Pretty sure the 12th gen CPU will work...I could not update my Classified 690 with the USB on board so I got a 12900K, installed and hooked up everything, booted and pressed DEL key, got into BIOS and updated the BIOS file that was on the board with the 2.05, which was the latest at the time.  Updated okay, then removed the 12900K and exchanged for a 13700K and all is good.
Since then, EVGA released 2.06 and 2.08...2.06 works fine but had problems with updating (in BIOS and Windows both) with 2.08 so just left 2.06 in all three BIOS positions.
Never did try the USB again as no need so long as board will post to get into BIOS or do it from Windows.  The first time I got error code E8 which I think is a memory error (I did not have memory installed) but as I said before, got it all working with the 12th gen CPU so never tried the on board USB port.  Since then I have watched all the videos, read all the posts, etc. etc. and seems to still be questions on which way will work for sure.

Well have to wait until Monday after Amazon's delivery.  The funny thing is that the bios update without CPU didn't work for me when I used the USB stick that came with the motherboard (E1 error).  I can accept the USB stick error if I am using my own sticks, but I was using the one that came with the mobo...

Update.
I managed to update the bios (within bios) on my Z690 classified after installing a i3-12100 cpu.   I updated to 2.05.  Now lets hope the board runs with my Gigabye RTX 4090 LoL.
Thanks for all your help :)

excellent!

and great idea to focus on 4090 now while the 12th Gen CPU is functioning rather than jumping to using ur 13th Gen CPU.

u have plenty of GPUs for getting 4090 to work?

are u keeping the 12th Gen CPU permanently... to have it on hand for diagnosing? (And hopefully u have no probs with M$ and BIOS updates.)

i can't wait to get a 4090 -- hope it is cool for u today.

I will return the 12th Gen CPU  (12100k) I have from Amazon since the one I got has a defective CPU fan (not making an excuse to return).  For some reason of the 4 clips could not be locked into the Z690. I tried a few times and it refused to lock while the other 3 clips were fine.  I will probably go get a cheaper one from BB for less than $100 (the 9500 or something) just for diagnostic.   I will try updating to 2.08 (straight from 2.05).    The bios which came with the z690 was 1.03 and the update to 2.05 was a breeze, no issues.
I still have my EVGA 2080ti that I need to get rid of.  I am currently running the 3080ti on my 10gen.  The 4090 will be mounted onto the Z690.
You should get the  4090 w the liquid cooling haha.  I want that one but it's alway out of the stock.  Maybe I will convert mine to water cooling.

Question...  Anyone has issues using vertical GPU mount with the Z690?

cool. cool. cool.
sry about the clips.

i used one of my 2080ti a few months ago for diagnosing for a few weeks, and it was a blessing. but i still use a 1440p LCD. so i hardly noticed the difference from 3090, because it was just as smooth -- the Average/Max/Min FPS was slightly reduced versus 3090. Both were EVGA of course.

1. Get ur 4090 working.

2. Because ur going to go 13th Gen eventually, get v2.05 BIOS on another one then the other of the three BIOS. Stick to the method that worked yesterday.

I'd keep ^^ simple this way:
A. With ur PC off, and PSU in off position to play it safe; use the BIOS Selector Switch (On MOBO -- Lower right corner) and switch to another BIOS.

B. Confirm u have properly switched to the BIOS, by looking at the BIOS Active Indicator LEDs (On MOBO -- Lower right corner -- Below SATA Ports -- Left of the BIOS Selector Switch)
-- WHITE: Active BIOS chip (only 1 will be lit at a time).
-- The Numbers “3, 2, and 1” in that order, are above each LCD.

C. Flash the selected BIOS from v1.03 to v2.05 -- just like u did the 1st successful flash yesterday. Then test test test to see if all is AOK like the 1st Flash.

D. If ^^ is AOK, then Flash 3rd BIOS to v2.05.

Maybe mounting 4090 vertically could be a problem. So if ur 4090, included a brace, like some manufacturers are doing; or they manufactured in a way that won't ever sag horizontally; skip the vertical mount until after it works traditional/ horizontal. Then after several days, or a week or two, switch to vertical. Because, if horizontal is AOK, but then it acts up vertically, u can switch back quickly to horizontal to diagnose it more easily. An incremental approach is always the best way to go. Or measure twice and cut once.

