Got asus z690 hero, 12900K, corsair ddr5 and cannot build because still waiting 4 corsair mounting screws because of socket 1700

Chip shortage yet cabnnot build due to missing screws

Ironic isn't it?

I got my Z690 Hero/12900K up and running now. I'm running a full custom loop and had preordered the EK Quantum Vector² block designed for the LGA1700 when it was announced. For memory, I took what I could get... a 32GB kit of Kingston Fury Beast 4800 CL38 which went into stock for about an hour at one of the 5 sites I was monitoring. Figured that it'll do until DDR5 gets faster/tighter/cheaper and stock vastly improves (de8auer was playing with an engineering sample of 6000MHz from Corsair yesterday).

Does that Maximus Board not have the dual offset mounting holes (whereby no special screws required)?
Curious as my Apex Board has these dual offset mounting holes.

I was under the asumption that all Asus Maximus boards had this feature.

Yeah, they do but I think the problem is that the IHS is a different height and therefore requires different standoffs.

CENS is working on EVGA Z690 Dark Kingpin with pre-release bios, but is rly solid. No weird glitches no hick-ups. Safe-boot button works flawless and fast,,.. Getting There.

Running i9-12900K & G.SKILL DDR5 6400MHz 2x16 kit,.. stable @ 5.4GHz OC on CPU & 7000MHz on RAM.

The scuttlebutt is perhaps December release,.. so keep your fingers crossed you might get the EVGA Z690 Dark Kingpin under the tree for Christmas.

Luumi and Biso will be posting some geekbench scores soon.

My MSI Tomahawk Z690 was a huge let down. LAN issues and saving the bios issues. Any change save and freeze. Drives me absolutely crazy. I cannot get gear 1 4000mhz cl14 to work at all. 3900mhz posts at cl14 gear 1. Ive seen the asus z690 strix a post 4000mhz cl14 gear 1 no problem. Pretty sure I actually got a bad board so I am returning it and getting the ASUS board asap its been ordered.

My Setup
-ASUS PG259QN, XG248Q
-Lian Li 011 Dynamic
-MSI Z490 Meg Ace
-10900K 5.2GHZ

-Artic Freezer II 360MM
-16GB Viper 4400MHZ
-3080 TI Founders

-EVGA 750 P2

IMC seems really variable on these chips, I'd not say anything is easy but sucks the board was garbage.

Well I hope eVga can get a motherboard out by at-least by mid-January. Otherwise I can just send the i9 12900KF back to Amazon before January 31st hits so I can get a refund.

Are you solely stuck on an Evga Board, curious as there are some great options out there!

Yes I am. I always had great experiences with eVga motherboards.

I just processed a return on an unopened 12700k.  Lack of boards that are interesting to me and DDR5 made me swap to a 5950x on a Dark Hero.  Very happy with how it runs.

Yes I get it...we get comfortable with what works and navigating the Bios...as said I faithfully used Evga Boards up until X58 Classified....think the CPU was a 980 Extreme (6c/12t)....but after trying out the Asus X79 Rampage Extreme ...followed by Maximus Extreme, also solid boards with ..imo...a better laid out BIOS...like you Im sticking to my success ;)

The evga Boards have those DIMM modules along the top of the Board.....this would be a total pita with my Loop, as I have a 480mm RX XSPC Rad mounted up top and its a thick bugger !! I need the space along the top.

I hope everyone gets THEIR DDR5 at some point.

They're going to be disappointed if they don't though. (hey, I short cut "though" to "tho" Most of the time...but figured I'd 'fix it' here ..there..and everywhere!)

It's not here, it's there. They just don't know their cars from their computers ..but put it there...as they're waiting.

Just put a 5950X machine together earlier this year.

I, personally, see no need for a 12th gen system.
If I wanted more power, I'd probably step up to Threadripper/Pro or Epyc.

