the same issues with my XC3 Ultra 3080.

Just tried turning prefer maximum performance on in the NVIDIA Control Panel - crossing my fingers that it solves the problem!

That doesnt seem to be the same problem as OP. Unless you have some program on autostart, that causes this.

Hi, I don't think I have anything in automatic start, also because everything works with the old card! How do I know if I have something auto-starting?
Thanks.

I recently installed the 3080 XC3 Ultra and am getting the 2-3 second black screen flicker in only one specific situation so far.  If I navigate to Amazon Music Unlimited and start a station or playlist it does the black screen thing.  I'm using Edge browser and not the app. Switching stations instigates the issue again. No issues with Youtube videos in standard, theater, or full screen modes.  Zero issues with gaming.  I also tried setting to max performance in NVIDIA control panel with the same result.

Have you guys tried disabling HW acceleration in the browser settings ? I am having random freezes while browsing leading to a reboot. Hasn't happened since disabling that option.

If you can reliably reproduce it, you should send in a support ticket and reference this post.

I've got one in and the person/people handling mine weren't even aware of this being a thing and AFAIK they aren't reproducing it on their end (I suspect that's because testing it at idle browsing the web for a few hours to try and maybe get the crash isn't a thing they do).

I doubt there'll be any possibility of fixing it until they're able to reproduce the issue and have some RMA'd cards to test it on to see what's causing it. It is making the whole support process a bit of a PITA.

Based off what i've read this sounds kinda similar to an issue i had 4 years ago with Nvidia drivers where i would get random black screen flickering, not sure if this applies to you all but try going into the "Nvidia Control Panel --->Adjust Desktop Color Settings---->Content Type Reported To The Display ----> Change from Auto-select to Desktop Programs.

Hope it helps.

It's not just flickering, when it happens it causes a driver crash (that's why it locks up for a good 4-5 seconds). You can see it in the event viewer under windows/system.

Something happens on the affected cards when at idle/near idle speeds that the driver can't handle. You can actually "solve" the issue by setting the global power option to max performance in the nvidia control panel, but that's not an actual solution given how much more energy that uses and wastes (RIP electric bill), and damn sure isn't a viable solution for an $1800 product. That kind of flaw isn't something you just accept on an $1800 product.

I did once already and have an open support for the card they sent as a replacement. They don't know how to reproduce the issue (since it's semi-random) so they're giving me a harder time with this one.

I suspect a bad batch because the cards are fairly close in serial numbers. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone that had this issue was within a couple hundred on the serial numbers.

I sent something in to NVIDIA using the reporting feature in GeForce Experience, but you're suggesting I should open a ticket with EVGA correct?

edit ... of course now it is not doing it. Driver updated this morning to 460.89.  From the release notes and open issues I'm getting the impression that they are aware of the problem, but maybe I'm being optimistic?  The black screen flicker and my high frequencies at idle seem to be on their 'to-do" list.

There's multiple black screen issues that aren't the same thing.

Flickering (non-driver crashing) is separate from a 4-5 second system freeze and black screen that crashes the driver, which is separate from an indefinite blackscreen and system freeze/soft reboot. That last one seems to be related to the red LED of death.

I do get occasional flickers, which many be a driver issue with high response monitors, but I also get the second type of black screen and have got the third one twice. I'm expecting this card to go red LED of death at some point, which at least is an immediate RMA from what I've read since the card gets bricked.

After installing today's driver I had a black screen followed by signal loss. This was trigged when windows displayed the smart screen filter for launching a questionable exe.

I was able to recover by disabling and enabling gamer response on the TV. Funny enough the split screen bug on restart when windows loads in seems to be fixed.

Interestingly smartscreen is integrated with the web browser where I get the freeze followed by a soft restart if I have HW acceleration enabled. Seems all this could be linked.

I don't see this on my 3090 FTW3.

Small update: I've installed a kingpin into the system the 3090 was in, and so far smooth sailing and no issues.

Relevant because Support can't reproduce the issue and it passes their testing (which isn't surprising since it's pretty random that hit happens, and only under certain conditions that I'm almost positive they don't test for). So if you're trying to RMA for this issue they may make you jump through hoops as they think it's a system issue and not an issue with the card itself. But, as I suspected, it's almost definitely a card issue given the kingpin is working fine in my system.

Just an update here.  The new driver didn't help stop the black screen issue in my specific case.  Disabling hardware acceleration in the browser did the trick and the problem is reproducible when I re-enable.  I'm trying to get on chat with NVIDIA tech support to at least log this to pile on the case for the next driver update.
