AH sorry guys, I just realized you can see my SN for the cards in the video, Ill put another one up soon. Needless to say, my 970s have no whine while running Unengine Haven.

I tried making a video of mine making some pretty apparent noises (as in, it was readily obvious to my hearing) that varied as I would move around in Minecraft (yes, simply Minecraft) in an attempt to capture it, yet I couldn't hear it in the playback. I'm not sure why. I'm not defending the claim that all of them have the issue nor suggesting that yours does, but in my experience, both of my cards I've tried have had very apparent issues (at least to my hearing) that didn't show in a recording I tried making of one of them. The third one should hopefully be arriving soon so I guess that will tell me whether I got unlucky twice in a row and the third time will be the charm, or if... *sigh* there is some sort of issue making this occur in my system and/or to my hearing, and only with these GeForce GTX 970 cards, yet not to EVGA's testing (they claim the returns are passing testing, so I don't know...), and if I'll be stuck perpetually RMAing it...

That video just shows you've got 2 jet engines in your computer case, couldn't really hear anything else but the fans. If you did get lucky and didn't get coil whine that's awesome. I was lucky with my 770 ftw's not having it, nor did any of my older EVGA cards (580, 670, etc)

I read on one forum both guys had GTX970 G1 and first had coil whine, when other upgrade on GTX970 he try and his card didn't produce noise. They decide to try card without coil whine in PC of other guy who hear noise. And you know what happen... In one PC both cards produce coil whine in other both cards didn't produce coil whine. One with coil whine is Seasonic 850 AM other I don't know but something as LC Power or CHIFTEC I think where both cards didn't produce coil whine. But PSU is didn't source of noise, only maybe reason why cards produce noise in one PC and maybe something else.

I'm not sure I buy having the PSU be the cause of coil Whine. The PSU itself could have coil whine but I'm not sure I put much stock in that scenario happening.

If PSU is silent than I would not recommend spending money on PSU just like that if you are not sure that will change something. Lot of people have such problems with different brands and I read that happen in my country. Now people somehow scare little from GTX970.

I have the SuperNova 850 G2 in hybrid mode so the fan isn't even on and I still have coil Whine. I tried the card in another PC I have and it still whines. It only happens when the fans are spinning so I think that other post about it being the PSU is absolutely bogus.

Before my third replacement arrives, I stuck this one back in to do more testing. Alarmingly, though it's minor, I've noticed the card squeals in a mere web browser (Firefox)! EVGA's own home page makes it whine when the media changes, and scrolling on this very page I'm typing this from produces it. If I highlight text and drag, it's pretty noticeable too. Even not scrolling and hovering the mouse over certain things, or sometimes even moving the mouse, makes it occur! What the heeeeeeeck! This is ridiculous! I listened around my case as I scrolled and the noise is indeed coming straight from the graphics board. Not the CPU area, not the PSU, but the graphics card. This can be heard over 4 case fans and a CPU fan running (HDDs are powered down). I'm admittedly not having much hope for the third that's on it's way. I probably won't even remove the plastic on it this time, and if I knew why my videos weren't capturing the sound (and how to get them to), I'd literally record the unboxing and first attempt at it with my PC to show there's something going on. This really makes one think it must be my system then, right? I don't know, but I do know that this does not/did not occur with a number of other graphics cards. It's not until I put a GeForce GTX 970 in that this starts. It's only been two (so far...), but this is getting silly.

I can quite assure you the noise is not there in person, or in the video. That said, Ive had four GTX-970s in recent months. A Zotac, a PNY, and these two EVGAs. One was a reference blower style card while the other 3 used proprietary coolers, etc. None of them exhibited this coil whine issue. Now, Im not saying you are saying they all have the whine issue like the poster I quoted earlier, but Im willing to bet the issue isnt as wide spread as its made out to be. People typically come to these boards to complain rather than praise... or perhaps I'm just really lucky? I suppose that a could be the case as well. Stephenk291 That video just shows you've got 2 jet engines in your computer case, couldn't really hear anything else but the fans. If you did get lucky and didn't get coil whine that's awesome. I was lucky with my 770 ftw's not having it, nor did any of my older EVGA cards (580, 670, etc)
Which is why I kept the camera outside of the case for the first part of that video (@ ~0:35), where there is no added noise from crosswind. The system itself isn't really noisy, however when you stick a mic in the direct airflow from a fan thats inches away, you get a lot of wind noise. That said, you couldn't hear anything but the fans because the fans are the only thing making noise.

The replacement of the replacement of my original attempt (that is, my third in total) also exhibits coil whine for me, and in the same manor as the first two. I'm starting to wonder if those are individual defects that I got gifted with getting three times in a row (seems unlikely) or a series-wide issue (even if it only occurs in certain circumstances). I'm done trying to explore the matter though because I honestly shouldn't have to. It shouldn't behave this way; it's intolerable. Yet, it passed testing on EVGA's end. I'm lost; I truly am. I'm tired of the GeForce GTX 970 already and I never even really had it to begin with.