Anyone really on anything from 5ish years ago platforms doesn't "need" to upgrade at all, as those platforms and CPUs (Ryzen 2000 series and Intel 8000 series) are still all perfectly viable in games and a lot of productivity tasks. This isn't really about what one "needs" as much as what one "wants" because there is a difference. Some people just like to have the latest things to tinker around with, myself included.

You sound like you're more interested in productivity tasks like rendering/encoding if your path would be to move to a slower IPC (instructions per clock) architecture but more cores platform like Threadripper or Epyc. Games even today just don't care about much more than 6 cores in the vast majority of instances. Hell, even a fast quad core with SMT (4 core, 8 thread) CPU could play the vast majority of todays games with zero issues. More cores/threads is beneficial to things like tile based rendering or heavy compute tasks, cores don't really have any impact on games past a certain point. It's all about IPC and frequency for games for the most part. For people mainly interested in gaming that's where 12th gen is appealing since it currently offers the highest IPC and the highest frequency which directly benefits gamers with high end hardware looking to reach more untapped potential.

This is "perfectly" said n explained......its about the speed ...coming soon...still waiting on my DDR5...have a pre-order in for some Kingston Fury 5200 C40.....its about all I can get my mitts on here in Canada....

What I'm seeing common on most forums is many 5900 / 5950X users downplaying this new Intel chip...whether it be heat...power consumption, price, availability of DDR5..latency of DDR5 (comparing it to current DDR4 is pointless and moot) etc....well many of us are "power users" :)
This upgrade is 9900k MXI-E to Alder Lake...do I "need to upgrade", absolutely not, I just "want" to ;) As like most Intel CPU's, its all about tinkering n OC'ing!

The 1200i is an older "testing psu", once this goes into my case w loop its all powered by my AX1600i

The 240 AIO is strictly for setting this up on my work bench..always do this first..make sure everything works, install OS, customize desktop, install my Apps...test n play for a few days, then disassemble and re-install in my 900D with multiple Rads...Fans ...custom loop.

The physical weight of the ATX Apex Board defines the robust (ness) ..lol of the components,,,unbelievably heavy for ATX (vs E-ATX)....24+0 105 Amps of goodness ;) A new Velocity 2 Block is on its way from Slovania.

Not much to say, my old rig was 9900K & DDR4 3600MHz CL18 so it does seem quite a bit snappier (don't try setting 1T timings though - it fails to boot). I attempted to run AIDA64 memory benchmarks but it keeps complaining about an unsupported "Alder-S" motherboard (and this is using the license that comes with the Z690 Hero and downloaded through Armor Crate). Apart from that, I've run a few 3DMARK and managed to jump into the HOF with a few (one in the top 10).

One thing I have avoided thru a few ROG mobo builds is installing Armory Crate.......dont get a "warm n fuzzy" feeling with this Asus Bloatware....maybe its getting better but sure a plethora of complaints over on ROG..

Not downplaying anything.
Simply saying that building a new Intel OR AMD machine after only 8 months on my AMD rig would be something I can't justify.

.... Hell, even a fast quad core with SMT (4 core, 8 thread) CPU could play the vast majority of todays games with zero issues.......

Ya mean like me and my little 3770k?
Most games actually do run fine...for now.   It's only with Cyberpunk that I get serious lag in certain areas around 30-50 fps, and that is only in certain areas with a lot of activity. And Cyberpunk pegs my 3770k at over 95%.  Heck, I could go out to the desert and get a silky smooth 70+.  At least with Alder, faster DDR5 eventually coming out, PCIE 5.0 and max ram of 128GB, I should be okay for about another decade or so.  Plus the fact that I can't install Windows 11, and there WILL come the day when a game is only designed for Windows 11.

It's just, at this early juncture, DDR5 is super-expensive and small performance boost isn't worth the price differential over decent DDR4.
Thus ever with new memory standards.

I almost got tempted in getting a DDR4 board, but EVGA has been nice to me, and this community has always been great.  I don't mind waiting for EVGA.  And remember that I'm using DDR3.   I'd have to get new ram anyways.  So I might as well jump a generation.

