67% ASIC on my Classified..............

Might have slightly something to do about not going over 1480MHz.

Yeah, that's why I'm disappointed.  I thought these were binned.  Why put 14+3 on a non-binned GPU?  Even if I put it under water, it's not going to do much better.

Temps.... water will make temps stable BUT it will not make them less than ambient OR even keep them ambient for long under heavy loads.

Example:
I have 960x55mm of push pull rad space to cool a 4790k at 4.8 and 1.26v with SLI 980 KP's and they did not do any better than having the KP's on air in a 23c AC controlled room with the cool air directed at them. NOW, I have yet to test them with my blocks under the same conditions which I am confident will produce 1550+ (currently can can do 1525 100% stable with 1.206v) or maybe 1575 with a lil' more voltage.

My point is ..... the Maxwell NEEDS cool to perform bottom line. Want 1650? You'll need around zero c with or without volts. ;)

If you can't run 8000 on the memory well ..... sorry. EVERY 980 (7) could run 8000 or better 24/7 will 100% visuals under a heavy load.

Re: GTX 980 TI Classified 2015/07/20 00:30:06 (permalink)
Hey all, So im at PDX 26 Lan in Portland  and I spoke with Joey from EVGA direclty about the "binning" process and this is basically what he said.

" Like Kingpin has stated, Maxwell limits out via temperature or voltage. Because the reference PCBS's are hard locked voltage wise and at 84c temprature, we do "sort" the GPU cores for the superclocked versions of the GPU's and then the very best overclockable GPU's are "binned" to be the Classifieds and the Kingpins. Even though they may have lower ASIC scores, we sort them NOT by ASIC scores but what we are able to stabile overclock them too and then put them in the appropriate models. So essentially, unless you do water cooling or LN2, high or low ASIC scored card, your very rarely going to go past around 1550 mhz core speed, even the higher "binned" Classified cards cards. In the end, its a silicon lottery, ASIC score or not. :"

For my needs, I don't water cool but i'm hoping my return to EVGA after being gone for almost 2 years is worthwhile, I had sheety luck with MSI and Gigabytes 980Ti cards as the G1 Gaming had coil whine issues and was loud as hell with higher fan speeds and the MSI didn't work outa the box somehow, it woudln't boost properly and was no faster then my 980. I've lost money in the process and time, so I'm hoping my first classy treats me right and just farking works at least but being able to get at least 1500 on the core with air would make me a happy camper.

I bet that I have the best 980 Ti classy ever: 63,4 ASIC !! -.-

Max stable OC: maybe 1481 with +50mV.

Could it be better? How can I receive a better OC?

What's the difference with the second bios?

My card arrived today. Nice design and quiet cooling.
ASIC is round about 70%
Is it possible to change the LED white into another color like the 980 Kingpin?

I've not tested yet. Much time is gone by shooting pictures from this card.
One thing is strange. The heat of the Backplate is able for grilling a egg with bacon but the GPU Temp is about 30°C in Windows and not over 70°C Ingame.

First: Sorry für my bad English

I have the same problems with my 980 Ti Classified - Increase of Voltage has no effect on max. GPU Clock
my max Clock is 1480Mhz on Air and Water

ASIC 69
Max Clock 1480 Mhz @ 1,18V -> not bad and better than my Reference 980 Ti ACX 2.0 ASIC 65
Stock Cooler is quiet and sufficient on this Voltage

BUT 1490 Mhz -> Driver reset on all Voltages even with Watercooling(tested until 1,34V than clocks decrease because of temperature (54°C))

Results: Higher Voltage are completely useless to reach higher GPU Clock and the Classified is for normal User with Watercooler senseless und a waste of money in my opinion compared to the Reference Design

Classified PCB is very good but GM200 scaled not with Voltage

This has been a known issue with Maxwell.  Doing research would have shown this ALOT.  I have suggested TOO many times that people looking for Air and Watercooled performance stick to reference cards, but NOONE listens and get upset when they get Air and Water cooled performance.  The Classified is very specifically set up for Extreme cooling and will not perform any better than a regular card on Air or water.

So, according to your statement, which option you recommend to replace my current sli 780 ti kingpin classified? I was thinking in the 980 ti Classified or in the 980 ti Hybrid, 2 of them of course for sli. I was waiting to see the new kingpins but the prices are way out of my wallet, and also didn't oc on ln2, dry ice and such. Primary gaming with all maxed out and some benching too. So which one you can recommend?

