The POST did cycle with the file named EVGAE690.bin Yes
I have had to hold it down for about 10 seconds yes.
It did cycle for around 7 minutes too. Yes
I did not try to install the CPU.

Hey, I have the same trouble.
Same thing with 1.5 post code.
Then I disassembled the finished build and put the mobo on the carton box and started experimenting with different versions of bios, different usb sticks and different hardware installed. And finally the 1.5 post went away! But then another problem appeared. When I tried to update bios with different file versions renamed to evgae699.bin e1 post appeared no matter what stick i was using. And when i read your posts and renamed to evgae690.bin it gave me e4 post code.

Wanted to know what stick did u use and what bios version.
And if anyone knows any information that can help I will appreciate it!

I used the usb stick supplied with the motherboard and Bios 2.03  with the file named EVGAE690.bin

Thanks man, but i did exact the same things and still nothing - e1 with e699 and e4 with e690.

Did u have any hardware installed during the update process?

Everything except CPU

Re: someone please help me. (bios update without cpu) 2023/01/19 17:45:41 (permalink)
I'm everyone,
I'm a little confused on what to do after extracting the new file to the USB provided with the motherboard. What happens to the older file that's already on the USB drive? do I delete it and place the updated one on the drive? and what happens to all the other folders on the drive? Do I delete everything on the drive and only have the new file after being renamed? I believe little details like this confuse a lot us. I'm on idle now I don't want to do anything until I'm absolutely sure. I have not installed the motherboard yet, The motherboard is on my workstation with the PSU connected to it. My intensions are to install i5 13600K, 4070ti after updating Bios. Also as I read above is it better to use 2.03 or 2.06. Your help will be appreciated.

Re: someone please help me. (bios update without cpu) 2023/01/19 19:35:50 (permalink)
Hi, Blake. You have to replace existing file named evgae699.bin with the new one, downloaded from evga website. Don’t forget to rename it the same way. Other stuff like files and folders don’t matter at all as long as you keep the new bios file in the root.
If you do everything right you might not have any trouble.
I’ve flashed bios with 2.06 version from the first try after replacing the psu. Notice that phanteks psu doesn’t work with evga motherboards (2 cases with the same hardware had issues). I’ve bought a super flower platinum and everything is just perfect. My friend uses corsair platinum 1000w and has no issues too. But phanteks + evga - just don’t.
Good luck!

Thank you for the quick response juice.

Okay I will use 2.06 since it's the latest version, just replace the file on the USB with the download, rename it and don't worry about all other folders and updates. i will give it a try.
By the way I have the EVGA 1000G.
I will post after results
good luck to myself

I am having the same problem now trying to update my Z690 classified (bought direct from EVGA late September) without a CPU.  I've tried like 5 USB sticks (the EVGA one, and a bunch of old ones ranging from 250mb to 16gb), format to FAT32, copied on only the bios file, butkept getting the dreaded E1 error code.   I even tried two power supply (an EVGA supernova 1200w and a Corsair 1000W, both work fine) but same results.  Here are some observations.

1) When I turn on the power supply, the board lights up and also the LED on the USB stick lights up.  I then press the bios update button and wait for ~2 before releasing button. The LED on the USB stick doesn't light up anymore when the LED motherboard shows a spinning circle.  After a short while the E1 error pops up.
2) The pins on the CPU socket are fine (Doubt this is related to my issue).

I've tried to update with bios 2.06 and 2.08 but ended up with the same error.   If my files were bad then I should see a E8 (or whatever error).

I am thinking of buying/borrowing a 12th gen cpu to perform the bios update but i have some questions:
1) If I perform the update within the Z690 classified bios (one of the 3 methods) with a cpu and memory but without booting into windows, where should i insert the USB stick??  Should I inserted it into the back of the motherboard or I still need to insert it into the USB slot on the motherboard (the same slot that one uses to update without a CPU).    I dont want to waste time installing windows on a SSD and then do the bios update inside windows.
2) What are the chances that the issue is caused by a faulty USB slot when I perform the bios update without CPU?  Is there anyway to tell?    I know there is power going through because the LED on the USB memory stick lights up.

I just wonder if I should just send the board back to EVGA and have them flash the bios instead of me wasting time investigating.

Thx

Did you rename the .bin file before trying to flash the bios?

