Working on getting his original CNC shipped to me so I can get it up and running for personal projects. He's had it palletized for awhile. Working out freight shipping for it. :)

Speaking of which... its been what... 2 years?  Have you cranked out any parts yet?

It's been interfaced again but is currently in storage. I've got 3 simulators in shop at the moment and a deficit of space to put it. As soon as the simulators are out of shop and sent back to their owners I'll again have room for it. Currently have a Cessna 172 fuselage, a T-33 dual cockpit and a porsche racing sim in the shop. It's making for problems on space. I have about half as large a shop as I need at the moment.

I ran into that same problem.  I am building way to many machines to fit in my workshop, so I am selling my old car, and freeing up a space in my garage for a second shop, for an overflow.  More of an emphasis will be on wood/forging work in the garage, while my main shop will be more metal working/everything else.

That sounds like a good plan.

I actually came up with a radically new machine design that was too big to fit in my basement so thats when I had to make the final call to expand into the garage.  Fortunately the garage is attached to the house so the overflow works out.

I developed it from the bottom up, and I was all set to start the patent process when I realized that I just re-invented an already existing machine.  I will post that in its own thread when the time comes.  The proof of concept prototype did work.  Now just to tighten things up.

Thoughts on a K60 laser? Pondered getting a K40 to screw around with, but that cutting area is just too small even though there is an active modding community for them.

I honestly don't know jack about lasers.  But if it is a common laser that many people use and plenty of people mod them, then go for it.  This way your not trying to figure out stuff on your own.

Would love to see your finished 2nd machine ! You might want to use vacume instead of wasting alot of material for holding blocks. All you need is a vacume pump and a ballnose endmill and some o-ring material.

The second CNC is all steel construction.  Same platform (linear rails/ballscrews) but I took advantage of using dowel pins as well as bolts.  Keeps things rigid as hell.  Also took a shot at using servo's vs steppers.

Sadly I put it on pause since I haven't had the need to finish it.  I was building it because this CNC couldn't keep up with all the work I had.  Now I have much less work to do.  Been building other machines which I will post in their own respective threads when they are closer to completion.

A rule of thumb, always overbuild.... because you NEVER know what kind of odd job is going to show up at your doorstep:

Yes, thats a transmission Bell housing sitting on my machine.  As far as I know this is the largest size bellhousing out there.  Its for a cummins diesel type truck.  Friend is a gearhead and wanted to make some random hole  in a very specific spot to make a very specific adjustment without taking off the trans pan and emptying all the fluid.

This machine was designed to cut copper waterblocks, but it has risen to the task of cutting hardened damascus steels, and so many other things, now to include transmissions and brake rotors.

That is pretty cool Nateman, I have little doubt there is much that you couldn't figure out. I'm definitely interested to check out your other projects you hinted at. Whenever you find the time.

I think I have posted most of them,  The forge, hydraulic press, various knives etc.  a few other things that are still sitting in parts that may or may not get finished.
