NVIDIA has just officially announced their newest graphics card from GeForce 600 Series. The GeForce GTX 690 is dual-gpu card based on 28nm Kepler GK104 core and is now considered the fastest graphics card available on the market. Prepare your motherboard — because it’s big, prepare your power supply — because it’s power hungry, prepare your wallet — because it’s not cheap.
If you ever wondered how it is to have two GTX 680 cards connected in SLI mode, but your motherboard didn’t have enough space, or your power supply couldn’t feed 400 Watts of power, then NVIDIA has just came up with a new solution for you. The GeForce GTX 690 will provide performance of two GTX 680s, will consume as low as 300W, will only take two slots and finally — it will cost you $999. Some may say, it’s insane to buy such an expensive card, but believe me, it will be capable of running any game with top quality on multiple monitors for quite some time.
So what is GeForce GTX 690? NVIDIA has packed it up with two GK104 GPUs on one board. It requires two 8-pin power connectors and will consume around 300 Watts (that’s more than your first rigs..). It will therefore provide great overall performance.
GeForce GTX 690 cooler is made of cast aluminum with trivalent chromium plating. The central fan housing is created from injection molded magnesium alloy keeping it from vibrations. Fan will have 3000 RPM itself, but NVIDIA claims it won’t be noisy at all. They invented new cooling technology called dual-water chambers. Card was built on twelve-layer PCB.
Card has imprinted GeForce GTX 690 signature, and when it is in use it has a LED GeForce GTX signature lightning up. NVIDIA has also released new technology called NVIDIA Experience, which will officially be announced on June 6h. It is cloud based PC configurations optimization trough sophisticated data centers. Idea is quite simple, GeForce cards will be connected to some external server, which will provide the best available settings for your computer. It will be optimized for best performance by controlling texture quality, tessellation, anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing. Also it will be a platform to keep your components up to date.

690 will probably be released once all the mainstream cards are out.  Like the 630,650, 660, 670,ect.  AMD will most likely beat Nvidea again to the dual GPU market, but hopefully the Nvidea GTX690 will finally out perform its AMD counterpart.

I don't see AMD pulling anything out anytime soon to even come near Nvidia's Flagship. Doing dual chips doesn't really count as being better. Watch EVGA do their 2Win dual chip ones lol.. AMD be outta luck again.

My guess would be the May to June time frame. I think the card will be setup with dual GK104s due to lower power draw requirements of this GPU. If the GPUs were binned based on power requirements, I think it would even be possible to run two at the same frequency as the single GPU card.

Prolly be a 3-4gb GTX660 2Win if they do one.  GTX690 will most likely be two downclocked GTX680 spec GPUs.  I still see about 4 months + until then though.

Well I'm still crossing my fingers for a step up to a GTX 690. If not, I can always sell the 680.

I image we'll hear more about the 7990 next month with the 690 soon to follow. The real question is if the GTX 685 or the GTX 690 will come first.

According to this site the 7990 is coming out in just a couple days, 4/17 for $850!!   Hmm what to do. Wait for 680 4gb or 7990 3gb? Im stepping up my displays to 7680x1440 so my 680SLI 2gb wont do. Trying to sell the 680s now so i can get the most for them while they are OOS everywhere. But i can wait too long without GPUs.

My guess, its either the the low low end kepler cards that have been readjusted and jacked in price to be the 660 and 670,

    or its the 690

I heavily doubt that its gk100/110/112, what ever it will be called, Nvidia is still cashing in on bending the consumers over with the 680's. Altho, I would be tickled to see the the real 680 be released, its just too soon, unless nvidia intends to price it like a dual gpu card or more.

To be honest, I actually want nvidia to beat AMD. If they do, AMD's GPU price will drop and I might buy an AMD product for a birthday gift since it's cheaper.

They already dropped the price of the 7970 by $80 down to $470

EDIT: Pretty much, it means you can debate if you want a superclocked GTX 680 vs a 7970 Lightning. Just last week it was $600. Now its $520.

Guess that means that AMD finally admitted that they couldn't compete with the 680 at the price tag that it was at, and had to reprice it according to how it performs against the 680.  Typical maneuver.  Now we'll see if that has a domino effect on the 680 prices and quantity down the road.

Very exciting year for GPU companies and consumers alike. I have a freind I work with waiting for a 680 to become available, with this news might be worth waiting a little and buying a used EVGA 680 and get a little off of the price. Hell might not be bad to wait to the end of May and see what happens. Lots coming down the pipe, exciting times .

Well guys, it looks like we might actually get an April PAPER release of the GTX 690. If it really is $699, that's only $150 more for a second GTX 680, not bad at all.

EDIT: By "4GB of GDDR5" it means 2GB per core right for the 690 right? How big is the performance difference from 4GBs to a single core GTX 680 just in terms of ram?

Unless your gaming above 1080p, 2gb of vram is going to be more than enough, that being said, anyone running 2560x1440 and above, or multiple monitors will benefit from more than 2gb of vram often, without mods. With mods, the 4gb or vram becomes almost crucial for feeding the gpus fast enough.

There is no way Nvidia is going to relese this card with 4gb per chip....nvidia is way too cheap to do that, 8gb on a card that costs less than $2000? hate to say it but not a snowballs chance in....well you get the point.

They really ought to do this, as the 690 is the card anyone running multiple monitors with ONE card needs to be running as long as they give 4gb per gpu, if they dont, then thats no longer the case.

I run at 2560x1600, and my 2GB GTX 680 never peaks its memory usage, even on max settings for many of the newer games I play. That's 4 million pixels it pushes just fine.

I'd really only recommend a FTW 4GB model over the 2GB model if you're running triple monitors at HD (1920x1080) resolution or higher each. That's 6+ million pixels.

I run 2560x1440 and it eats up anywhere from 1.8-2 GB sometimes.

Since its 2GB per core, but it's got 2 cores and 4GB total, is that going to be better than 2GB on the 680 or will it take the same kind of hit when you get up in into the 5k x 2k range.

Which games? The textures a game uses and how many of them loaded at once will have an impact on video memory usage as well as gaming resolution.

As for a 4GB dual-GPU card, it's still only 2GB per GPU. Each GPU needs its own working copy of the video memory, which is duplicated. So it's still 2GB total video memory. The 4GB for a dual-GPU card is just a marketing ploy.

So Surround Gaming 2x 4G FTWs SLI are still the way to go I am taking it? Over 2x 690s if they are 2G correct?

I saw your post earlier I just want to confirm I am holding out for the right thing haha.

FFXIV and Skyrim can eat up 1.8+ GB of vram easy between its bad coding and extra mods at 2560x1440.

Ah, yeah. Skyrim can be a card killer, lol. I remember the old Oblivion with a ton of mods back in the 6000 series days that would grind my system down to slide presentation framerates.