Nice looking hardware rjbarker, that's great you managed to pre-order DDR5 5200 C40 kit.

Tuning and overclocking DDR5 does indeed provide much better Benchmark results vs XMP profile.

I upgraded to Asus MZ690A a few weeks ago after reading the manual, PCIe lane configuration.

Asus was spot on with this board for GPU with active backplate, simply pull top M.2_1 heatsink and leave that slot empty, use M.2_2 slot for x4 OS drive and GPU will run at x16.

My card fits in top x16 slot with plenty of clearance, does not have any issues with DIMM slot latches, or the top x16 slot release black button.

Memory performance scaling is about the same with DDR5-4800 30-30-30-70 2T / Gear 2 and DDR5-6000 36-36-36-76 2T / Gear 2.

90% of people aren't going to be able to get the memory ICs in that pic though lol since only micron is available right now.

Dont forget what Board that is ;) .....its an Apex Board...infamous for OC'ing, Im sure I could OC my Toyota Truck with that Board!

I'm pretty confident you could throw just about any decent Memory Kit in that Board ...whether Micron..Samsung..Hynx and be able to play around....for my Memory OC'ing I generally start with the XMP Profile...then go from there....looking forward to mucking about with it.
Then of course after a few days you find the limits of your chip....and it all seems so anti climatic ;)

Very nice speeds.....P-Cores 52.....Cache 47...Memory speeds sweet!
What did you settle on for E-Cores?

I dont have an Active Backplate for my Ti.(thought about it)..but figured dont really need one as its not a 3090...so plan is to utilize both M.2_1 for 980 500G boot Drive and M.2_2 for 980 1TB Gaming Drive...from what I understand I can populate both those M.2 Slots and still get x16 out of PCI-E_1 slot....which is perfect!

I have another Sammy 500G SATA Drive (for utilities n crap) then my 6TB Media NAS Drive (WD Red).
Its the weight of that Board that blew me away....I think its heavier than my old Extreme E-ATX Board.

Im kinda hoping for the same numbers you got..all P-Cores to 52....E-Cores hoping for 40-41...Cache (Ring) 46-48.....as far the Kingston Fury kit, I know nothing about Kingston kits...I have either had in the past Dominators (never let me down) and the last decent DDR4 kit was 4*8G Gskill Royals 4000 C17.
Their simply is nothing available here north of the 49th right now...nothing..nada ..!

With this Daisy Chain Topography of this chip set / mobo, made the most sense to go Apex vs Extreme this time around (2 DIMM vs 4 DIMM), considering both OC'ing and in all honesty the price....the Apex was $850 CDN vs the Extreme at $1350 CDN.

As much as I was tempted about 6 months ago to ditch my 9900K for a 5950X, I knew Alder Lake was around the corner and really wanted to "wait n see".....besides, I think it would be a bit of a learning curve trying to OC that AMD chip...for myself OC'ing a new Intel chip is like Christmas AM!

Z690 Apex with i9-12900K only has 20 PCI Express Lanes, PCI Express Configurations are up to 1x16+4, 2x8+4.

The PCI Express Revision is 5.0 and 4.0.

M.2_1 slot supports PCIe 5.0x4 and or PCIe 4.0x4, M.2_2 slot supports PCIe 4.0x4.

The PCIe bifurcation & M.2 settings in PCIe slots for the bundled PCIe 5.0 M.2 Card are,.. when Add-on Card is installed in slot PCIEX(G5)_2, PCIEX16(G5)_1 will run x8 only.

So basically if you want to run single graphics card at x16 use slot PCIEX16(G5)_1, than only populate one x4 M.2 device in one M.2 slot, and do not install Add-on Card,.. this would be the 1x16+4 configuration.

This reason alone I grabbed the Extreme instead. Plus wasn’t interested is an add on card. Dimm.2 is bad enough.
