With a CPU cooler, RAM and their high-rise sinks and all the dual-slot graphics you can fit; how can any of you guys still see the mainboard to be so superficially concerned with how they look like? wjerla LGA2011 will get 22nm when Ivy Bridge E comes out, probably at least a year from now or so. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think there are any regular Ivy Bridge chips announced for LGA2011. Ivy Bridge is Ivy Bridge, there is no regular; although 22nm parts will show up in all sockets eventually so you're right on that front. The templated model is the largest die, the 12-core variant meant for Xeon E5 series in which we'll never see as an i7 because there is no market projected where AMD would push more than an 8-core at less than $300 in the next 2 years anyway. Intel will milk quads in mainstream and 6-cores in high-end as long as AMD can't keep up. Maybe we'll see a $999 8-core in X79 through Ivy Bridge-E, maybe not. We know LGA1155 will see an i7-3700K 22nm as another quad with HT, and I suspect its stock frequency is 4GHz to account for the rumored performance difference between 2600K.

I hate motherboards with tiny, loud fans. Do not want. Also, for such a high-end board, it has so few POSCAP capacitors.

hale88 so basically the ram kit from LGA 1366 won't work with the LGA2011? this is so disappointed. They should do something like that :( The way I understand it, our RAM is compatible, it's just that if we install 6 sticks (R4E) we will only be using dual-channel? And if we install only 3 sticks we will only be single-channel - now that is a problem. You could also buy another single stick (or two in the case of 6->8) of the same to make your set, if they still sell it. It looks like I am SOL on my Mushkin Redline ridgebacks (CL7). Yeah, I may be buying a new set of RAM now for my new mobo. But on the bright side, have you looked at prices lately? Pretty cheap. Hey, that made me think about it, you know how memory prices are so volatile (pun)? Perhaps it's a good idea to buy the mem in the next week or so to avoid the price increase caused by sudden demand for the new purchases when X79 comes out.

I was always under the impression that "dual", "tri", or "quad" channel was determined by the memory controller and not by the memory DIMMs themselves (except that capacity and timings need to be compatible / equal). I was also under the impression that the "dual", "tri", and now "quad" channel kits were more or less just "convenience" features (and also encouraged you to buy more memory) and helped to make sure your memory matched and would run in multiple channel configuration but these kits weren't required for it.

From everything I have read, there is no difference between the DDR3 memory. If four identical DDR3 memory sticks are installed in the appropriate memory slots, the IMC will run in quad-channel mode.

tamerlee Two sets of dual channel memory will still run in dual channel mode. You have to actually have quad channel memory to run them in quad channel. That said, the vast majority of people couldn't take advantage of quad channel. Who told you that non-since? Geek squad at bestbuy?: wjerla I was always under the impression that "dual", "tri", or "quad" channel was determined by the memory controller and not by the memory DIMMs themselves (except that capacity and timings need to be compatible / equal). I was also under the impression that the "dual", "tri", and now "quad" channel kits were more or less just "convenience" features (and also encouraged you to buy more memory) and helped to make sure your memory matched and would run in multiple channel configuration but these kits weren't required for it. Thats the way it is. You dont need to get a quad channel memory kit. 4 stick of the same ram will work. The only issue the timming and speeds have to be the same. The memory controller decides what the ram runs in and how fast. The ram just has to be at or above JEDEC spec to be sold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM. http://en.wikipedia.org/w...e-channel_architecture It is not required that identical modules be used, but this is often recommended for best dual-channel operation. It is possible to use a single-sided module of 512 MB[3] and a double-sided module of 512 MB in dual-channel configuration, but how fast and stable it is depends on the memory controller. If the motherboard has two pairs of differently colored DIMM sockets (the colors indicate which bank they belong to, bank 0 or bank 1), then one can place a matched pair of memory modules in bank 0, but a different-capacity pair of modules in bank 1, as long as they are of the same speed. Using this scheme, a pair of 1 GB memory modules in bank 0 and a pair of matched 512 MB modules in bank 1 would be acceptable for dual-channel operation

HalloweenWeed Kittins, are you considering the R4E, or another X79 board? If my budget is up to it, I am hoping it it will be in the same price range as X58 was... I can keep my hopes up right? Honistly The R4E is a excellent looking board. I will like to see how it performs and what problems come with it before i buy though. I seem to have bad luck whenever i jump on a product shortly after release. My big thing is i would like to use my current case... However I have yet to see a X79 board with 8 Ram slots that will fit into a standard ATX form factor and i doubt i will ;-; I would not care if it only had 2 PCI-E Slots since that's the most i would want to run card wise. I don't know if i want to go down to 4 slots of ram after having 6 for so long. I am also waiting to see if EVGA release anything more case friendly. The standard X78 should be ATX if i was informed correctly. Truly, everything depends on if i am still employed by the end of the year. ._.

No, there isn't much to prove other than no typical application can take advantage of tri-channel, let alone quad-channel. Quad-channel is great for servers, but trivial for a typical user. http://www.tomshardware.c...7-Nehalem,2057-13.html

hale88 so basically the ram kit from LGA 1366 won't work with the LGA2011? this is so disappointed. They should do something like that :( Intel's bottomline rarely has anything to do with our convinience, so don't get upset if they aren't compatible; it is not like we have to upgrade, that will always be our choice -- unless your incomes depends on this upgrade. As for the RAM, that depends. The default support for Nehalem-E (Bloomfield) and Westmere-E (Gulftown) was DDR3-1066 at 1.5v (though the IMC could take up to 1.65 sustained). Sandy Bridge-DT came with the same spec default voltage but at a higher speed of DDR3-1333, while the spec for LGA2011 systems is rumored to default at DDR3-1600 with the same voltage 1.5v. So if you have three sticks of some speed that can run at 1.5v, get a fourth equivalent stick preferably by the same manufacturer to reduce the risk of incompatibility and call it a day. But if you RAM manufacturer specs state +1.65v or aren't available ofther than a triple-channel kit, yeah then you have just triple-channel and no quad-channel. tamerlee I hate motherboards with tiny, loud fans. Do not want. So change the fan. The chipset is just a southbridge and dissipates as much heat as a single BGA Vram chip on a video card; the fan may only be there for liability. Not saying waterblock, just some other piece or copper; bigger fan if you want to. tamerlee The vast majority of people couldn't take advantage of quad channel. So a vast majority of people wouldn't benefit from a faster program install or load times? That's what I enjoy from my triple-channel DDR3-1280 (30.7GB/s) versus the dual-channel DDR2-667 (10.7GB/s) from a previous build. In fact I know plenty regular folks that would, but there are no cheaper dual-cores for LGA2011 branded as "Core"; however there are Xeon E5 variants that are dual-core...

I'm disappointed that this motherboard lacks one of the audio chipsets used on their Xonar DX. I would really like high quality sound through USB, and while Gigabyte's X79 G1.Assassin 2 has such a feature, it uses a Creative X-Fi chipset which my headset supposedly doesn't like.

I've had fairly good luck with my, Rampage III Formula, was very disapointed in the SATA III support, hope they do well with this one. Look at the EVGA Z68 boards, I think EVGA is short two SATA ports that others have totals of eight, but they may have just decided not to use the Marvell controllers that didn't work on X58 boards. Marvell 9128 controllers just aren't there yet. ASUS does have nice looks and features other than that. I wish everyone a lot of luck on new designs.
