This guy! Still trying to justify getting something that he didn't pay for.

10 phase and 13 phase VRM's have NEVER run cooler than reference pcbs on air.. I don't care how to try to justify that, it just isn't true.

So reading all this I guess I am fine I have a GTX 1070 SC version. I don't want to mod anything if I don't have to and I don't want louder fans if I don't have to. So I should be fine correct?

On a side note everyone giving this guy a hard time for wanting a free $10 back-plate should give him a break. Right or wrong he purchased a high end product and if they can make him happy by giving him one I don't see that as an issue. It's obviously upsetting him. In my line of work it would be a great day to only have to give away $10 to keep a customer happy.

Thanks for your help,

You do not have to do anything you don't want. If you ever have an issue, evga will definitely cover your card with warranty.

I don't think people are harassing because he is requesting a $10 backplate. It is the fact he is throwing out unsubstantiated claims and demanding the company sends him something for free, when the claims are incorrect.

Thank you I figured I just wanted to make sure I will just leave it as is I trust EVGA as it would destroy their brand if they misinformed us. On the other subject I just saw people commenting on the price as if he was too cheap to buy one.. IMO just give it to him and be done with it.

They certainly do now that Nvidia caps GPU power draw....you must be thinking of the days when there was no power limit on GPUs...

If you decide to overclock at 112% power limit this card will fry without having to run the fan at significantly higher than normal speeds. You have shown 94c at the BACK of the card. This means the actual VRM unit on the front is running well over 105c if not more. You also show exactly the point where the cards are catching fire. It pretty clear the VRM at this section of the card it reaching thermal run away. This is exactly why you need the additional backplate to dissipate the heat via thermal pad.

Well EVGA has already stated the VRM's are rated at 127C and I don't think they're getting anywhere near that, at least on my card.  As far as the thermal pads are concerned, I'm willing to bet the one that goes over the VRM's on the front directly in contact with the cooler will have a bigger impact than you adding a backplate with a pad on the back of the PCB.

In any case, they'll send them to you for free.  Start with those pads and if you're not happy, buy a backplate.

LOL this is too rich.  That reddit post is mine, I also cross-posted here.  (can't post link due to my post count but it shouldn't be hard to find)

Not 30 minutes after I posted the thread here, bcavnaugh private messaged me: "You Could Have At Lest Posed what the Max Temp is, which I think is 102C You are causing more issue and problems on the Forum doing this, at least that is what I believe."

So let me get this straight bcavnaugh, you believe I'm "causing more issue and problems," yet you are quoting/reproducing my post here?

YES I Do! Their are to many Threads mixing up the two different main issues.
Any yes you are welcome as well.

Never has the 10 and 13 phase card run cooler than reference cards. The reference card has the phases spread out, where high phase card have them all crammed together. The closer the proximity, the higher the thermal output, since they are transferring heat across to each other.

Skip to 2:29 and then 12:33. Even without the pad fix and only a bios update (simple fan curve bump) the vrms are operating within spec. Also take note of what JayzTwoCents says at 12:33 in regards to the setup without the backplate.

Not to get off topic, but I was looking at getting a 1080. Any ideas as to when the cards with the fix will be available?

I own 5173 1070 black edition, which has no back plate.  No worries if you have the same.  I put temp sensor on back of card where the heat issues have been shown.  Temps never got over 65c in that area while running card at 100% load playing Overwatch.  I am using a Coolermaster haf 932 case which has good ventilation.  I have owned evga products for years, and continue to stick by their products.  Too many people making a mountain out of a mole hill.  Give it a rest people!!!

Note: Running power limit at 112%, Temp limit 92c, core clock +115, memory clock +300. using afterburner. Fan curve, no fan until 37c, ramping up to 100% at 90C.

This has been the most silent video card i have ever owned, and actually now have in 2 pcs in my home now.
