Bruno747Unless your gaming above 1080p, 2gb of vram is going to be more than enough, that being said, anyone running 2560x1440 and above, or multiple monitors will benefit from more than 2gb of vram often, without mods. With mods, the 4gb or vram becomes almost crucial for feeding the gpus fast enough.
I run at 2560x1600, and my 2GB GTX 680 never peaks its memory usage, even on max settings for many of the newer games I play. That's 4 million pixels it pushes just fine.
I'd really only recommend a FTW 4GB model over the 2GB model if you're running triple monitors at HD (1920x1080) resolution or higher each. That's 6+ million pixels.
^^^ He's absolutely right even 480s can run 2 monitors with Sli, and the 500 series does well for the mid class and high class 500 series. 2gig 680 is fine for 2 monitors, the 680 isn't the best cards for nothing right now. Now I don't know how ell a 2gig would run on a tri-plex computer system, but these cards are powerful. I'm getting 2 680s from the Step-up program, 1 2gig card should be suffecient enough, and from what i've heard from most ppl the 2gig 680s can well take care of itself at handling 2 monitors at once.

2 cards in sli are better for sure unless you want to do quad sli on a mother board that doesn't support quad sli or if you only have 1 pci-e slot. dual gpu cards don't make much sense otherwise in my opinion
Agreed. There will be no dual gpu cards in my future, ever. 2 x 680's all the way.
Same here I agree on just getiing GPUs in just pairs or 1 by 1, plus i'd have to worry too much about overheating with dual GPU cards. Plus the Summers here can get over 110 degrees or over easily.

Doesn't it seem strange that this is being released so quick? isn't the 690 spose to be like, what the 680 was suppose to be? From all the hype wont it be extremely overkill on the 7900 series? Thoughts?
I highly doubt the 690, or 695 is being released. The 690 will probably be down-clocked on the memory and gpu frequency just to make it more stable. It will probably be a little on the unstable side dealing with 2xGK110 that utilize 4GBs per card, on small memory bus widths. Worst if it's a 8GB per card deal. Look at it from another point of view. 680s are basically an overclocked card at factory spec. It can't be overclocked much further from what I have been reading from other sites. 2way SLI 680s, 2GBs per card, will probably be about the same, or a tad-bit better than a single 690. 2way SLI 690s will probably have scaling issues to the point where you will probably utilize only one of two 690s. There's also the possiblity of having driver issues. That's my prediction for the 690s. More than likely, it will follow the same trend as the 580 3GB vs 2 way SLI 590 situation. Players could gain more, better performance per buck with 3-way SLI 580 3GBs, and have less herp-derps.
^^^^^ What he said.

Update 4: http://videocardz.com/322...-690-coming-april-28th The countdown has started. GeForce GTX 690 will be released by NVIDIA during GeForce LAN / NVIDIA Gaming Festival (NGF) 2012 in Shanghai, China on April 28th. It seems that our information that NVIDIA will release their newest product by April 30th was true. So this is even before Intel’s Ivy Bridge official announcement. This also proves all the rumors and leaks from multiple pages. I’m pretty sure that most of the reviewers are already testing this dual-gpu card as we speak. There is also a possibility that this may be a brand new GeForce graphics processing unit (like GK110), but that would be totally unexpected! ORB-Hardware confirmed that we can expect few NVIDIA GeForce cards in upcoming weeks – that includes GTX 670, GTX 660 and maybe GTX 650. Don’t be surprised if NVIDIA actually decides to announce more than one card. God there's so much hype around this it just doesn't feel right for it to be a 650-670, or a 690 even if you know what I mean. Everyone's wishing for a GK110. Also, wasn't Ivy bridge launched today? http://www.macrumors.com/...ivy-bridge-processors/

The countdown seems over the top and anticlimactic if what is being released is simply the expected iteration of the 690--a two-in-one version of the 680, but with each component card severely underclocked.
Perhaps, if what's being released is the 690, it's not what's expected--the 590 was not impressive and nvidia must realize that--or this is not the 690 and is instead something else (685, etc).
Has anyone seen a countdown like this from nvidia in the past, and if so, what type of product did it herald?

If this is a 690, and the price is only +200 from the 680 then I wont mind the somewhat lower clocks. I did see a blog that claimed the price would be $800 though, which would sure make me think twice. I kick myself for getting a micro-atx these days!

You're not going to get the same SLI performance in every game, so why limit your first GPU with something less than a 680? These will either be downclocked GPUs from the 680 or a new, slower GPU similar to what would be a 670 in the future. And since that's most likely the case, I'd rather have two 670s in SLI than a 690.

I dunno, kicking AMD when they are down is kind of a big deal. They don't have anything that can compete with the 680 on its own - put two of them on the same card? Yeah, sure, AMD could maybe respond with a 7990 from their side, but that they haven't been able to do it yet when the 680 is already kicking them around seems telling, to me.

Bruno747"most powerful in the universe" Yeah, there's no real prestige in saying "fastest single card" like there is prestige in saying "fastest GPU", because two of something else would always smoke it.

The alleged GTX '80 of the 600 series. http://www.legitreviews.com/news/12803/ While the GTX 680 has the performance to be successor for the GTX 580, its technology is on the relative level of the GTX 560 with a 256 bit bus, 2GB of vram and its compute power. The GK110 is the true technological successor to the GTX 580 with 4GB of vram, 512 bit bus, and a much better compute ability.

You don't know the price of the 670s of the future. If they reflect the prices of the 570s when they were released at the end of 2010, they will be $349 each. That's $698 compared to the $699 you're probably spend on a 590. Same price. Yeah, two 670s will probably smoke a 690, especially with a ton more overhead for overclocking (clock offsets).

khatru311 What about 2 690's in SLI? Unless you are benching, you are basically wasting your 4th chip. Quad SLI scales horribly currently(~2-7 percent). For gaming, the scaling drops off after tri-sli. I would rather invest 1500 bucks for 3 x 680's than 1500 bucks for 2 x 690's.

There's a reason the high-end system builders (eg: Falcon Northwest, Digital Storm, and Maingear, etc.) don't go beyond triple SLI for their top-end offerings.

SLI has always been fine for me. honestly if it would just come with 3gb vram each. I would probably give the 690 a try. but at 2gb... I need moar... but then again we dont even know what card it is right now. if for some reason it truely is the gk110 with 4gb vram? the moment evga announces hydrocopper, ill be spamming f5 ALL DAY LONG till I Get one...

Hmm. If it is the 690, i wonder if i could do a step up to that rather than the 680? Crosses fingers.
