Thanks!

Now introducing the final cog in my war machine:

Btw, thats SIXTY ONE POUNDS being slung up and down that rail.  When the column is upright the weight of that head was reduced to 4 lbs (plus the friction of the dovetails) due to the hanging counterweight.

I was reading bacck through this thread, and came accross this old post. I had to reply, as nobody has corrected it and I hate seing misinformation about producuts.

Forgotton Also nickle is a mix of metals because of this it's nearly impossible to get "Pure" nickle, Silver or copper is another matter entirely.
edit 2: decided to add proof of this and reference what "Pure" nickle is generally used for in addition to how it would react as I stated. see link below

Nickel is a base element, which means unless it is used in an alloy it is pure. It might be difficult to purify, I don't know about that, but it is certainly an element, so cannot be broken down into other elements.

Your "proof" of what Pure Nickel is is actually proof that an alloy called Raney Nickel is not pure nickel. The link gives information about the production and use of Raney Nickel, a nickel/aluminium compound. Most watercoolers know not to mix aluminium and copper in a loop, so Raney Nickel would not be good for plating a block. Nickel, OTOH, is good, but only if properly plated (or a block of pure nickel is used) as it's inert enough to not have a galvanic reaction with most other metals.

As for whether it would flake or not. The EK blocks that had nickel flaking off them were, as I understand it, creating using an electroless nickel plating, which by it's nature does not create the same level of bonding that electroplating gives (I worked with electroplating some years back, so  I do know what I am talking about). Properly electroplated nickel would not flake off as it forms a strong bond. I accept that the flow of water would cause the metal to undergo wear and tear, but the same is true for any substance.

Thanks for the info.  I would love to learn to nickle plate, but I have enough on my plate as it is.

I finally finished reading the whole thread. Awesome job! I look forward to seeing what you produce for the SR-X. I'll be in the market for a block then :)

One gallon of resin, 2 gallons of sand.  Makes a nice thick, sturdy, waterproof basin floor.

Now some column to wall reinforcements, and it can be fired up and tested.

I forgot my phone at work, or I would have shown a video of my column "nod" to be within 0.0001" on the Z travel.  Going to work on those column to wall reinforcements tonight to lock them in place.

Also I was able to do a complete tear-down of the Z assembly (motor, motor mount, and milling head) in under an hour and make a few adjustments.

All the planning that went into the building, also went into the design with serviceability in mind.  I don't want any machine to be down this long again, but if there is a problem it can be fixed much quicker.

I would gladly supply the silver when I can afford it LOL. Just need to know how much silver I'll need and how thick it needs to be.

Ya I would send him the silver grain and shots if he has a furnace and the molding. And if he doesn't that's fine I have a friend I can put to work who has the stuff.

Industrial silver isn't at a bad price really 800 bucks for 25oz of industrial silver.

Don't think you have. Love the contrast. What did you do, hose it down after you got done with it?
Reminds me of what Martin used to do when he got done with making your Cable Extensions. That was before he got his own website.

Nateman, first things first.  Your blocks look amazing, as does your new mill.

I have always had a big interest in milling. Your work has somewhat inspired me to try my hand in it. Any suggestions for a noob on where to start?