Yes.  Renamed it to EVGAE698.BIN
This is how the file is named in the EVGA USB that came with the motherboard (in capitals)

1. Start with Forum Sig so everyone can see the hardware u have...
Use *link* for creating an EVGA Forum signature.
Feel free to copy/edit my signature.

2. Plz confirm u have both "8 pin EPS Power Connectors" connected.

3. Keep trying the EVGA USB drive carefully. Don't damage the USB Type-A port on the motherboard; and be sure to be careful when inserting and when removing it that it is in all the way. Maybe copy all the files on it, into a backup folder somewhere, and try formatting it before copying a .bin back onto it. And in addition to v2.06 and v2.08, also try v2.03 too. If EVGA Flash drive doesn't work after formatting it, try same on others. Plus be sure u have included trying a USB 2.0 flash drives maybe under 2 GB.

4. MOBO's Serial Number is on the box, the board came in, for easy registering.

5. See: Khronos_18's Youtube vid from post #19 on this thread or just use the following link:
How to update bios Evga z690 Classified
^^ is worth a million words. (watch and listen too all of it beginning to end.) Hopefully u catch something on it to try too.

6. The two other ways, to update BIOS that u asked about: Windows Installation and BIOS Installation within BIOS, are easy to do. And the IO USB ports should work for both, unless someone corrects me and says only for Windows Installation. The USB Type-A port on the motherboard, i believe/guess99% is exclusively for BIOS Installation Without CPU. And as a side note because of EVGA's absolute mastery of PrecisionX GPU/video card firmware vBIOS updating, over the years, from within Windows, I'd also trust Windows Installation BIOS updating with them; but never suggest it with any other MOBO brand. But out of habit, i'd still suggest forgoing Windows Installation and going with BIOS Installation within BIOS if ur left with getting a 12th Gen... see my Sig? My Rig's 1st Birthday is a week or two away next month in February. I'm basically the "v1.03 guinea pig". It has worked flawlessly. I've followed the 1st rule BIOS Flashing: Not fixing (updating BIOS) if it ain't broke. And I'm still using the original Drivers too. Note: I always disable Window's Update from updating Drivers the 1st thing when installing an OS. It's harder to do after Win7, so just Google it.

np 4 the info and copy/edit sig.

there's two (Dual) 8 pin EPS power connectors. i think MOBO can't flash without them. don't, do not, mistakenly use "PCI-e 8-pin or 6+2-pin connector" (#8 on Page -16- of the manual). see if Khronos_18 explicitly points out connectors, on his How to update bios Evga z690 Classified vid... i think he said it failed to flash without and np as soon as they were connected. The description u gave of the Flash Drive lighting-up only initially, is probably a thing to note. So with 8 pin EPS power connectors, if the Flash Drive stays lit for the 1st time; u can play Nostradamus and state out loud, "it's a gonna work" and especially "it's alive!".

If anyone needs extensions, i've used: TeamProfitcom CPU 8 Pin Power Extension Cable(s) for a whole year now. they helped enormously.

i've wanted the "Monitor: Alienware AW3423DW" from day 1 release of it -- congratz!

Thanks GL.  I will try it out later today.  I didn't know that the 8 pin EPS needs to be connected since I dont have anything on the mobo other than the USB.   Yes the USB drive lit up briefly when I switched the power on and then was off.
I have a 27 Acer Predator IPS for like 5 yrs finally switching to the QD-OLED.  The QD-OLED is a great monitor. I think you can find it for under a $1000 after discount from Dell and cashback from credit card.  I have seen people paying like $800 for one.

I was able to flash my board with only the 24-pin attached. May be different from board-to-board but don’t know why/ how that could be.

If all else fails and you get extremely frustrated, you can buy and install a cheap 12th generation chip. Then you can flash to a current bios (that supports 13th gen chip) through Windows or bios. Replace 12th gen chip with the 13th gen chip and you should be good to go. At your option, keep or return the 12th gen CPU.

Yeah that would be the last resort before shipping it back.  Amazon has the i3-12100F for $106...  I checked UPS and it will cost me like $50 to ship the mobo to EVGA to have it flashed as I would ship the mobo in its original box and then put it inside a bigger box..).  I just want to find a way to make sure that it is not related to a faulty USB port (for the bios update) otherwise it would be a wasted effort in buying a 12th gen to try and still fails.  I haven't had a chance to follow GL's advice yet but will try tomorrow.