Thanks.  If I read you correctly, I can set up 3 different bios w the z690, like #1 = 2.05 (which I installed), #2 = 2.05 (lets keep #1 and #2 as 2.05), and #3 = 2.08 (I will try the latest).   Does that mean I can run the system with any one of this bios whenever I want (lets say when #3=2.08 is buggy, I can switch to #2 and use 2.05)?

I want to try the vertical GPU mount because i am hoping that vertical mount will alleviate the bending of the power cable?

yep. yep. yep.

start with v2.05 on all three. test each time. then update one of the v2.05 to v2.08.

Vertical GPU mount should be np right away but...

If a melting Adapter Plug on a 4090 is a concern -- yes, not bending the power cable is good practice; but the biggest danger; when it comes to melting 4090 plugs, has to do with the Plug (the Adapters) not being plugged in all the way.

So what u want to do is gently (edit: but firmly) plug in the Power Adapter, then gently (edit: but firmly) confirm it IS plugged in all the way. The clip on the Power Adapter is suppose to be fully implemented -- like most all PSU related plugs -- but it's been difficult on the 4090; because the plug is so small and so tight and so overlooked as the causing the melting.

Plug in the Power Adapter into the  4090 before before installing the card vertically or Horizontally. And without damaging the card, gently (edit: but firmly) confirm several times the Power Adapter is fully plugged into the card, and do so before installing the card vertically or Horizontally. Examine the Adapter's Plug closely by eye and if need be, magnify it. And then gently pull -- without damaging it, on the Power Adapter's plug, not the chord connected to the plug -- several times as proof it is fully plugged in and make sure all sides of the plug are seated by examining closely.

Ppl that first physically install the 4090 -- vertically or Horizontally -- and then they plug in the Power Adapter into the side of the card, have failed to properly plug it in fully as they try and avoid harming the card and or MOBO. And as a result, it ends up being too loose. A less than fully and properly plugged in Power Adapter = a potential melting plug. In the future i bet they implement/ engineer different clips or a multi-clip, that guarantee it is properly connected/ plugged in.

start with v2.05 on all three. test each time. then update one of the v2.05 to v2.08.

Finally had time to continue the update using a 12th gen G7400 CPU.  Updated bios #2 to 2.06, bios #1 was updated to 2.05 previously, and left bios #3 as 1.03 for now.  Initially I encountered issues powering up the mobo w the 12 gen cpu and was getting the 7F code.  Afterward I did the following -> power off mobo, power off PSU, press reset on mobo, then power up the mobo again.  This sequence worked for me as I was able to boot w the 12 gen cpu and update the bios #2 to 2.06.  I then followed the same sequence to boot the mobo w bios#3 = 1.03, bios #1= 2.05 to make sure and everything went well.

Next in line is to install the 13th gen and the 4900, and hope for the best lol.  I will first try w bios 2.06 and before updating it to 2.08.

cool. cool. too cool.

so ur keeping the 12th gen CPU, just in case u ever need it again?
(Intel® Pentium® Gold G7400 Processor
6M Cache, 3.70 GHz
) (Recommended Customer Price
$77.00 - $87.00)

how much did u pay?

and that's the least expensive 12th Gen for z690/z790?

i'm asking u and also for others researching and reading this post too. after all, if ppl are going to put out the money for a 13th Gen and an expensive EVGA Classified or KPE... wat's another $79.99?

Yes I am going to keep this CPU for testing.   I paid $89.99 + tax ~ $95.  I checked the price tracker over the past year and there was a time period in which this cpu was selling for $50, not sure if that is true though.
There is a cheaper 12th gen CPU G6900 (Celeron) and its on the EVGA list of compatible CPUs.  It's like $10 cheaper than G7400.    I didn't find it on Bestbuy or Amazon so returning it might be an issue (no free return).

Update:  I finished setting up my system and installed windows 11 with bios 2.06.  No issue at all.   I ran burn-in test for 3 hrs and no errors. Next is to install the RTX 4090 this week.

nice. glad to hear ur build is aok. congratz! ty 4 update!

Which make and model 4090 do u have?

i'm tinkering with getting a Cooler Master HAF 700 Case soon. Because a 4090 will not fit my HAF 942... without major modding -- involving removal of its' internal Hard Drive Cage -- bolts would have to be cut/drilled out -- would suk doing that!lol

Also:
1. I also have to find out, if the 4090 i eventually get, will it require a vBIOS update.
(I'd like to avoid ^^ of course. So if ppl know about 4090's that don't need vBIOS updates to work in EVGA's Z690 Classified... it would be too cool. Maybe the "Date First Available" could guarantee not needing a vBIOS update? Say September 22, 2022 versus a January 09, 2023 "Date First Available".)

