Please tell me that this is a BIOS update or something required. I just received my card today, have been testing with Heaven benchmark and have had the black screen 100% fans happen 3 times so far... really don't fancy doing an RMA and sending back a 1 day old card and being without it through the Battlefield 1 Open Beta period 😞

My very first EVGA card, disappointing start!

It is not a BIOS update, as I said above it is a hardware issue and requires an RMA.

Ok, just let me join this black screen club.
I bought my FTW 1080 about one month ago and noticed the black screen issue from 3 weeks ago. I spent tons of time to figure out the cause and try to fix it.
I wish I had read this post from the beginning so that I won't waste my time.
For me, the only game which causes the black screen issue is DCS A-10C which is a flight simulator. I can reproduce this issue pretty constantly (85%): just fly low altitude near surface and do some gun run to shoot buildings.
Other games play just fine, I can play GTA5/Crysis3/Battlefield4 for hours, no issue, even with overclocked GPU core to max boost 2113.5.

So if it is a hardware issue, I think EVGA is better to make a recall.

We have identified this and can confirm that this occurs on a small number of 1080 FTW cards. We have found the root cause and have corrected it. If you are experiencing this problem please contact us directly.

Hello Jacob
I live in China, on July 28th I bought my FTW 1080 from JD  which is one of EVGA's online retailer in China.
My card has this black screen issue, and apparently I have already missed the refund time limit.
So which EVGA support should I contact? Could you please give me an email address or phone number which works for me from China?
Thank you!

I only just sent my rma card off today, should be with Evga in 3-4days. Since the cause has been found, I hope when they ship my replacement I get one of the newer 1080's with the fix.
I have my fingers crossed I'll get a decent card this time...third times a charm.

Edit: for those that are interested in what the black screen fan looks like in action, someone uploaded a video:

Yay! Kudos to EVGA for finding the fix before 15 pages of posts.  Got up to 9 pages and 3 weeks...acceptable well not really but still better than I thought. So I will definitely consider an EVGA card again in about 3 - 5 years. I knew this was a defect in the cards and not a power supply thing or a software thing.

Well, I just called EVGA and the ''fix'' that he found is an RMA.  You'd assume with the way this was said, you wouldn't have to send it in.

First EVGA card ever, wonderful.

This is exactly what happened with my card. First the black screen then fan spin up to 100%. Sometimes it will shut down by itself.

Jacob,

My RMA shipped yesterday, 8/30/2016 around 5:30 PM PST for a new replacement FTW card.  Will the 'fix' be on my new card when it comes next week?

Your post was a few hours after it shipped so I want to make sure the fixed cards were shipped before your annoucement.

Edit:  Jacob replied 'yes' via Tweet.  Yay :)

Jacob mentioned "a small number of 1080 FTW cards", so if it is hardware issue, can we know the serial numbers of these cards?

Let us know today how it goes.  I am curious if your card has the 'fix' or not.  If they just fixed it yesterday then probably not.

Jacob so I can proceed with an advanced rma knowing my next card won't be faulty? If it's gonna be faulty can I ask for a full refund without stocking fee?

So the specific problem that was confirmed, would it impact 1070 FTW cards as well? Such as GPU binning? I've had crashes like this with my 1070 but I haven't seen many posts in the forum about the same problem being experienced by users of my card.

I just got off the phone with them, according the Chris (Support Manager), all 1080 FTW cards received through RMA from yesterday forward will have the fix implemented. If you are experiencing the issue I would suggest contacting them directly at either their support number or e-mail to arrange the proper RMA for your situation.

Jacob said my shipment from yesterday, 8/30 @ 5:30 PM PST would contain the 'fix' ... but now Chris is saying today forward? I am not sure what to make of this now...  anyone from EVGA can confirm for me?  I can PM my RMA # if needed.

Sorry for the confusion, if you had an RMA submitted yesterday than it will be the corrected version of card, ecspecially if Jacob confirmed it would include the fix himself.

I thought I had dodged a bullet with 1080 FTW I received last friday, playing Alien Isolation, Ethan Carter and Batman Arkham knight with no problems. I fired up Metro Redux and 2 black screens and fan at 100%. Same thing with Overwatch. So it's an RMA? I was hoping it might have been driver/software related.

Just got off the phone with tech support and they are sending out an advanced RMA to replace my defective card.  Just got my confirmation email

"I am sorry that you have had to deal with this issue. I have seen a few people experiencing this so I am glad we have discovered a solution. I would like to offer you a complimentary Advanced RMA to get this settled for you."

I was ready to send the card back to Amazon when I read the post from JacobF saying that they found the issue and corrected it. All I can say is that Customer Service has been great, given that we've all spent $700 for a non-working card. I'll post back here when I get my card and let you guys know if it fails.

So yea, if you have this issue, which you probably do if you've read this far into this thread, Call Customer Support on the phone or send them an e-mail. Its not that bad, and there's nothing you can really do to fix the problem yourself, you need to RMA if you have the symptoms you've read in this thread.

My RMA was on Monday and it shipped on Tuesday.  Maybe they ran out of stock with all of these RMAs...

Just wanted to chime in on my experience here so far. I bought my first 1080 FTW the day they came available and had a defective card. Called EVGA support as soon as I black screened and they Advanced RMA'd me a new one.

Received second card and experienced the black screen and fans at 100% plus the new added white scan lines. At the first sign of trouble I phoned in again and was told they were working on a fix, told to try debug mode, see if it helped and keep in contact.

Called back in today to give my report and was told there was a fix and would get another Advanced RMA.

I ran dual EVGA 970s for a while and was totally pleased with them. Now that I've dealt with EVGA support and two defective cards... I actually like the company more. I know spending hundreds of dollars hurts, when it feels like a waste, but EVGA support has been the single best customer support I've ever dealt with.

Hopefully this will resolve all of our issues, and we can all game happily ever after.

Just curious, when you called the second time and they said they were working on a fix, about how long ago was that?  It sounds like they have been trying to fix it for awhile then.

I believe I got the first card on the 29th of July and it worked for about two weeks before it COMPLETELY died. Black screen and fans and no coming back from that. No mention of troubleshooting the issue at the time.

Second card came in on the 16th of August, and crapped out on the 27th while playing Deus Ex. Called them on the 27th and was informed they were trying to troubleshoot the issue, and basically to run it in safe mode.

As a side note, I've been stable, minus the white lines, by running in Debug Mode and using EVGA PrecisionX and setting the card's fan profile to Aggressive.