Some people have tried a cpu like the g6900 or g7400 from best buy and then returned it quickly when done. https://www.bestbuy.com/s...492596.p?skuId=6492596

6Q6CPFHPBPCU691 is a discount code anyone can use.

there's two (Dual) 8 pin EPS power connectors. i think MOBO can't flash without them. don't, do not, mistakenly use "PCI-e 8-pin or 6+2-pin connector" (#8 on Page -16- of the manual). see if Khronos_18 explicitly points out connectors, on his vid... i think he said it failed to flash without and np as soon as they were connected. The description u gave of the Flash Drive lighting-up only initially, is probably a thing to note. So with 8 pin EPS power connectors, if the Flash Drive stays lit for the 1st time; u can play Nostradamus and state out loud, "it's a gonna work" and especially "it's alive!".

Lol, guess what?  I was trying to update the bios again tonight based on your suggestion on connecting the 8pin EPSs.  When I tried to plug in the 2 EPS 8 pin (4+4) cable into the mobo, I noticed that the pattern of the 4 connectors (the top has two box shaped connector in the middle and the bottom has two semi-circular shaped connectors in the middle) on the mobo is not the same as the pattern in the cable from my EVGA supernova 1200W P3 powersupply!   Yes I was using the CPU cables that came with the EVGA PSU with 8pin at one end and 4+4 pins connect at the other end. ****....  I checked the link you posted in your previous message and the one on amazon matches the motherboard.  This is ridiculous.    I will go buy them from amazon tonight.

no worries. u can use cables that came with ur PSU or the extensions too. the extension cables i linked ^^, and i have used for a year now; are just extensions for ur PSU cables. without them, cable management was a bee-word.

Note: make 20 posts total and u can start posting Links and Pics.

what u describe ^^ was discussed on posts several times a year ago because ppl were paying full price for the Classified and they were being extremely careful. (NOTE: at bottom each of each forum is, "Show All Posts 30 days Last Post DESC" and can be changed.) And it continues to be discussed from time to time. like now.

another place to search is on the EVGA PSU Forums. i bet i can search there and find pertinent posts. u try too. hopefully ppl that see these posts we are making now, know, and will chime in and explain the pattern(s) not matching exactly and why and that it is fine. we need to find proof explaining that one or two of the cables patters don't match and why they don't, but still work. and in the meantime Google/Youtube too for sure.

GL

Edit: took a couple minuets to find: CPU power socket not keyed same as CPU cable. (It's from: Saturday, August 13, 2022 6:10 PM. i though for sure ppl had posted stuff before that, but i may have overlook others from earlier while searching.)
I haven't read ^^ yet, but saw it has pics and probably the explanations we needed.

Yeah no big deal.  I was just surprised that an EVGA power supply doesnt have the correct cable for an EVGA motherboard that's all.  I can see if the two are from different manufacturers...  The cables will arrive tomorrow so I will keep my fingers cross.

Thx

Just tried to flash the bios (without CPU) again with 24 pin power cable connected and also the two 2x4 EPS cables connected.  Tada.  No luck, same poop.  E1 error popped up after the led spinned a few times.   Tried 4 different USB sticks (including the EVGA USB stick) formatted to FAT32, with only the EVGAE698.bin file in each drive.

Gonna send it back to EVGA..  Thx again for your help

Did you put all the contents of the bios upgrade file on the usb?  You may need more than just the bin file

sry to hear it was no luck.

at least thanks to Khronos_18's Youtube vid we know u fallowed the protocols.

ur going to have EVGA flash it for u?

if yes, and EVGA tells u, plz post what the problem(s) were/was that made it impossible for u to flash. 20 years ago i sent a board back to ASUS. But it was protocol... i couldn't blind-flash due to having removed the Floppy Disk from Boot order. So ASUS didn't have to comment. I believe they replaced the EPROM (BIOS Chip). And it was it so lucky that they were only 45 Minuets from my local. When they told me where to ship it i was like, no way Dude! I could have driven it, but it was Winter too, and so convenient just shipping overnight.

The only thing i didn't do this time was to populate the USB stick with files in addition to  the bios (the bin file).  Do I need to leave only the bin file in the drive?  Or i should unzip the download from EVGA and dump everything into the USB?  Would that make a difference?
As of right now I am leaning toward doing the RMA.  EVGA said I can do the cross shipment option (EVGA sends me a board, I will send mine back after receiving theirs), or I can send mine in and have them flash it and send it back.  The rep told me the 2nd option might not be worthwhile since it is possible that the problem could persist when they try to flash the bios in the shop.
I prefer to send mine in since my board is new. If they send me a board first then it will probably be a refurbished board.   What do you think?