2. Will my MOBO need a BIOS update if i get a 4090?

tytyty! GL

Hi GL,

Bee_Dee_3_Dee
Which make and model 4090 do u have?

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OC 24G, 24GB GDDR6X (GV-N4090GAMING OC-24GD)

i'm tinkering with getting a Cooler Master HAF 700 Case soon. Because a 4090 will not fit my HAF 942... without major modding -- involving removal of its' internal Hard Drive Cage -- bolts would have to be cut/drilled out -- would suk doing that!lol

The card is huge and thick.  I mounted it horizontally (I might do watercooling later and mount the card vertically).  I think the power cable are slightly bent when I put the case cover back on but I didn't need to force it to close.   Note that the GPU bracket (to prevent the card from damaging the PCI-E mount on the mobo due to its weight) that Gigabyte provides does not fit onto the Classified z690 mobo because part of the L shape bracket sits on top of the USB connector on the mobo --> At least for me because the USB cable from my Corsair case which connects to the front USBs has a tall connector and it blocks the bracket from mounting onto the mobo.  I ended up buying an ARGB (colorful!) vertical mount stick from Amazon to anchor the 4090 ($10...)

Because of the thickness of the 4090, it seems like I wont be able to install my soundblaster Ae-7 since there isn't much space below the GPU (very narrow). Oh well, I will stick with the Nu audio output or connect my external USB soundblaster G6.

1. I also have to find out, if the 4090 i eventually get, will it require a vBIOS update

I had no issue installing and booting the GB RTX 4090 at all.  I rebooted several times (installing drivers, windows updates etc etc), no issue.  I even tried playing the game Control for awhile, turned off the computer, reboot, and had no issues.  I got my GPU in mid Jan 2023.

2. Will my MOBO need a BIOS update if i get a 4090?
I am running EVGA bios 2.06 now

Good to hear the motherboard and CPU is working. At that point it’s hard to see having much trouble with the GPU.

I have a z690 K|ngP|n board I just got from evga.com that I am attempting to flash the latest bios to without a cpu in the socket, I only have a i9-13900ks. I've gotten as far as the display spinning for about 5 minutes and then it says "1.0", this is with only the renamed bin file on a usb 2.0 flash drive. what is the exact behavior that indicates a successful flash? I already put the m.2 ssd's in. will that be a problem? should the ram sticks be in? should the cpu power cables be in, or just the motherboard power cable? and now that I think about it, being that I ordered this board only recently, would it be able to post/boot at all with a 13th gen intel chip? what bios would it come with?

I kind of want to be cautious here and have some certainty before i put it together, because the waterblock can't be removed or installed with the board in the case so it's like a 3-4 hour job to put the computer together and get the cooling system functioning.

Chances are the flash was successful. I remember mine showing 1.2 or something equally nonsensical, but it booted up fine after I put the CPU in. The USB flashback error codes are E1, E4, and so on, which is confusing because they overlap with POST codes. It'd be better if EVGA used non-hexadecimal codes like U1, U4, etc.

Yep! it worked. i tried it again when i got home and it would just count down and then say 1.5 without doing any spinning. put it all together and it posted and booted to windows just fine. it's all hunkydory. thanks, i would have probably kept stressing and messing with it instead of putting it together otherwise.

Trying to do this on a EVGA Z790 DARK K|NGP|N board and I keep getting an E1 error code a few seconds after the flash process begins...
What exactly do the files on the USB stick need to look like?
I downloaded the updated BIOS from the site, extracted it to the USB that came with my board, and renamed/moved the .bin file like the manual stated.

USB formatted FAT32 is a must, extract file,  then make sure you rename the file correctly

BIOS Installation Without CPU

  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Rename the file "EVGAE7XX.bin", where XX is the last two digits of the part number (e.g. Z790 DARK K|NGP|N should be EVGAE799.bin)
  • Install the USB flash drive into the USB Type-A port on the motherboard.
  • Make sure to connect the 24pin power connector from your power supply to the motherboard.
  • Switch on the power supply, if it is not already on.
  • Hold the BIOS Update button on the rear I/O for approximately 2 seconds until the flash begins (the cursor on the POST LED will begin cycling)
  • The BIOS update may take approximately 5-7 minutes to complete.  When done, the board will restart.
  • Complete the rest of your build at this point to confirm a successful flash.
