970 SC ACX 2.0 the whine varies for me. The more graphically intensive the application the more whine I hear.... Noticed that it varied with game engines too. Anything I run with Unreal is almost whisper quite as opposed to something on the new CRYENGINE or even Frostbite 3.

+1 for the most accurate description possible for what I'm experiencing with my 2x 970 FTW on water.

greetings from Germany. Got me a GTX 970 SC ASX 2.0. And yeah, it's making noises: * 30 - 300 fps: a loud coil buzzing * 300+ fps (and especially at 1...+ fps) loud coil whining. * interessting that in 3DMark 11 the noise isn't that loud 0_o RMA already started for this one. Hopefully a pretested one will arrive asap *pray* 0:-) greetz ..::mpaschetnik::..

evga 970gtx 04G-P4-2974-KR Ok so I decided to run 3dmark (didnt need a benchmark to know how much ass this card kicks ;) ) and was running with my case door off cause I was trying to identify a sound (its a loud click like a loose fan, or HD sleeping). I did notice then that the card does make a coil wine, kind of like a mosquito. I mainly noticed it during the silent test in 3d mark. Not so much closed up with game sound going.

I heard mine whine for the first time today after owning it for almost 20 days. I was during the loading screen for FC4, as soon as I got to the menu screen it stopped. Very weird.

My 970 FTW has some noticeable coil whine at 250fps or above (mainly in menus and loading screens), but it's gotten way better and is barely noticeable now.

Yes but only whilst using Precision X. I have the stock reference card (non SC). However, as of today (received the card 5 days ago) I do have a horrible electrical buzzing sound whilst playing graphically intense games (Shadow of Mordor, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Lords of the Fallen). It's very loud and very noticeable. Edit: The loud buzzing sound is actually probably very loud coil whine. RMA it is then!

I had coil whine on my gtx 970's and my 290x has coil whine as well. I've tried different PSU's too, I think coil whine is just a thing we have to deal with right now. I think every PC component has to be top quality to even just lessen coil whine.

I got a GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0 two weeks ago it has NO coil whine, But at full load there is some electrical buzzing sounds coming from the GPU, You can only hear it if your ear is 12inches from the card. Cool thing is the noise seems to be diminishing, So its possible the noises we all hear will go away eventually.

That should be also coil whine, if that sound comes at full load. The coil whine of my last three cards got also louder, the higher the load was. I've get my fourth card tomorrow and i pray, that this time, the card has no coil whine ._.

Today i received my EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX2 and it does have noticable coilwhine. I choose to buy EVGA after reading this article where as it says : www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/67822-graphics-card-coil-whine-investigation.html .... With that being said coil whine was certainly a problem on certain GTX 970 and GTX 980 models, particularly those from EVGA, ASUS and MSI according to numerous forum posts. That fact can’t be pushed aside but some which have already been implemented. For example, in our conversations with them EVGA has readily admitted they experienced widespread problems with early GTX 970 shipments. However, they have since addressed these problems and eliminated the whining so all cards in the retail channel should be whisper quiet. Is this info about EVGA not true??

The EVGA support in germany told me the same, that they changed the coils on the newer cards.

GTX 980 Hyrdrocopper here. Got it two days ago- bad coil whine! When I upgraded from my 690 all I did was swap the cards out- same mobo, power supply, cables- everything the same. No noise until playing games or benchmarking. I hear ZERO from the card itself- the coil whine comes through all 5 of my speakers as soon as I enter a game. It sounds like a high pitched buzz with some static. When games load and show a 2D loading screen- the speakers are silent, then as soon as the 3D intensive part loads up buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. If my sound is at 0 or 10 the buzz noise doesn't get any louder or more quiet- it remains constant. Everything stayed the exact same when swapping out cards so my other hardware should not matter. ASUS Sabertooth Z77 mobo, Corsair AX1200 PSU, Creative ZxR soundcard running to receiver using RCA cables. I ran Uniengine Heaven 4.0 for 14 hours- it has not reduced the loudness of the coil whine as of yet.

I have to take it back, didnt test it properly last night as i didnt have time. I have now tested the card and run a couple of "Heaven" Benchmarks and its almost superquiet, only thing i can hear is some tiny tiny ticking noise that is nothing to complain about. Last night i used the same fan curve in EVGA Pres. as i did with my Asus GTX 670 that the fan runs at 100% at 70C. The EVGA ACX2 fan desnt have to run that fast, it kept my GPU at 70-72C and fans only at 30% wich is nothing and almost cant be heard. The noise i was complaining about yesterday was EVGA ACX2 fan running at 80-100% that makes some really high noise. Im now very satisfied with my stable, super overclocked, superfast, very short (only 24cm cm), and super silent EVGA GTX970 SC ACX2!

All GTX 970's (all brands) will have some sort of coil noise its just the nature of the card, It doesn't hurt stability, dependability or performance, So lets all just enjoy or awesome GTX 970's that EVGA has made for us. :)

My new GTX 980 SC ACX2 has some coil whine, but only when vsync is off. To be totally honest, my previous card (an MSI GTX 580), and the one before that (a 200 series card) had the same 'issue'. I thought it was a 'feature' that comes with these cards and I was just able to hear it, because I have an otherwise very silent setup.

Yes, I have coil whine on all four GTX 970 SC reference design cards I just purchased. All cards crunching distributed processing tasks. Computers run 24/7 and 99% GPU utilization. Most annoying sound. My previous 3 generations of EVGA cards never whined. Don't game. Keith

I have now done some more benchmarks with Heaven and 3D Mark and then ive played Asssassins Creed Unity for a couple of hours. I belive the ticking noise is now gone and cant be heared anymore :) So use your GTX 970 for a couple of days and burn it in before doin RMA, it might fix the noise.

you don't have it or you don't hear it? I'm asking this because the most videos on the topic at Youtube show the guys almost putting the camera 1-2cm beside the card. then they try to hear something coil whine alike, which is not very easy with all the case and cpu fans running much noisier. I've never seen a video showing coil whine with the camera at least 30-40cm away from the all-panels-closed case. of course there can be some exceptions but I start thinking that the topic is getting quite exaggerated. I'm getting my GTX 970 FTW next week and I'm surely going to investigate this in a real life usage scenario. I for myself don't care about coil whine which not audible 20-30cm away from the case with all panels closed.

Have gone through 2 GTX 980 reference cards, both with terrible coil whine. Worse at higher FPS. Definitely not the fan and present regardless of PSU. Hopefully the third card is the charm.... I hope that EVGA does something about this or they will likely be sitting with rooms full of RMAed coil whiners. I wish they would acknowledge this issue and tell us they are addressing it, although I did see something about the 970s that is questionably true based on posts since then.
