I seemed to gain a lot more by doing thermal paste than the OP did for some reason.  Went from 86-88C mining ETH to 78C by switching from thermal tape to MX-4 paste.  If anyone has any ideas on a better strap than a zip tie to hold it down I'm open to ideas.  I didn't use a longer zip tie since they are wider and thicker.  Although I might try it to just make it look a bit better.  Then again already down the ghetto hole so maybe it doesn't matter.  LOL

If that's an XC3, your backplate is thinner, which means less soaking before it's heatsinked out.  You also have thicker heatsinks.  So it actually makes sense your temps are lower.  But, I also haven't tested mining at all (because I have no interest in it) since doing the paste.  The 84C Junction was before I did paste or even redid the thermal pads with the higher transfer ones.

As far as securing it, you can always do what I did, buy some thermal-taped small heatsinks (or buy small heatsinks & some thermal tape) and outline the thermal pasted heatsink area with them so it can't move.  Simple but effective.

Glad you're seeing good results, one of these days I'll do some retesting with how I have stuff setup now just to see if there's any further difference in temps, but with my highest Mem temp on the iCX sensors being in the 50s with 2 of them in the 40s, under a longer stress test, I'm pretty happy with things as they are.  Still plan on redoing the face-side of the card eventually, but I'll be waiting to do that til it's HydroCopper time.

Price dropped from $379 to $349 so I pulled the trigger.  I'm going to end up spending more on storage than I am on CPU/Motherboard... but then again I'll only be replacing storage once every other build most likely - and that's some fast lorg storage.  I also went ahead & ordered a 10TB HDD for $214.  It's an Enterprise-Grade drive, so meant for more heavy/constant read/write, 5 year warranty, and at that price it's about the best cost per TB I could find in the 8-14TB range.
All that's left storage wise is picking up a SATA SSD now.  Maybe one big one, maybe 2 slightly less big ones.

At this rate I'm also going to have pretty much all the other parts ready to go before I even get the CPU bought. lol

I saw a few builds with different versions of the Asus motherboard all running on PCPartPicker with the 2TB version of the drive above, so that removed some of the worries I had.
Now that I've "burned" almost $600 on some thicc storage, we shall see if the motherboard's shipping timeframe updates to sooner or not.

Can any of this apply to the 3080 backplate on the Hybrid as well?  The dark rock slim I have is quite big (It actually snubs up against the glass case door height wise lol) so I don't know how much clearance I'd have with a classic horizontal mount, let a lone a vertical.

Would this work for the evga series or is their PCB design too different?
Phanteks Glacier G30 STRIX Backplate for ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3090/3080, Anodized Aluminum, Backplate - Black - Newegg.com

I wouldn't chance it.  FTW3 & Strix have different enough layouts that it could be an issue.

As for a 3080, I think doing pads & heatsinks would still help - the backplate side of the card still has PCB heatsoak and the VRM boxes on the backside putting out heat.  You could definitely lower temps overall on the card by doing pads between the PCB & the backplate, and some heatsinks on the backplate.

That's proof that ANY heat dissipation is better than none when it comes to the backplate being able to help cool the card if it were better designed.

I didn't mean to imply I was actually getting better temps. From what I've seen, maybe about the same. I was talking junction temps. I think in gaming at 450w I still see a max of 70C or so. Not that much lower than the mining temp.

Should have added more info. My card is actually a Zotac 3090 in a Corsair block. I've been following this thread for ideas on backplate cooling.

My only point originally was just that the thermal paste made a bigger improvement than what I remembered you seeing (junction temp). But I do have a bigger heatsink and maybe the advantage of a completely flat backplate.

In normal gaming I see around 70C or so on Junction Temp, and that's running +1000MHz.  At least last time I ran a stressful game that's about where it capped out at.
I think the main difference would be backplate thickness.  While the Kingpin's being thicker isn't necessarily a bad thing overall, it does encourage heatsoak & lessen the throughput of the conductivity I would think.  I do wish it iddn't have the giant eVGA e in it either, but what can ya do.  Hoping if a HydroCopper version does become available anytime soon, it will have a flat backplate (that they ship with the kit so I can swap mine), not that I really want to redo the thermal paste bit, but it'd be nice to have a flat, thinner backplate, if it comes with one.

Intel has legitimately lost their mind.  Like... seriously.

