I'm more interested in a gtx titan 2.0 or a 980ti right now. I think long exposure to this coil whine is messing my ears up.:(

Start wearing ear plugs then because I'm thinking you're going to be waiting for quite a while. The gtx 960 hasn't even been officially announced yet and it's already near the end of Jan., let alone AMD's response to the whole 900 series.

Now to send the third one back and contact support about looking towards a fifth, I guess?

Which version do you use? SC, SSC or FTW?
I now have my first SSC and it has buzzing - and this after 3x SC.. very disappointed :(

I'm not the original commenter but I'd like to add my experience. I too, came from a SC to a SSC (new revision). Tried 2 different SC cards and they both whined really bad. Took a chance with the new SSC and like yours, it still emits slight buzzing when gaming, but compared to the noises my SC was giving off its night and day. Ideally I would have liked the coil whine / buzzing to be completely gone, but I'm working on accepting the fact that coil whine is a "thing of life" with all brands of high end cards now. Doesn't make it ok, but I've given up. Too much money and hassle. I'm at least thankful EVGA reduced the noise a bit.

Yes I do, but only in instances when my frame rate is above 144 (MY monitors refresh rate). So in loading screens and stuff like that.

No.

Maybe we should post our PSU to see if there is a coloration there as well.

That has been suggested and it's not the answer, unfortunately.

I tried mine with two different PSUs (a fairly new EVGA SuperNova G2 750 and PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610), and in two different systems. It had whine in each scenario.

Meanwhile, no other graphics card in either system has, or has ever had, this behavior. Yet, four out of four GeForce GTX 970s have done it, the last of which was supposedly tested for it beforehand (and at least the first of which was said to have been tested after the fact and had passed on EVGA's end).

Three out of three people could hear it.

The above are my observations/behaviors, but anyone is free to draw their own conclusions.

I hope EVGA is taking notice of this thread. This thread has been going on forever. Yes, some don't have coil whine, but look at the majority that do. I hope EVGA realizes how much their customers want quality cards for the quality price they charge.

There are several VGA plug ports on your "EVGA SuperNova G2 750."  Have you tried different combinations to see if isolating the VGA connection helps.

As I understand it, (which is subject to error) coil whine can be kind of like harmonics with sound waves.  With multiple rails on the PSU and changing the speed the video card runs at, you could find some sweet spot where you deaden the coil whine.

My card overclocks it self at 1442mhs sometimes 1455mhz, maybe that is a sweet spot.  I'm sure I will find some game at some card speed that will cause coil whine but I have no desire to go looking for it.

I'm not an expert nor have I slept in a Holladay Inn Express resently

I appreciate the ideas to try, but I am pretty hopeless that won't do anything as it did it on another PSU anyway, and also on yet another system, so I don't think it's my PSU. Everything is pointing to the GeForce GTX 970 cards themselves for me.

I have a GTX 980 ACX 2.0 FTW and my system is dead silent, except for the whine coming from the video card, it's driving me nuts, whenever I open up a game it is like I home-in on the noise and it's the only thing I can think of.

I'm using a mini ITX case made of glass, so I was super careful to pick the fans, everything is great except for the gghihieeiiieiiheihehghieiii coming from the video card.

My PSU is a Seasonic 520W platinum rated, brand new.

Here is a recording where you can compare my system noise to the video card noise (most noticeable is at 1:10):
Hm.. it won't let me post a link or embed a video.. go to youtube and open video  watch?v=-uh8KOmDvW0

I tried under clocking to reference speeds, but the noise is still there. I regret my purchase.

No coil whine on my EVGA SC GTX 980 ACX 2.0.
I did try both GTX 980 ASUS Strix and MSI Gaming and ASUS had mild coil whine though present even if fps limited to 60 fps and MSI one was just plain awful.

I wonder if EVGA is taking notice of this thread? A lot of coil whiners EVGA... I think demand is to NOT have these cards squealing like pigs.

I've got coil whine on my GT 970 FTW aswell. Not always, most of the time it's not there. But when reaching high FPS like in game menus the whine is through the roof!

Re: Poll, who has coil whine? 2015/01/22 01:52:51 (permalink)
Same here.. Even changed PSU, invested in better grounding, bought the back-plate (well, this was not for coil noise, but for aesthetics) and put the card in prolonged sessions of FurMark and Heaven benchmarks and still the same ..
The support team was helpful, but besides: are you sure it's not the PSU causing this, we didn't get much further.
To be honest, the system I have for the moment is dead silent (three Noctua fans with Ultra Low Noise adapters) in a 250D enclosure and this is not felt in all applications.. I had no coil whine in Borderlands I and the Pre Sequel, however Borderlands II, just by launching it and it starts whining like someone bit it ...
The only thing that gets this noise reduced are the fans when are put in Extreme mode (>60% speed), but that defiles the whole purpose of having a silent system unfortunately..

Re: Poll, who has coil whine? 2015/01/23 11:56:36 (permalink)
*sigh* I'm really just about done. I've tried different PSUs, PCI Express slots, removing sound cards and extra hard drives, and even trying other systems and using different outlets. I am completely dumbfounded as to why every single GeForce GTX 970 behaves with coil whine, suggesting it's something other than the card, yet changing all of those factors fixes nothing, and any other graphics card does not do this in my system. This really suggests to me an issue with the GeForce GTX 970s by default, but... I do not enough about that sort of thing to make such a claim (especially with the matter that others claim they don't have the issue). So... count me as completely lost...

I wish I could just get my money back. I originally had a bad feeling in me when I got the first bad one, but figured "hey, rather than return it to Amazon and get my money back, why not try support?" and here I am months and multiple cards later with a growing price investment on a product that will only drop in value, and worse yet, with no end seemingly in sight! How absurd. Count this customer hopeless and frustrated.

The only way out of this nightmare seems to be to take the next one I get back from RMA and sell it second hand, cutting my losses. If it comes to that, this will be the last nVidia and EVGA product I buy. All this started because my EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti failed with a burnt chip. I would have still been happy enough with that at least. I figured I'd actually a higher end card for a change, and this is what happens, and I just get told that coil whine "is a thing that exists" when I have never had any other nVidia graphics card do this like this! I don't know what happened this generation (or the last), but this is it for me. It is not acceptable for a graphics card to be singing you a song while you use it, not at any price, and especially not for close to $400.

Yes I have it too. I installed a gpu waterblock on my 970 superclocked acx 2.0 (I bought it a few days ago), the temps
are awesome but I can hear some coil whine even without playing a game. Its not
very loud but without my headset I can hear it pretty good. Normally I would get another card
but I dont know if that is possible with my waterblock (also it takes ages to install one =P).
I guess I have to live with it :c

I just have had a 970 SSC (3975-KR) Asic 69.5 for a 2 days now and have not once heard coil whine. I have had the side of my case off and put my ear near the card and heard nothing but fan noise from my case fans.

FWIW..

my R9 290 has it, but I can only hear it when I have my case open and its stressed. It's under water too. I think previous cards I owned in the past had it, but I never heard it because of the fans.