Have you tried said cards in a different system? Might help determine if its something in your rig that is causing an "incompatibility"?

Received and installed EVGA 980SC #2 and no coil whine. Put in 10+ hrs of Far Cry 4 in SLI... They are already great friends. I'm 2 for 2!!! I will say this... I think the 9 series, but specifically the 980's are a home run!!! Powerful... Quiet... and Fuel Effecient!!! They also look very classy with the led lighting... Very Impressed with the ACX 2.0. I've yet to see either gpu's fans go above 30%. Couldn't really ask for anything else. Great job Nvidia and EVGA.

I have no other system I can practically test it in, unfortunately. I will, however, be testing my old PSU. The noise is definitely coming from the graphics card and not the PSU, and that I am absolutely certain of, but it's worth trying, I figure (even if this does not occur from any other video card I've had in my PC, but instead only every GeForce GTX 970 I've tried so far). If this does cure the noise, my EVGA SuperNova G2 750 watt PSU that I only got a few months ago would seemingly be the cause? If so, this would actually be interesting considering my GeForce GTX 560 Ti (also EVGA) failed shortly after changing PSUs, with what I believe is a burnt mark near what I believe is a chip related to the power. I would be very, very upset if changing my PSU is what caused my video card to fail, which I then attempted to replace with a product (one I had to wait some months on for availability) that became a perpetual frustration. I'd really shy away from EVGA in the future if the PSU caused all this to begin with. Still, right now, only GeForce GTX 970 cards do this, and it seems to be a less than rare problem, so I'm pretty lost in it all.

I tried my old PSU and the problem remains exactly the same. It's not the PSU. I already knew the noise itself wasn't coming from the PSU, but I thought maybe it was worth a try anyway.

Can you try to run 3dmark ice storm and cloud gate? All 8 cards I tested don't whine in unigine benchmark but they do whine in ice storm. Make sure your FPS is like 1000+. Try to keep your fans on low RPM. Thanks!

Along with having tested with another PSU, I also did have a chance to test with another system, using a different outlet too. The results were the same. I've already confirmed my PC works fine with at least three other graphics cards, but I thought maybe something in my PC when paired with the GeForce GTX 970s was causing it, but it also did it in another system, suggesting that it's the the GeForce GTX 970s (at least the three I've tried thus far). What's strange is all three behaved the same though, and more strangely, EVGA said the one I returned passed testing on their end. I would start to suspect only some people are hearing it, but two other people I've asked about it both heard it. I just sent the second back, and have the "faulty" third here with me that I have to wait on returning until they receive the second one back before another RMA can be set up for this third one. Then I'll have to wait on receiving the forth, which I've little faith won't turn out to be the same as the prior three, just to find out I have another two to return at that point. It's a terrible feeling. If I am not posting here a month from now saying I am returning my sixth one, I will be surprised; that's how low my confidence is with these GPUs.

This thing is like an F1 racer. I can hear it outside of a closed room, standing next to an active air conditioner. Only apparent when benchmarking, or playing virtually any game. Though when I do... watch out.

Re: Poll, who has coil whine?

Illusion_of_Progress I tried making a video of mine making some pretty apparent noises (as in, it was readily obvious to my hearing) that varied as I would move around in Minecraft (yes, simply Minecraft) in an attempt to capture it, yet I couldn't hear it in the playback. I'm not sure why.
Does it do it with games that are reasonable for a GTX 970? I've never owned a card that doesn't wine pretty loudly when at absurd FPS. Between 670 FTW's, 680 Classifieds, Titans, 780 Classifieds, 780 Ti SC's, all of them would wine when at extremely high frame rates. All cards do. Put them under a reasonable load where they pull <200 FPS and they don't make any noise. MaelstromOC Mine does, but only when the framerate is like 200+, which is basically never. 980 Reference
All cards from every generation will do this. Absurd FPS causes a whine. TommyLai Can you try to run 3dmark ice storm and cloud gate? All 8 cards I tested don't whine in unigine benchmark but they do whine in ice storm. Make sure your FPS is like 1000+. Try to keep your fans on low RPM. Thanks!
See above. FPS of 1000 will whine on any card. Who cares? That's a completely unrealistic scenario. I don't doubt that there are coil whine problems on GTX 970's. People complained about the same thing on reference based GTX 670's as well. I never had a problem with the 670 FTW's (had 5 different cards), but they were housed in a 680 PCB. GTX 970's most likely use considerably cheaper components than GTX 980's. There's a reason they're $330 instead of $550 like the 980, and it's not all from performance or price premium of the 980 being the flagship. My main point was that I've not owned a card in the last few years that won't whine under an extreme frame rate scenario. Anything from $400 670 FTW's to $1000 Titans, and I've had multiple of each card.
