I think I will wait on this sound card as much as I like EVGA products, no surround 5.1 sound I will wait until they make another card for gamers. I still wont buy anything from creative labs they support for drivers or terrible.

I hear they have other things in the works. My guess it's the external USB solution we seen at evga hotel room during CES 2016.

Source

This is basically a USB solution slapped on a PCI-e card. External version would be rather simple to do. I actually do hope that they would do it.

Actually, from my understanding, the 2016 showing ultimately transformed into the EVGA NU Audio Card.  They are not separate product lines.

NU Audio is a USB device. There's a PCI-E to USB bridge chip on the PCB. It wouldn't be hard to make that external and that was the point.

 a more detailed review

https://hothardware.com/reviews/evga-nu-audio-sound-card-review

I wouldn't call that a detailed review. They went over the mfg talking points and compared a $250 sound card to onboard audio. What's next, is HotHardware going to compare RTX 2080Ti vs integrated graphics.

My guess is a lot of reviewers don't have the equipment to really make the most out of the card. The legit review talked about how the sound was coming out of headphones about half the price of the card and I feel it's pretty safe to say that the target is people who own really good sounding headphones.

Now I just have to figure out what qualifies as a really good sounding headphone

I have Sennheiser Game One headphones on my desktop btw... not sure if the soundcard would make much (if any) difference.

It has been enjoyable reading through all the threads.  I've been trying to find the manual. I keep getting sent to the audio or mobo, etc page. Can someone send me a link? Thanks.

I've been looking around for awhile for this type of sound card.   I have an older Asus Essence card. I've got it hooked up with a vintage Kenwood KA7100. This is an integrated amp - not an amp, an avr, or even an NVR .....This Kenwood was made way before HDMI was even thought of! I have it connected to  two pioneer speakers.  Great sound quality. The reason why I am looking at this card is because the Asus sound card has no driver updates available.  There seems to be a conflict with the software and Windows 10 on my computer.  My pc crashes every now and then. Not fun.  Before the card was installed, no problems.

I have a Sound Blaster Z in my wife's computer and a ZxR in mine. My speakers are the Creative Z906s hooked up to the optical port. I just got the EVGA Nu card Saturday and did AB comparisons and my ZxR is quite a bit better with headphones and the 5.1 setup. There is more bass and clarity with the ZxR and the ZxR get louder. If I were to recommend a sound card I would still recommend the ZxR for the price of 180ish bucks. I bought a sound blaster Z for 20 dollars and put it in my wife's rig and have zero complaints. I'll be checking out the AE-9 if it's actually ever released to do more AB comparisons. These are very early opinions as the Nu software is not mature yet but I'm not sure software can help narrow the pretty wide gap between the Nu and the ZxR.

Comparing to anything other than the last three would likely be a waste of time but I'm sure it will make for an awesome review. I'll sell you mine since they are back ordered.

since this is just a USB Audio Class device through PCIe, do you even need to install the drivers? does it show up like a normal USB DAC without anything installed? i'm curious to know if this will also additionally work in Linux like a normal USB DAC

that would make this card far more compelling

Did you run the software with administrator rights? I know some softwares can't write on certain folders/files without it, maybe it's the case here.

Yes, I did.
I also get these messages everytime EVGA Nu Audio Card Program is started:

Speaker runtime error!
SPDIF runtime error!
Mic runtime error!
Line in runtime error!

The "Save" Button in the Software is grey. I don't know why. Just "Default" and "Apply" are working.

Outside of launching the program as administrator, did you run the installer as admin.?

You might want to give EVGA tech support a call so they can get on it with you

I have the EVGA Nu audio card installed. I noticed that when adjusting the headphone volume up or down, I could eventually end up with a digital clipping sound... sort of a static. It was fixable by increasing the headphone volume in the EVGA app and decreasing the volume through Windows.

I'll try to post some impressions tomorrow. Headphones at this time are only Sennheiser HD 595's. I'll try my Audeze LCD-2's and Sennheiser HD 660's tomorrow.

I know it's still early but I'd really like to know how it compares to the Sound Blaster AE-5 and Zxr.  Sound Blasters without a doubt pack more features (I'm actually slightly concerned that the Nu Audio's software looks rather bare), but what really matters is pure audio quality.  I just want to know if the Nu Audio is going to provide a clear and noticeable step-up over Creative's mid and high-end cards.

I've got an unopened AE-5 sitting on my table right now, and I'd really like to get a proper comparison before I install it and void it's 'new' status.

It really depends on your needs / usage in the hardware and wants in the software.
As the product software matures they will hopefully listen to the users feature requests and try to fit some of them in.

Difference meaning better. Of course the card this card supports 5.1 output via optical so I am not talking about channels.

Hi Jacob,

A simple question, if you don't mind.

I have read this forum and tried to gather from the posts and the specifications (and the complete lack of a downloadable manual for the NU Audio) what the S/PDIF out actually supports. It does not go any further than to say it has an 'Output Configuration' of '5.1 Digital via S/PDIF' and it bears the label 'TOSLINK Passthrough'.

Can you shed a definite light on this and explain what it actually does?

- specs state it supports up to 192kHz, 24bit. This is only for 2 channel audio LPCM?
- does it support Dolby Digital and DTS passthrough from a suitable source, like the label suggests?
- does it support Dolby Digital (Live) and/or DTS (Connect) encoding of discrete 5.1 audio channels?

I find the Nu Audio interesting as a headphone oriented sound card to use for hi-res audio and a nice quality headphone (I am using AKG K-712 and Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 250 ohm over here with an external DAC+AMP), but to be frank I can get that kind of quality for less; Creative AE-5 or Z, or even a modest Schiit stack. It then boils down to what else it can do; for example for gaming and entertainment (movies, not having AC-3 or DTS suitable for passthrough).

I have been using Dolby Digital Live / DTS Connect over TOSLINK for many, many years now (nForce 2 SoundStorm, C-Media 8788, now Realtek 1150) with my faithful Yamaha v630 (no HDMI) AVR that still sounds amazing after more than a decade. Looks like it will be going strong for another decade, so no I am not willing to invest in a new AVR just for a few connections and 'standards'. I am looking for a reliable sound card replacement that does the same, and simply works in Windows 10 without any tricks or dodgy drivers or resource consuming 'management panels' or excessive lag/latency. High quality analogue of the Nu audio is a great value proposition but IMHO it needs a lot more to be competitive (and no, I do not mean flashing RGB strips on the outside ;-) ).

In short: does EVGA Nu Audio have Dolby Digital Live and DTS Connect?

No Dolby Digital Live or DTS connect support in the software. Not sure if Dolby Atmos (windows store app ) would give you that or not.

High quality analogue of the Nu audio is a great value proposition but IMHO it needs a lot more to be competitive (and no, I do not mean flashing RGB strips on the outside ;-) ).

In short: does EVGA Nu Audio have Dolby Digital Live and DTS Connect?

Lol, I have no idea about half the stuff you're talking about there, which makes me wonder if you might be more suited to high end gear like Burson which can cost thousands of dollars, as opposed to maybe expecting similar performance and features from a $200 sound card. Again, I am a long way from being an audiophile, so if I'm out of line, please accept my apologies, it's not intended to be offensive/defensive or combative.
