GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 installed yesterday! I'm happy to say that I can't hear anything at all! Except when benchmarking and getting 3000FPS in low setting tests. Even then it's not really too loud, but it is noticable. I would go berserk if I had to listen to coil whine all the time like some of you guys have to. I feel for you.

I just got my fifth (or is it my sixth, I lost count?) GeForce GTX 970 FTW, this time a FTW+, and the problem remains with this one too, albeit to a lesser extent. I'd say it's between half and 2/3 as bad still. Minecraft (the worst example of the behavior other than the Windows Experience Index) is still basically unplayable. Since the game I'm playing mostly right now doesn't seem to have it too badly (but it's still there), I'm going to keep it in and play it with this game and maybe try some benchmarks in an attempt to "burn it in", but... I'm not hopeful since the last one wasn't helped by that. Also, even if I can't really "hear" it all too well, I've got this ringing in my ears now and it's not pleasant. If it doesn't get better fast, back it goes too. Honestly, the only reason I even tried this instead of selling it and giving up is because I was hoping being a better model (FTW+ instead of the standard FTW) that it would have helped it. It did, but not nearly enough. I had a GeForce GTX 970 FTW+ sit for about a week still shrink-wrapped collecting dust on the shelf because I feared what it'd do; that'd it'd be a waste of time, and sure enough, it did and was.

Yes, coil whine on some menus but it doesn't seem to be an issue while under load so its probably not the PSU. Mainly an issue fixed by fixing a few settings in the game. Probably an issue regarding high fps on main menus, however most games prevent this (excessive load/rendering). If I had to guess you guys may notice it as its probably a generic problem where the excessive FPS causes unnecessary rendering on something that doesn't require very much processing like a main menu. I believe 3Dmark has a brief moment where coil whine will show itself when the program first starts loading, but you have to get up to your card and listen to it. If I enable VSync its fine though.

Common misconception, but no actually. It's not caused by frame rate but by the power being pulled. Why it does this with some games and not others or to more or less of an extent with some isn't something I can answer, but it's not the frame rate itself causing it. The graphics card doesn't care if it's rendering 1 frame or 1,000, but the load put on it is what causes the noise. If this only happened in rare cases like that where it did have an arguably unneeded load from rendering 5,000 FPS at a menu or brand into clip, and to a minor extent where you had to be close or listening for it, that'd be one thing, but it happens to me in Minecraft under 100 FPS, and to anything but a minor extent (it's not just noticeable, it's very displeasureable to play with). It happens in practical use, in many real games, and to a point that it's very distracting, and that is the difference. When I first load a Minecraft world up, I have a much higher frame rate at the onset (since next to none of the worls is loaded in that first instant), and the frame rate understandably drops as the world fully renders out to the render distance. When I first load the world up, I have no coil whine to speak of. Once it loads out, the frame rate drops more and more, yet the also noise starts more and more (and varies/changes as it loads further out even more). If I look straight into the sky, with only the skybox texture being rendered, I get a high frame rate, yet the noise vanishes. If I look level to the horizon, my frame rate drops, and much more is rendered, and the noise shows itself. It's especially bad in Minecraft because as I look around, the noise varies. This is an example of a real distraction in practical use.

Nope. I used to on my reference zotac 780ti, it would make the psu whine as well. I used a monster power center with clean power stage 2 and the psu whine stopped because it was getting cleaner power but the card persisted albeit lower. With my new evga gtx980 reference absolutely no whine unless I am in a game menu with vsync off with over 9000 fps...

Yes. Ended up on this forum while investigating coil whine on the EVGA 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0. Seems like it started recently? Had been playing games with headphones on, then suddenly people started complaining about a screeching noise when I was talking on my headset -- only happened with the game window active. Later, started up the game, could hear extremely loud whining coming from the case; investigated; it was the video card; and it is pretty ear piercing on a loading screen. Even with FPS synced to monitor, I can still perceive it with the case door off. The alarming part of this issue is people hearing it through my headset -- major problem. Anyone know why this would be?

When I first got my EVGA GTX 970 FTW, I thought I heard a little coil while in the first few days. However since it seems to have settled down, and I do not really hear it any longer. Have been running it for over 3 months now.

Had it pretty bad on my first 970 ftw. Was close to RMA-ing but then my second came in. Ran some heavy benchmarks for long periods of time testing out some oc's. If there was a coil whine I wouldn't have heard it over my noctuas ramping up to 3000. Kinda forgot about it, seems to have subdued quite a bit. Just did a run of 3dmark icestorm. That used to get it going like mad. Still there, yet a lot lot less. Odd. I guess this is a good thing.

I do have an awful coil whine one my EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked ACX 2.0 Item #:04G-P4-2974-KR Quite powerful card, but the coil whine takes all of the shine away. If you don't like noisy cards, DON'T buy it. I've got a replacement to see if it got better, same thing. Contacted their support and they said the coil whine is normal... I don't know, but the noise is way louder than fans... pretty unacceptable on my opinion. The fans aren't noisy, just the coil whine is really irritating by the way.