I question why anyone in their right mind would buy that instead of getting an AMD setup and waiting for the 5900x to be in stock if you're going to drop that much on a CPU.  I really do.  Insanity.

I'm just waiting for Amazon to update on when the Asus X570 Hero will actually ship to me so I can order a 3900x and wait for the 5900x to actually exist at MSRP. lol

I'm actually looking to buy one :P the reviews drop at 6am PDT (If the site I was looking at is accurate), but I'm looking for different numbers then merely the stock. I don't care about cores though, just overclock performance. My intel Build is going to be for mostly OC gaming and certain benchmarks like Port Royal. Which one performs better overclocked is which I'll get.

Most games don't even fully use 8 cores, so the difference is really going to be in the overclocked speed. You don't really buy a 900k for Cinebench, photoshop, encoding flex. I'm hopeful because Gigabyte claims all core 5.1 is achievable on all of their boards, but is that 0avx, what cooler? So much detail is left out of that statement. In the end if I do want a 11 over a 10 series, it will come down to when the Z590 dark is for sale (Last I checked, 20 seconds ago, it is not). There is that 8am PDT event this morning @teamevga, so maybe some word then? Sadly the die shots Ive seen, the KF version cutting out the enlarged igpu, looks like it could have been a 10-core.

Which is probably why I cannot sleep lol

Oh lol, I was actually checking the room temperatures hoping for some OCing tonight. 68F / 38% humidity Dew point: 41.4 F /5.2C Blah!!!
Back to bed...

This is the exact link i got mine on it is the KF but for all intents and purposes I have never used the onboard video on my last 3 builds....
silicone lottery with the 10900k is the biggest think it seems I can get a good 5.1 oc with a custom loop at 1.3 to 1.33 v core works for every thing but sustained avx  It will run for hours and hours but cant seem to hack it mining on all 10 cores over night it will just black screen and restart temps never get over 70 normally stay mid 60's If i drop 2 cores it mines at 5.1 for a week before i started messing with it again. I can get a 5.2 avx all core at 1.4 to 1.45 volts for benchmarks but the temps get hot fast the water never gets hot in the loop but it can't pull it away fast enough as soon as the bench is over it returns to the 30's It will mine at 5.2 but only for a few hours before it browns out or something If i have it throttle like i have it set now on 3 cores it will wind up to 5.3 at 1.45 and temps are fine but thats only for short bursts and only if nothing else is going on just 2 or 3 cores. This chip ran so damn hot because of the way the board was set up out of the box the Z490 taichi watch linus tech tips on the board review on don't run them at factory settings! for real none of of the factory throttling was turned on and out of the box it was all core avx 4.6 or what ever the 10900k spec is no turbo timer and voltages were hitting 1.45 v core!!! would hit 80c almost instantly! Had a kraken AIo 280mm on it. Had it laying around. If i wasn't keeping this thing at a 5.1 avx 0 I would have just used the Kraken. The ek block and rads tamed it right down it would heat soak the Kraken at any thing over 4.8 all core avx 0 after about 30 min and temps would just slowly keep climbing until it crashed. Stock with the V core turned down to only what was needed The Kraken would have been more than enough or even a 4.8 for every day. Just not benching and gaming or especially encoding and mining. Every thing i did was in a 69-70 Deg F room. Humidity about 50%. It seems I got a ok 10900KF but nothing special or total junk I'm Happy for what i'm going to use it for.

Realbench 5.2 all core avx 0 ambiant 71 deg F tonight for some reason.

The voltages scare me! this is the boards idea of adaptive i have a max set but it seems to over shoot it by a lot at least at 5.2... 5.1 i get a max of 1.33 to 1.35

Time Spy extreme 5.2 Avx 0  Still crazy voltages the adaptive seems to do what ever it wants no matter what i do I have to use adaptive if i want it to throttle down. I hate the way there boards do voltage I'm still used to a 4790K where i tell the board to do something it just dose it. Any suggestions besides just lock it in for doing the oc's What a pain!

Let me know if you can't read these pictures i will try to get them closer to 500k

I can read them. I love all the benches you did. I’m hoping liquid chilled I can pull off unstable 5.3 benchmarks and a 5.2 stable clock. Your earlier temps made me lean towards a 10900k over a 11900k. The 11 runs way too hot, it’s not going to leave me much room to push farther. I think...