SOB, so after all this time and waiting, my brand new Classified has got serious coil whine issues  It does it in game and is really bad during any high framerate menu's and cutscenes. It's only quiet on windows desktop. ASIC score is 71%

Anyone else's have issues or does my karma just royal suck? Newegg is outa stock and i'm guess i'll just be getting a refund when I send in for RMA

Sent this card back to newegg and buy the kingpin if the coil whine is to heavy.
When i put my ear near at my card i feel the same but it is not more when i close the casedoor.
I think ASIC is out of this failure.

I had another problem with this card. I change from GTX780 to the 980Ti Classy and in some games like AC Unity the framerate drops.
40 FPS with Very High Details @ 1080p this is crank?
What is your temperature with this card. I play Project Cars for 20 minutes and the card goes not over 68°C (154°F) @ 28°C (83°F) room temperature.
I think this card has a handbrake included.

Good news, everybody! With minimal effort the GTX980 classified block WILL fit the 980ti Classified.

Caveats:
  1. I had to remove one of the mounting posts on the back of the waterblock. It's the one just behind the PCI-e connector. The good news is that those posts unscrew from the plate, so I didn't have to break out the mill!
  2. The memory isn't completely covered. It's close, though, and eventually I might just get a piece of thin copper sheet to create a small "connecting" plate, but for right now, it's good enough. See here:
  3. I had to use the backplate that comes with the 980ti Classified 2. The 980 classy backplate will definitely not work without some millwork. However, it cost me about $2 to get six 3mm x 8mm screws and two 3mm nuts, and it mounted right up.
Is it perfect? No. But it saves me $150 to order another waterblock (assuming we can find one that fits it 100%), and the 980 classy block extends out to cover those extra chips near the outside edge. Mine hits 42C running furmark with a 125MHz offset on the GPU clock, and idles at 28C with KBoost enabled to keep it at max clocks. I haven't really tried pushing it yet, but that's next.

My ASIC is 75.0%, by the way.

I happen to be sitting on 2x 980 Classy blocks right now, but I also have 2x 780 Ti Classy blocks on the way for my 2x 980 Ti Classys I just bought lol. You never did mention what your Vram temps were getting to. I would be interested in weighing the pros and cons of either using the 980 Classy block because it extends to cover the memory controller, or using the 780 Ti Classy block because it simply fits, and just put heatsinks on the memory controllers.

So... Do you have any vram temps?

LOL!  hahahaha.... these are not binned..  Once the core is on the board, it is not removed and sent to a different series. Get that idea out of your head before you start some silly rumor that is crazy like the rest of the silly rumors.

They don't test the asic of a core and then cherry pick it.  They attach it to the board, and then test it in a computer.  After that, it is considered binned.. the Classified never goes through this process, only the K|ngp|n.  They simply load the bios, test the card to make sure it works with the correct BIOS and then sell it for the Classified model.

Scarlet-TechThis has been a known issue with Maxwell.  Doing research would have shown this ALOT.  I have suggested TOO many times that people looking for Air and Watercooled performance stick to reference cards, but NOONE listens and get upset when they get Air and Water cooled performance.  The Classified is very specifically set up for Extreme cooling and will not perform any better than a regular card on Air or water.

if you could please suggest an economical (read: cheap but really entry level(?)) extreme cooling. off the top of my head i ran up $700+ for a pot, dewars, a few liters of LN2, isolation, DMMs, IR temp gun . . .  but having a 73.5% ASIC i think the card might be between a rock and a hard place - if you know what i mean - OCing ~1500 benching and boosting 1405 gaming.

There is no such things as economical extreme cooling honestly.  The best way to start is going to be LN2 Pots, Acetone, Shop Towel (Biggest box you can find), Petroleum Jelly (Squeeze bottle and big tub), and Dry Ice.  Dry Ice is easier to store and is cheaper to buy, and doesn't require dewars and such.  It will get you to -70 to start, and save you hundreds of dollars, until you realize that dry ice is no where near as cold as LN2 and decide to get the rest of the stuff down the road.

I have legitimately coated my motherboard in petroleum Jelly to protect it.  I need to even pull it off the test bench, and apply it to the back of the motherboard to protect everything.  it allows electricity to flow, but doesn't allow water (humidity) to get to the electrical components.

I am wondering if I should get a second classified or just be happy with a Classified and a 4995 SC+. Decisions.
