This has to be one of the most tragic and interesting things ive ever come across. Elana captures the eerie feeling of desolation and loss quite well in her photos and narrations. Riding her crotch rocket throughout the Chernobyl area she has explored a great deal on the long term effects of nuclear devastation One can only hope nothing like this every happens again near a major city anywhere in the world. http://www.angelfire.com/...dofspeed/chapter1.html Atomic Plant. ...Usually, on this leg of the journey, a beeping geiger counter inspires to shift into high gear and streak through the area with great haste. The patch of trees in front of me is called red - or 'magic" wood. In 1986, this wood glowed red with radiation. They cut them down and buried them under 1 meter of earth. The readings on the asphalt paving is 500 -3000 microroentgens, depending upon where you stand. That is 50 to 300 times the radiation of a normal environment. If I step 10 meters forward, geiger counter will run off the scale. If I walk a few hundred meters towards the reactor, the radiation is 3 roentgens per hour - which is 300,000 times normal. If I was to keep walking all the way to the reactor, I would glow in the dark tonight. Maybe this is why they call it magic wood. It is sort of magical when one walks in with biker's leather and walks out like a knight in a shining armor. This is the territory of the Atomic Power Plant. The geiger counter reading here is also 500-3000 microroentgen per hour. Only a very small amount of the radiation inside of there had so far escaped. Most scientists believe that more then 90% is still under sarcophagus. The remains of radioactive fuel inside has a name of "The Elephant Foot", it because of it's distinctive shape. About 190 tonnes of uranium and 1 ton of really dangerous Plutonium is still there, so if the big, bad nuclear elephant ever sets its foot out, we'll be in very big trouble... This is the final checkpoint. Protective radiation suits, a special permission are required beyond this point......I am not that curious. Our Pyramids The sarcophagus will remain radioactive for at least 100.000 years. The age for the pyramids of Egypt is 5,000 to 6,000 years. Each cultural epoch left something to humanity, something immortal, like Judaic epoch left us Bible, Greek culture- philosophy, Romans contributed law and we are leaving Sarcophagus, the construction that going to outlive all other signs of our epoch and may last longer then pyramids. From here, the shining cloud above the reactor must have been a staggering sight. Standing on the roof of the highest building in this empty town brings a feeling of being completely alone in the world - like this whole town is. The day after the accident, this place on the bridge provided a good view of the gaping crack in the nuclear containment vessel that was ruptured by the explosion. Many curious people came here to have a look and were bathed in a flood of deadly x-rays emanating directly from the glowing nuclear core. Grave of unknown soldier of Great Patriotic War, in unknown village, in Chernobyl.

All that can not be lived in and every animal there is screwed .. if it even lives long enough...

Read that story a few years ago. If you ever played COD4 you'll see several things in game that she has pictures of.

I just went through who knows how many pages of that article. Man, that is some creepy stuff, especially for me because i am only 16, and have only heard a few things about Chernobyl. It really puts it in perspective. Also, it is truly amazing how this catastrophe froze a massive area in time. Stunning.

I was googling for US sellers with "stalker Call of Pripyat" actually available for download versus purchasing from the egg or amazon and waiting 4 days. Lol,never know what gems you can stumble across on da interwebz

I hate to break it, but she didn't ride her bike through Chernobyl. She did, however, visit it on a guided tour while carrying a motorcycle helmet. These guided tours are around $70 a person and something I'm looking into doing over the summer, as it seems like a fascinating experience, not to mention the reactions you'd get when you tell everyone you've been to Chernobyl! The tours are completly safe if you go with a proper tour guide, as most of the radiation has been limited to just the ground soil now. The buildings however are deteriorating quite badly, however that's to be expected with nearly 20, 30 years of decay and lack of maintenance.

Yeah I read this a few years ago. Her story is fake, but the pictures are real. Like SovietKitsch said, she went on a paid tour for this, anyone can do it. It would be very interesting to do if you happen to be in that part of the world. I think she did a follow up to that artical call land of the wolves: www.kiddofspeed.com/chernobyl-land-of-the-wolves/ Also very interesting. Someone, a few years ago, actually got inside of the reactor and took a picture of the actual core, its called the "Elephant Foot" It has been said that it was so radioactive, they had to shoot it with a rifle to get a piece of it.

lt would be a very interesting place to go to, and to think they sent in the army just hours after the explosion to place concrete slabs on top of the damaged reactor with no real protective clothing and americaand the uk paid for the building to seal the reactor