Or being a knucklehead I might go get a 12th gen CPU from BB or Amazon and try to flash it using the method w the CPU.  But then I would not be able to find out if my board has a bad the USB slot (the one that one uses to flash the bios without a cpu).

The .bin file alone is approximately 33MB (33,000KB), so that is all that is needed for BIOS Installation Without CPU and BIOS Installation within BIOS. The "FTWIN" folder and "update.bat" are for Windows Installation. Go ahead and add them, and all others extracted from zip, to USB drive if u want and try again. But it shouldn't make a difference. Again, 33MB (33,000KB) is plenty. But i'd luv to be wrong so try anyway for Installation Without CPU.

I've used "Cross shipping" so many times it's like my middle name after "RMA". It's always the best way IMO. Only thing to worry about it is if, after doing so; would the replacement not work when doing a BIOS Installation Without CPU. RMA/Cross Shipping would the be best choice, even with the gamble that it would be refurbished; and only a perfect option, if they flashed it in advance for u, to a BIOS supporting 13th Gen. So maybe u could inquire if they would.

After the RMA arrives and if u still couldn't flash it, well, IDK. So maybe the best thing to do now is to get a 12th Gen CPU and try it in ur current board; because u would sort of be left with that only option -- if it ever came about that an RMAed board wouldn't BIOS Installation Without CPU too.

Remember that with a 12th Gen., the .bin file for BIOS Installation within BIOS should work from a Flash drive plugged into an IO USB Port (back of PC) and i think the onboard USB port or as the manual calls it, "USB to SPI for BIOS Flash" (Page -13-) is only for BIOS Installation Without CPU.

GL

Edit:

With a 12 Gen... should work from a Flash drive plugged into an IO USB Port (back of PC):

(Source: BIOS for Z690 DARK K|NGP|N (2.08) / CLASSIFIED (2.08) [13900KS support and more])
BIOS Installation within BIOS

  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS
  • From the BIOS, navigate to the EXTRAS tab at the upper left and click on "BIOS Update"
  • Select the .bin file you wish to flash.

Thanks.  I received a reply from EVGA team and they will send a mobo with the latest Bio flashed for the cross shipment RMA.  Now I just have to confirm the RMA request and send them my Ccard info.    I am tempted to buy a 12th gen from amazon but it will arrive next Tuesday (i3-12100) so to give it a try using the other method (no the windows method).

congratz!

update here ASAP.

And EVGA ALL THE WAY!!! that's so cool of them, but I'm not surprised in the least. Like every time I buy a product from them, I make a list of questions and discuss the products and options with one or more of their phone support ppl. Compared to all I've spoken to, from other companies -- and that's a lot -- EVGA's ppl are the best ever at phone support. (That is if ur a polite individual; and not some crazy little CoD kid, that kicks his monitor.)

update here ASAP.

I am a knucklehead after all.   I ordered the i3-12100 from Amazon (to arrive Monday or earlier) to try it out one more time!  In the mean time I will see if I can dig up more ancient USB sticks and attempt the bios flash.   If I still cannot get the flash to work (even w the 12 gen CPU!!!) then I will RMA.  Will keep you posted.

EVGA support is very good.  I bought all my GPUs from them (980ti, 2080ti, 3080ti). Too bad they don't want to manaufacturer video cards anymore. Damn Nvidia :(

Pretty sure the 12th gen CPU will work...I could not update my Classified 690 with the USB on board so I got a 12900K, installed and hooked up everything, booted and pressed DEL key, got into BIOS and updated the BIOS file that was on the board with the 2.05, which was the latest at the time.  Updated okay, then removed the 12900K and exchanged for a 13700K and all is good.
Since then, EVGA released 2.06 and 2.08...2.06 works fine but had problems with updating (in BIOS and Windows both) with 2.08 so just left 2.06 in all three BIOS positions.
Never did try the USB again as no need so long as board will post to get into BIOS or do it from Windows.  The first time I got error code E8 which I think is a memory error (I did not have memory installed) but as I said before, got it all working with the 12th gen CPU so never tried the on board USB port.  Since then I have watched all the videos, read all the posts, etc. etc. and seems to still be questions on which way will work for sure.
