Wondering if 3060 is free of this issue?

So they are replacing the 3090s with v1.0 cards ?? If they blow up

Seems like it. Not sure how much 0.1 stock is circulating around still.

I'm hoping at some point they come out and announce a recall or something for 0.1 card holders. Rather not have to wait until my card detonates while playing something within the warranty period.

how do you know if you get a 1.0 vs previous?  Are only 1.0s being shipped new at this point?

I want to correct myself - I don't know for certain that people are only receiving 1.0's as their replacement from an RMA - but from what I've noticed just reading these posts, people seem to be getting 1.0's instead of older 0.1's.

The version of your card is written on the board where it mates up with your motherboard.

Yeah and actually it is not just the New World game regarding the first revision 3090 cards, some are giving it up playing other games like mine did. I am sure the New World game though somehow can accelerate the issue and is why many reports seem to be coming from that game.

If yours breaks playing New World, I would call EVGA and ask for a 1.0 card.

Just received RMA'ed 3090 from their special program. I can confirm it's brand new, sealed card with Rev 1.0

Did you do the Regural RMA? Or the RMA where you pay for them to send it first.

I just paid to do a cross ship and replace my card after 3 video crashes in a row playing ff14 at max settings.

Yeah my card still works but it now crashes a lot (compared to last month)

I just want a working card.

So yup …. I was wrong just call and get an rma if the card is crashing. and before anyone accuses me of not doing a reinstall of drivers… I poped it in my second rig and did a clean Windows install same deal.

I can play for a few hours then crash blank screen happened in any game.

Even tried different monitors

he just started RMA

I started RMA on Friday and they marked is as special case, which might mean they will send me a new card. they have yet to ship card to me yet. I have had two rev 0.1 that had issues and asked about 1.0 rev.

Yeah process just started. To be clear I don’t care if it’s new. I want no crashes. I got bounced from my dungeon group twice.

It was done with Standard RMA procedure but got approved by 3090oc@evga.com program.

Can't conclusively fix a hardware problem via software. Some other emergent trigger could always be discovered.

If it fails, RMA it. It is a hardware failure.

it doesn't take a year to get another card through RMA... it takes a few days

So, you would rather wait until the end of the universe for a driver to fix this hardware defect?  Don't hold your breath.

It took me exactly 3 days to get my card. I did cross ship and second day air. (had paid for it in advance when I bought my original card in case something happened). Looks like I got my monies worth.

Can't conclusively fix a hardware problem via software.

Sure you can.  GPU's are software/firmware controlled devices that would literally self destruct in minutes if they weren't properly controlled.

Now, if they can be fixed while still meeting performance specs, that is another question.

EDIT: Please note that I am responding to the statement "Can't conclusively fix a hardware problem via software", taken as being a single case where the design of the hardware may produce problems in certain situations.  Software fixes are done all the time in all sorts of hardware, in response to hardware problems.

I disagree. These cards have been dying in different random games (and while browsing the net) since November 2020. As I said, you can't conclusively fix a hardware defect using software, because emergent triggers can always be discovered to prove the fix not fixed.

Software and firmware is designed for a product which meets specifications and doesn't contain random defects. Random defects are the exception and are covered by a warranty.

It's fine that you disagree, it's just an opinion that neither of us are able to authoritatively debate.

LOL.  Ok buddy.  Sure.

Obviously they fix manufacturing defects, by fixing them.  But I have a feeling it's a hardware design issue, and that can sometimes be worked around in software.

It seems no one remembers when furmark melted gpus and now the nvidia driver can detect it and thus limiting gpus from going supernova and killing themselves. I am with you Kev. I would wager this is what New World is doing as well. Has efficient code that can make the gpu spike to an abnormal load scenario and pop goes the gpu.

Thanks, yeah just to be clear, I mean any programmed code running on / controlling the GPU - bios, firmware, driver, etc.

You can't fix every manufacturing flaw and design defect via firmware.  That's the flaw in your thought process.  You can't fix physical defects with software.

Re: EVGA 3090 owners - do NOT play New World game right now as it might kill the card 2021/10/13 13:46:17 (permalink)
Unfortunately this is a very complex problem that we all miss the critical data for it. Those with rev 0.1 definitely have a higher risk hardware, and I tend to agree on the side of getting it replaced if it misbehave asap. The latter are reported higher quality, just knowing that new world seems to be the new furmark should be enough to be very careful with it. I won't risk my 3090KP even if I have replacement, and also even with the power delivery it has, it just doesn't make sense. If I play the game it will be when we have a definitive answer why they do fail.

Everything else is speculation, and yes firmware/driver can fix hardware issue, because to me some of it seems to be firmware management issue as well.

Play Russian roulette with a shotgun is what it is when you have a 3090 with new world today, and soon they will find a way to fix the issue whatever it means (lower perf for the game or they figure out the exact trigger scenario and fix it).

Save your cards, don't play the game, it might be just perfectly fine and just need a firmware fix.
