I think high refresh 1440p is the way to go. It strikes a good balance between nice resolution and silky smooth fps whilst not breaking the bank on a monitor and hardware.

1440p no doubt, even if you can't max out its refresh rate you will be able to in the future. A good monitor is going to outlast every other thing in your build, absolutely no point in not future proofing yourself a bit. 1080p is dead as far as I am concerned for the future.

I'd also recommend 1440p. You can always change the resolution if your GPU struggles a bit and you'll have better res if you choose to upgrade your GPU later.

You can change your res but best to do it in-game via a scaling feature imo, because trying to run 1080p natively on a 1440p native panel does not upscale well like a tv with an up-scaling chip does.

Yeah, not maxing refresh rate and lower FPS were my main concerns but ig it’s worth taking a small hit now to have a future proof monitor

If you have never had a monitor with variable refresh rate before it really helps matters when it comes to lower/unstable fps so it makes games a lot more playable than janky fps on a non VRR monitor locked at 60 hz or so.

Running 1080p on a 1440p monitor would cause black boxes on the sides right?

I think so yeah, but you can stretch the image if you wish, it's not gonna look great either way though.

Well to be honest it depends on the game... 1080 upscaling to 1440p looks decent and will not look stretched.
Most game engines will be able to cope pretty good, often it looks just a little zoomed in since you have less workspace with 1080p compared to 1440p.

Depends on the monitor, most can scale, on some you can even choose whether to scale or leave blanks I think. Scaling will just not look good due to pixel count, that is stretching 3 pixels on 4 physical pixels on the screen. Probably there is some technology that could help (used in TVs), but as suggested in-game scaling would do a better job anyway.

Has very little to do with the game, monitors just don't have the up scaling tech that tvs do and 1080p to 1440p is not a 1:1 pixel ratio so no matter what you do its not going to look good. but leaving it at 1440p native and using ingame internal resolution scaling is a different matter.

You should be fine with a 1440p, not all games will reach 120 fps tho, if you play competitively you might lower resolution to increase fps

Re: 1080p or 1440p monitor for 3060ti? 2021/06/03 16:48:14 (permalink)
1080p Vs 1440p should make no difference to this. What matters is the aspect ratio. Most modern games will support 1920x1080 and 2560x1440, which are both 16:9 aspect ratio, meaning you won't end up with black bars on the top or sides.
However, I will say that a good 1080p monitor running 1080p content will generally look more crisp than a 1440p display running 1080p content, with some exceptions for much higher end monitors.
That being said I personally think that getting a 1440p monitor and downscaling games to 1080p where frame rate is a priority is the right option, particularly given the relatively small increase in price from a 144hz 1080p monitor to 144hz 1440p, for example. It means that if you're able to upgrade your graphics card in future (lol as if) then you'll be able to take full advantage of it right away without having to sell your 1080p monitor to buy a 1440p monitor.

A 3060ti should be able to play most RPG style games at around 60fps with reasonable settings in 1440p, and would cope with 144fps in games like Apex Legends ok provided you downscale to 1080p (my 1070 gets close to these numbers, so a 3060ti should safely do this).

I believe OP is worried their GPU can't push 1440p well enough.

I have the same concerns but if I have to buy a monitor before I can build a PC I would still get 1440p because at some point I will be able to fully utilize it and if I have to run on potato low settings until then that's fine vs wasting the money on a 1080p that I won't want to use after I get a new rig.

No one has asked what kind of games you play. If you play competitive games like Valorant, Overwatch, Csgo, Apex Legends, etc. you're going to want a 1080p monitor so you can max FPS. That said, I always prefer smoother experience to a 'prettier' one even for single player games.

With a 3060ti, I haven't really looked closely at the benchmarks but you might have a hard time hitting consistent frames at 1440p. Something to consider.

Yeah, 1440p performance isn’t amazing but it still averages 100+ FPS on competitive games and 60+ on single player games
