Dabadger84Nike_7688Dabadger84So you're doing really thin pads between the plate & components? Results should be interesting indeed. All these complaints about hot Temps specifically on the 5800x are making me want to steer clear of it, so for now I'll be waiting on the 5900-5950x to grace us with their presence at MSRP ($549/$799)My brother just got a 5800X. He paired it with a Noctua NH-U9S chromax.black. I know that's not the most powerful air-cooler out there, but I can tell you he has nice airflow in his case and it was running quite warm. He had it stock clocks and with or without PBO running, it was hitting 90°C in several games. He gave it a .1V underclock in BIOS and now he's getting mid-70's, but clocks are hitting around ~4.5GHz. For what he uses it for, it's a fantastic upgrade over his prior CPU and it's plenty fast for what he does, so there's no reason for him to complain about the under-volt/clock. I think if you water-cool it, it'll be fine, but I've seen a lot of posts elsewhere about silicon lottery with those and while some people can overclock to 5GHz, it is extremely rare and most people can only do it temporarily as it is unstable. I advised my brother to return the NH-U9S if he can and get the NH-U12S black or even the 14 or 15 depending on what he has room for, but he might just save up for a decent 280mm AIO. Totally anecdotal information, but I thought I'd share as I just chatted with him all yesterday about ways to get the most possible performance while still maintaining decent temps with that thing. I'm an Intel guy though (just in experience, I'm not anti-AMD at all) so it was all pretty new to me.Yep, that's exactly the type of thing I keep seeing in other people's posts about it, and it seems to only be the 5800x that's having the "runs insanely hot unless you undervolt it" or similar stories, like the motherboards are setting voltage too high or something. I also really want the higher core count of the 5900x or 5950x. If anyone has access to a microcenter & is willing to sell me a 5900x or 5950x, I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee for your troubles. I already pretty much locked down that I'm getting this motherboard: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07T5QFXFY/ because of it's massive amount of USB ports, included M.2 card ($60-$100 value), right angle 24-pin plug, and other things I like about it. Edit: Am I crazy for seriously considering buying a 3950x for a temporary CPU? lol Edit 2: now that I think about it, given 5800x's are reselling for ~$400 on EBay, might as well just get one of those as a temporary CPU, or something else that's on the cheaper end... just something to get the system up & running. Might get a 3000-series to where I won't have BIOS issues that might be the case with a 5000-series. I don't mind the temporary hit in gaming performance since in the long run I'll be getting a net-positive in that aspect once I have a 5900x/5950x.

Dabadger84Yeah I'm gonna be smart & just wait I think... I have the typical "money burns a hole in my pocket" mental state still, but I'm actually doing quiet well at building up a nest-egg... I just really want to upgrade. This 9900K gets maxed out with only 8 instances running & I need to do 10 or more, so when running 10, some of them occasionally go to not-responding... most of the time they come back, sometimes I have to restart, & restarting stuff in a Sandboxie instance is a pain in the rear sometimes. I'm going to be patient & get a 5900x or 5950x... and just hope that MSI X570 board doesn't need a BIOS update just to work with those processors :-D Otherwise I'll have to order a 3000-series CPU just to update the BIOS then either return or resell it... which is part of why I was considering just getting a 3900 or 3950 as a temporary chip, to alleviate that as being a possible issue, but that's a lot of money to throw away. My current 9900K/Z390 setup should resell somewhere in the $550 range on EBay, I think, so the overall cost of this upgrade is basically the price of the CPU, since I'll be reusing my RAM (it's pretty much perfect for an AMD setup, CL16 3600MHz).

howe10888@Dabadger84, what do you think this thermal pad? https://www.amazon.com/Iceberg-Thermal-DRIFTIce-120mm-0-5mm/dp/B08KYGP937?th=1
Clovis559How hot is your ambient? your card runs at a 100c? o.O
DZelmerWOW there are 15 kingpin 3090's listed on ebay right now 4 or 5 are at 3200 with bids Man that pisses me off!

Are you waiting on one too?I got one from the q trying for a second one for some sli im in line again at 100+ took me about 2 months for the first one i got in line at the beginning of the second time they opened auto notify. i'm also on the q for just about every other evga card also but it looks like that will me may or later before i see any thing from them... in the process of making a nice cnc copper back plate for the kingpin hopefully it turns out nice and doesn't cost to much i can hook some of you guys up with some
DZelmerI'm hoping by the time i get my second chance they open it up for round two fingers crossed if not i will try sli with different card if i can even get one of them.
alexaquiDid the heatsink/pad combo on the backplate lower memory temps? I do not want to take my card apart.... Do you mind linking to those heatsinks?
calastialFor those who've already started- whats the guestimate total thermal pad amount mm x mm used? Trying to figure out how much to buy
Dabadger84calastialFor those who've already started- whats the guestimate total thermal pad amount mm x mm used? Trying to figure out how much to buyFor the whole kit & kaboodle you won't need more than 200 x 200, if you can find that much in one pad. I redid/destroyed a few of mine & I still haven't went through the entire 200 x 200 x 2mm thermal pad I got for the original deal. EK gave me return details for sending back the other CPU block... and I went to setup a label - Both DHL & UPS want to charge me $185 to return it... I'm like "Uh, y'all need to figure this crap out, cuz I'm not paying that much to return something that YOU listed would work with my motherboard and clearly DOES NOT." I'm not paying for it either, I used Paypal to order the stuff, so there's no way I'm getting charged for it without my consent.EK may have "great" customer service but this whole process has been an absolute pain in the arse, don't think I'll be doing business with them again unless they make this right.I don't understand why they can't just let me mail it to their U.S. warehouse & they handle it from there... that would cost me all of $18, which I'm fine with. But $185, to return an item that should have never been defective, when said item is only worth $109? Get the F outta here. lol

I’m sketched for my water blocks cause they’re ekwb and I’ve heard stuff about them. For $500 you could have pieced together some top notch parts!