I want to have options though so I’m still waiting on a z590 dark even if I put a 10 series in it for now.  Since it’s not for sale, this weekend I’m building my AMD system. The only thing that could stop me is if the extra barb fittings don’t come in time. Everything else should be here by Thursday Friday.

I’m adding 4 sets of quick disconnects so eventually I can swap amd and intel builds to the chiller easily for testing etc. Also for cleaning 😜.

hwinfo64 crashes it ever time its opened and i have to reset my water pump control to the correct profile so every bench i did with the water pump running at looks like 500-1000 rpm instead of 2000. and fans were all at what ever speed they were at when cpro crashes. I can at least just power down and count to 10 and it comes back or pull the sata power to it and plug it back in the sata power connector is in a real bad spot.

Yep all cpu fans and pump and temps sensors are on the cpro for the loop....D Rgb Lighting still stays working though when the cpro crashes it never even blips....from what i can tell

https://www.newegg.com/samsung-4tb-870-evo-series/p/N82E16820147795 - if anyone is looking for a monster-sized SSD that's top quality, that one is 10% off right now ($479 regular price), 4TB & it's not QLC like most of the larger capacity SSDs are.

I ordered it.  So my storage is now complete, once everything arrives.  1TB M.2 980 Pro, 2TB M.2 980 Pro, 4TB 870 Evo & a Seagate 10TB HDD.  Going to be very nice only have 4 actual/physical drives instead of 6.  So that's... a lot on just storage LOL $196 on the 1TB M.2, $349 on the 2TB M.2, $431 for the 4TB SATA SSD, & $214 for the 10TB Seagate HDD.
Pretty sure that's more than I'm going to end up spending on CPU+Mobo. lol

Re: 3090 (Kingpin & others!) - Get that backside VRAM cool! 2021/03/31 07:43:54 (permalink)
I bought the new Gelid thermal pads and have them on the way. I have a 3090 with an Alphacool Waterblock and non active backplate. Core is cool as you would expect under water (39c while mining), but now that the weather and house are warming up the memory junction temps are going up too. I had a sweet spot of 112MH/s while consuming about 250 watts. with an efficiency of ~428KH. My memory junction temps were at about 94c (down from 100c when I was mining at 120MH/s settings). Now my junction temps are creeping back up towards 100c at my formerly very heat efficient settings. My plan was just to throw on the new gelid pads that dissipate at about 12-15 watts on the front AND back. Now I'm thinking something a bit different.

I don't have clearance for another fan on the back because it is set up in a vertical position. I am now thinking, why reinstall the aluminum backplate at all- does it really cool anything? What if I add the Gelid thermal pads and then stick small copper heatsinks on top of the thermal pad with no backplate/open to the back. You can't see it anyway and in my head this seems like it would cool them memory on the back even better. The fans you see at the bottom of the case are blowing up towards the card and blowing air on the front and back of card. Am I thinking this through incorrectly? What do you guys think?

Right now I have a 860 Evo & a 860 Qvo both 1TB, looking forward to having one larger, faster SATA SSD.  I'll be splitting games between the new SATA SSD, and the 2TB M.2, based on how often I play them/if I enjoy them & how I judge their loading times/if there's a lot of loading times in the game.
So games like Dragon Age Inquisition & GTA V will definitely be on the M.2, not because I play them a lot, but because when I do play them I want snappy loading times & no hard drive laggos.  It's going to be interesting to watch the data migration fly when I'm transferring from my current game M.2 that's almost full to the new 2TB M.2, even in this system it should fly.  I'm going to try & transfer everything before the new CPU & motherboard are here so that it's a much smoother transition with the "new drives" already populated with the games & such, only thing that I won't be plugging in to this system before hand to do any kind of transfering is the 1TB M.2 that Windows will be going on on the new system - don't want this Windows messing that up, I've had issues with that in the past.

Might work if the heatsink is big enough. It would eliminate one thermal interface. Part of the problem is that we have 2 interfaces with the backplate. You'll probably need airflow over the heatsinks though for it to be very effective.

For example in my setup, I saw 88C with nothing on the backplate, 84C with just the heatsink with heatsink compound, but 74-76C with the 60mm Noctua on the heatsink. Those were all at a somewhat reduced hashrate of 105-110 mh/s. I've got it running now at 115 mh and 78C.

The 3 minutes and some change of that is exactly how I've felt about the 11900K since the 11700K stuff leaked. :-D Pathetic.
