Every holiday throughout the year I get crappy music blasted at my house by really *bad language* neighbors.
Today just felt like the breaking point.
It started at 3:pm - when my wife, myself and our daughter went outside to have a small little bbq to celebrate the 4th.

I went to ask them to turn it down at 4pm - it was just two guys sitting in the yard with there horrible music on full - 30 + chairs sitting there though, for the later festivities.
They completely ignored me, so I called 311 - which said some cops would come- they never did.
Called again an hour ago(10:30pm) - said cops would take a look - still haven't - still bad music blasting, waking my 2 year old up.

Cant celebrate any major holiday, or even every second weekend as these neighbors do the same crap.
I couldn't get into my garage about 3 weeks ago as they deployed a children's bouncy castle in the alley blocking access. And their 5 regular cars, plus all their guests stole the street parking and I have to park 3 blocks away from my house.

What do you guys do to your annoying neighbors to have them use a little courtesy, or perhaps a little human decency?
- A brick to the head has been on my mind all day.

Most (around here anyways) have a 10pm noise ordinance. I found the best thing to do is not confront them at all, i mean dont even look at them and quietly go into your home and from a land line if you have one call 311 every 15min until you annoy them enough they do something. If your local police wont help find the # to your state or regional police and ask for help. If you can from your property set up a video camera(be discreet as possible) and record everything and take it directly to your local sheriff or town planners. Show them and ask for help to their face, people are more motivated face to face. Keep the pressure on them even if they say there is nothing they can do. Sooner or later they will get annoyed and do something to help you.

The reason i say not to confront them is they will retaliate, those type of people have no respect for you or the law and will make your life worse. Let the cops do there job.

If all else fails i know a guy. Okay thats a joke but the rest is my best advice.

They have a full setup of DJ equipment - makes it hard to beat with anything I have.
Have a local guy in Chicago that listens to the police radio and posts their calls on a blog.

They got my call put through to them at 4:50pm, but completely ignored the one at 10:30.

The neighbors finally shut up at 1:15am. Really sick of their crap.

Have you thought about finding a way to cut the power to their house? We had neighbors like this and my little bro and I would sneak over and switch their main breaker off, shutting down their power. Eventually they put a lock on their breaker box so we couldn't, luckily they moved shortly after that. We have nice neighbors living there now, that often invite us over for BBQ's.

The only thing asking them to turn it down will do, is let them know where the person lives that called the police. I would call the police every 30mins until they came out and tell the neighbor to turn the music down. If you live down wind from the neighbor, tell the police that it smells like someone is smoking pot. The pot could be gone before they showed up . The police should warn them to keep the loud music down or they could receive a ticket for disturbing the peace.

Just because the noise ordinance doesn't start until 11pm. It doesn't give anyone the right to create unreasonable noise until then.

If your neighbor is renting. I would try contacting his/her land lord about the loud music too.

I would also do what Wrinvert said. Record the issue and keep a detailed log (when it starts, when you called the police ect). just in case you have to take it to court. Might even see if other neighbors are annoyed by the loud music too. Have them call the police too.

I usually drag my Ampeg 8x10 cab and my 2 SWR 4x10 stacks outside and hook up my tuner/cdpalyer and give them some Earth Crisis for 10 mins and that usually ends it. I think they get the message that I don't like what your doing and I have more equipment then you!! If that doesn't seem like its loud enough, I have some back up EV PA 15/horns that I can add too.  :D

I had a friend that had the same problems he lived close to a fairground. He put up with it for 2 yrs then he had a great idea ! He waited till they all went to sleep (drunks) . Then he put his bagends on his front deck turned up his stereo and blasted them back for hours. they moved their tents and kept their music down.

If you live in a town/block/city that has a sound/noise ordnance after a certain time, first I warn them and ask nicely, if they keep it up and totally ignore me then I let the police deal with it.

A friend had a neighbor that would call the police on him for working in his garage at night (no air tools). We got revenge for him by sneaking over to his neighbor car and pouring a few liquid stink bombs down where it pulls in fresh outside air.

Common courtesy is so over rated these days. I agree with winvert and Msim. Sux they won't take consideration of your child. If they were reasonable you could simply have a conversation, and it would be resolved. Unfortunately that is not the case for you. I hope your able to resolve it, without further grief.

sound/noise ordnance's are usually what 10pm to 6 am right? If the jerks aren't early birds, just fight fire with fire, no such thing as a fair fight, play ur loud speaker at 6am for a week, just talk to ur other nice neighbors first or do this as a neighborhoods team effort. Cops show up, ur not breaking the rules and the cops would prob tell the jerks to grow some.

Noise Ordinances vary per city you live in. The one I live in has a limit in decibels for all times of day.

Here is my city's Noise Ordinance:

    Noise Ordinance
In order to maintain peace and quiet in our neighborhoods, the city has a noise ordinance.
For residential property, the noise level may not exceed:
    • 60 decibels between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.
      • This is the noise level of a dishwasher, conversation or ringing telephone.
      • Exceptions include the use of power tools and/or lawn mowers between these hours.
    • 55 decibels between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
A stereo that can be heard across a property line between midnight and 6 a.m. is in violation of the ordinance as is a vehicle that can be heard by neighbors between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. (this includes revving an engine).
Cars that shake the ground with its bass also are in violation if they can be heard (or in some cases felt) 50 feet from the origin of the sound.
Violations of the ordinance can result in fines: $50 for the first offense, $150 for the second and $250 for the third.

A good sound recorder and a Video tape of the sound recorder running and their obtrusive antics. To the city counsel at their next meeting might, just might, get the point across. But holidays are holidays :/  After all many have sown wild oats in our youth. Have you talked to them at all? The counsel can set an ordnance but not without proof. Sk

I dealt with my bad neighbors through sheer oddity actually, granted I live in an Apartment but they where always making noise while I tried to sleep so I come up with a brilliant plan, when they where up at about 3am and woke me up I got up, turned on my vacuum and and ran it along the ceiling. It worked lol.

Now as far as your's go, I have an idea, its perfectly legal, are they downwind from you? If so use your grill, clean it afterwards if your so inclined. Now pee in a jug, get your family that is willing to do the same and make sure they are downwind from that BBQ. Now poor that pee slowly onto your grill, that smell will drive them in doors and kill the party quicker than anything.

I'm currently dealing with this with a neighbor driving an obnoxious subaru that sound like its hauling at 100mph as he leaves our neighborhood. Result is this, my car is quiet under idle and I could quietly roll out of the neighborhood. Instead I roll out of the neighborhood at 7k rpm. Now he no longer takes off hella loud and I can sleep in. Sometimes you just gotta fight back.

The saying don't do to others what you don't like done to yourself goes for miles.

I don't suggest you do the same though. :)

    pyromania....but that's me.

I suggest calling the cops repeatedly. If that don't work, fight fire with fire (no, not pyromania....)

    We live in Chicago,
So unfortunately there are shootings all the time, so the cops don't really care about noise ordinance laws.
Might end up trying the sprinkler idea.
They usually start "testing" their music at around 3-4pm and then leaving in on till the early hours of the morning.

Might have to get the sprinkler on before 2 pm - as the turds set up their music right on the fence line.

I was really surprised that none of their children had accidents with fireworks - they sit around drinking and listening to Spanish music - including Spanish Elvis songs, and give their kids fireworks to run around playing in the street.
