Here is ASUS' top of the line LGA2011 motherboard targeting the gamer-overclocker market, the Republic of Gamers (ROG) Rampage IV Extreme. This board offers all the expansion room and connectivity you'll ever need, plus a wealth of nifty features that help overclockers and ease incremental upgrades. To begin with, the Rampage IV Extreme employs a strong digital PWM circuitry that supports heavy voltage-assisted overclocking with Vdroop control.

The LGA2011 socket is wired to eight DDR3 DIMM slots (two per channel). CPU and memory VRM areas are located along three sides of the socket, all cooled by heatsinks that are connected by heat pipes. These VRM heatsinks share heat with the one over the X79 PCH, which is actively cooled by a fan.

Expansion slots include four PCI-Express 3.0 x16 (red), of which two are x16-capable, and all are x8 capable, one PCI-Express 2.0 x4 (black, wired to the PCH), and an x1 slot. Storage connectivity includes four each of SATA 6 Gb/s (red) and SATA 3 Gb/s (black), and one eSATA, and a power-eSATA (unknown datarate). There are eight USB 3.0 ports (four each on the rear panel and front-panel headers). Surprisingly, there's only one gigabit Ethernet connection, the other connectivity option is Bluetooth, which plays a key role in some of the ROG-exclusive features such as ROG Connect. For once, ASUS did away with the Creative X-Fi soft-layer for its audio and the solution is pure Realtek ALC898 8+2 channel HDA codec (with Realtek driver).

Where do I even start with the toys overclockers get with this board? OK, first, the LGA2011 socket is designed in such a way that its Intel-spec retention bracket can be replaced by a custom ASUS-designed one, that modifies the cooler mount holes to make the socket compatible with LGA1366-ready coolers, so you can carry on with your expensive LGA1366-ready water-block. Second, there is a strong VRM that's backed by diagnostic phase and temperature LEDs, voltage direct-measurement points, and a EPU chip that marshals the power phases. There is redundant BIOS (in separate socketed serial EEPROM chips), with ASUS ROG-exclusive UEFI firmware. Thirdly, power is drawn, apart from the 24-pin ATX and 8-pin EPS, by a 4-pin ATX (CPU power) and a 6-pin PCIe, so electrical stability is maintained. The ROG connect feature lets you monitor and overclock your board from Bluetooth-enabled smartphones (hence the Bluetooth controller).

To top it off, every Rampage IV Extreme packs a free copy of Battlefield 3 Special Edition (bundles Physical Warfare and/or Return to Karkhand DLC(s)).

I have a couple of the ROG boards.  This might be stupid, but on my other boards, there are two molex power plugs for extra juice for the PCIe cards.  Is one not needed now?

id be a little worried about replacing the retention bracket on that board

i also want to see how this board compares to the EVGA boards 100% poscap power delivery

nice board though! its gonna be insanely expensive (saw a rumor saying 350+ for the board)

You are right about that heatsink. But hopefully the revision that ships has a better, fan-less, heatsink. But it's not a deal breaker for me. There are so many good X79 options, I'm gonna have a hard time deciding.

I bet this board does 4 way SLI. It looks like it would, if you use 8 expansion slots. Notice the top slot is right in line with the bottom of the I/O panel of the MB. No wasted expansion slots is awesome

I think EVGA's new POSCAP implementation is taking a ton of space on the board and that's why they couldn't use all 7 slots in Classified and FTW versions that we saw so far. I'm very eager to see how that choice affects overclocking capabilities, power usage and overall stability and durability. Still, I really like that EVGA is taking an initiative here.
Anyways, this ASUS Rampage IV looks really nice but too busy. I don't like the SB cooler. That size of a fan will be loud and will start whining after a week. They should know better. Also, I don't understand the need for so many heatsinks and heatpipes.
The other thing I don't understand is the need for 8 DIMM slots expressed by many around here. I don't know any game that may possibly need even close to 16GB RAM; so why do gamers care about 8 DIMM slots??? Just to have it?? Just because they know X79 can support 8 DIMMS and they want it all??

The biggest thing for me is the inclusion of a third party SATA controller for the extra 2 ports. It may sound lame that it's a big deal to me but, this way I can keep my 6 Drive RAID 0 array and still have a port for an HDD and another for a DVD Burner, all onboard. So there is no need for an additional RAID controller card. So this board could support my SATA configuration plus 3 way SLI and a sound card. Or even 4 way SLI from the looks of it.

I agree about the fan, that's gotta go

I think that would still be needed depending on the cards drawing power across the PCIe lanes. That really won't change all that much. I would still have one handy just in case. Until stated otherwise I tend to be a bit more conservative with my hardware.

Me too; this is how the PCI-E slots should have been arranged on the X79 Classified.

The one thing I like about this board is that the top-most PCI-E 16x slot is set where the top expansion slot would be in a case. This would make the board useful for 7-slot cases with 3x GPUs and optionally one more single slot card such as a sound card. The board would also have 8 or greater expansion slot cases covered for 4x GPUs. Ideally the EVGA boards would have a similar slot layout.

Nice!  I can't wait to see full reviews of these X79 motherboards.  They're looking very nice.  I'm most interested in Gigabyte's G1.Assassin 2 though.

Yup, I would think so too.  I mean, this is THE board for enthusiasts.  For people running 2-4 cards.  I can't imagine why they would pull those molex connectors off the board now?  I run 3 580s and am like you....conservative with my items.  I don't want my 24pin connector melting like the pics I have seen.

Anyone have any ideas why there is NO molex connector?  I didn't see one on the EVGA x79 Classy either.   Actually, I think I see one by the last PCIe lane at the bottom?

It looks like instead of a molex, they added a 6 pin PCI-E connector directly on the motherboard. It's right above the first PCI-E Slot, next to the I/O panel. I'm pretty sure this gives the PCI-E lanes additional power.

For real, I was so looking forward to the X79 Classified having this exact layout. Now with no NB to cool with a large heatsink, it should be easier to do this, you would think. And with EVGA using the POSCAP capacitors, it would seem even easier because they seem to require much less components and traces on the board.

Thats a sexy board, now to decide on which brand to go with.
    EVGA ASUS or Gigabyte hmm.

Also considering on how they say this board will release with BF3 im beginning to think that LGA2011 will be released in Nov/Dec?

I still prefer the EVGA solution along with the added value of superior customer service and support.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

    Just a little close there

btw, I love how they show off boards like this and don't even take the plastic off the heatsink
